Thank you for the idea, appreciate it! Does this light work for you for Brown
/ Reddish Brown too?

I can see the difference clearly in the pic you showed. The brown parts are
the ones that look almost yellowed.

I think that it is supposed to look like the version on the left...

Sunlight IMO works best, I've sometimes looked at these till my eyes water
under every conceivable type of lightbulb and still made mistakes which came
out later in sunlight. Best is to have them in a pile like you have and then
pick out the ones that do not look as bright, those would be brown (technical
term would be less red, but that would confuse the issue)
If your pile is the same I've marked the ones that stand out clearly.

Best way is to make a color palette. I have one for nearly every color and it
is obvious when you compare them vs the palette. Put the colors that are similar
right next to each other so it is even easier to distinguish them apart from
each other. This picture looks like medium dark flesh almost due to the lighting
and I believe I counted at least 9 that do not look the same color as the rest.

Yes, I have a palet. It helps me for all colors, except Brown and Reddish Brown.
I just don't see it. Even in the palet they look the same to me so I do not
put them besides each other because it confuses me even more. I am avoiding the
whole issue by not putting these colors in my store, but even so I would love
to learn to tell the difference.

With the right lighting (led, or halogene) I learned Blue vs Blue-Violet, Light
Bluish Grey vs Light Grey, etc. But Brown and Reddish Brown....

The light color is much more important than the light source. Many of our light
have light in the 2800-3000 Kelvin range. That light is yellow and makes it difficult
to see the difference. Make sure you use daylight color or a more blueish color
light.

Good idea, I will try that!
Thx

It exists.

I don't expect sellers to sort the parts by these slight variations. As a
buyer, however, I would like to be able to confirm that yes, these parts I just
ordered are all Pearl Gold, despite the fact that I can see two different hues
when I dump the bag of parts on my sorting table.

Ryan Howerter's color guide on Flickr is quite helpful, but it seems to me
that the Bricklink catalog could include a brief comment when there are more
than one acceptable variations of the same color. And by "acceptable," I mean
that these are color variations produced by LEGO under the same color name.

No resource I specifically know of, and I do not think it will be practical to
list color variations specifically in sets. I've had different shades of
Yellow come out of brand new sets, not as in the actual difference between bright
light yellow an yellow for instance, but more as a faded or dirty yellow. It
is especially noticeable on smaller hinges and clips as well as plates and modified
bricks. There was a thread on the forum some years ago where the variations in
dark red was discussed, if memory serves me correctly, and it was then generally
agreed that the parts produced in China at the time came out in a slightly brighter/lighter
shade of dark red than those produced elsewhere, and I think the approach was
taken at time that it remains the official color.

I'm at present sitting on about a thousand different Maersk Blue pieces,
and there is a distinct difference in parts I acquired in 2010/2011 as opposed
to parts acquired after 2012, this being the reason I will probably not list
those at all and rather just part out the Maersk Container Train as a reference
color. The difference is really just plain horrifying. I also have some blue
pieces that goes more the shade of dark azure than anything blue in my collection,
those have been binned as I just assumed the same trouble I've had with dark
pink in the past. I've also had white and light bluish grey parts vary over
time and normally bin those if the difference is far too noticeable. Pearl Gold
parts have so much variation on it, sometimes even from part to part, that I
don't even bother and it will be cumbersome at best to sort through to ensure
all parts sent in a batch are the same hue, heck given our new fanatical approach
to energy saving lighting here, I wont even get a decent enough light bulb to
do that sort of sorting at any time other than daylight, and maybe not even then.

I've just always taken the approach that, since even my newly opened sets
have slight color variations in, to just accept it as part of some LEGO idiosyncrasy
in stead of trying to get part colors to match up 100% in the best light I could
get.

The worst I've seen is with lime pieces - I've had about a thousand different
shades, that are all definitely lime. Individually you can't really see much
of a difference, but put together the difference is shocking.

I've been collecting different Lego colours, 3001 bricks and rare(ish) parts
for a while and now I have a fair collection put away in a draw I'm thinking
of the best way to store them. I'd like to have them on display somewhere
but have limited space for that. If I had my way I'd mount them onto large
baseplates and put them on the wall like pictures, but not sure I'd get away
with that.

Just wondering how other Lego colour / oddity parts collectors store or display
theirs.

Seems like Medium Violet, Dark Blue-Violet
and Medium Azure to me.
Not Light Turquoise.
Photographing it next to known colors might give more syreity.

I think you have got the colours right.....

Use BL's colour guide to help you, as I can often cross match colours within
bulk lots with known colours with sets and the like.

Why not create a small colour palette using standard 2x2 bricks (they have the
most colours), and use the official BL colour guide to determine those colours?

I've done the same using 2x4's as I have approx 92 different colours
as 48 of them are 'test bricks' and the like...

Regards,

Paul

Hello Paul

Thank you for your confirmation and suggestion of a colour chart.
Definitely something I am going to do now.

Hello all.

I'm stumped with 3 colours from a batch of duplo I got yesterday.

The 2 2x2 (same colour) I think are medium violet
The 2x2 and 2x4 (same colour) I think are violet

The single 2x2 I think is light turquoise

I'm asking for help as these colours are rare and I don't want to list
until I'm sure.

Unfortunately I don't have any of these colours in stock or my collection
so I cannot confirm myself.

Thanks in advance
David

Used parts are common, but modern trans-clear bricks are rare.
(Does anyone know why?)

I would have thought panels would be used rather than bricks in modern sets for
clear.

Last use in a set was 1987.

My understanding was that the catalogue wasn’t accurate as the 300[123]old entries
are relatively recent.

TLG realized their colour QA was awful?

The last couple of batches of used bricks I've obtained had a lot of trans
clear bricks of varying sizes in them, all of them except for one or two had
internal cracks.

Perhaps it was a quality decision.

Many parts have two moulds and two Design IDs, one for ABS (solid colours) and
one for PC (transparent colours) (“ABS” or “PC” is sometimes included in the
official name), even when the differences (in the resulting bricks) aren’t obvious.

3001old doesn’t only mean old 3001 bricks, it also means 3001 without support.

I have trans-clear 3001 bricks with cross-supports, and even a recent one with
thin walls (fully modern 3001). They do exist, but they're only used for
internal models like in LegoLand parks.

Yes, a “Generally” or “common [parts]” was missing in my first sentence. The
point I really wanted to make was that the “old” in “3001old” is for “old mould,
without cross supports,” not “old mould, for old bricks that were made decades
ago and that are not made anymore.”

Unless TLG is sitting on a big pile of old trans bricks, they are still using
the old moulds.

Maybe all trans clear 2 x 4 bricks in official sets are of the 3001old variety?
Would certainly match the release dates of those sets. Current trans 3003s are
of the 3003old variety but are listed under 3003 as per BL policy, so any 3001
trans that surfaced now would probably still be of the 3001old variety.

Ryan, my brick with thin walls (fully modern 3001) has a different shade- both

I think that I have not seen the color of the left brick used with a modern mold...

Modern 3001 in trans-clear exists, it just hasn't been sold in sets.

Be careful, most of the trans-clear bricks listed here under 3001 are probably
3001old (thick walls and no cross-supports).

If they were Flat Silver, would they pretty well match the hard plastic flat

familiarity with Pearl Light Gray.

I have given up on this catalog problem. I do not see this getting corrected.

I would love to be wrong about that.

pin it to is Medium Violet, I've attached a picture (top right brick)to try
and show the colour the best I can. I'm aware there are two Medium Violets
out there, a Lilac and Medium Bluish Lilac and wondering if it could be one of
these. The lamp post is Violet for reference. Any help would be appreciated
as it's a head-scratcher.

You are right, these are the two medium violets.

BrickLink makes no distinction between these colors.
One is medium blueish and the other is medium reddish violet.

You are right, these are the two medium violets.

BrickLink makes no distinction between these colors.
One is medium blueish and the other is medium reddish violet.

My suggestion is to post a well-worded suggestion and let members vote. I know
suggestions seem to go unheeded, but this may speed up the process.

Totally agree. If we can treat all of the TLG Warm Gold variants as one color,
then we should be able to treat all the TLG Silver variants as one color (excluding
TLG Cool Silver, of course).

At this point, even if we keep Cool Silver in Pearl Light Gray then we will significantly
reduce the confusion.

This is such an issue with Pearl Light Grey and Flat Silver in Bionicle parts,
as most of the elements can come in both colours. I list a lot of Bionicle parts
and keep a sample of several of the parts from new (and known) sources to compare.
I find the Flat Silver tends to be duller compared to Pearl Light.

If you are looking for a strategy, this is what I do with those Bionicle pieces.
I too have the same problem and for a while just didn't list them. Get your
magnifying glass out and get the part number. If the part only is in one of the
two colors, I list it as the color in the catalog. Once you do that, you may
very well have a part that only comes in Flat Silver only but sure looks like
the pile of Pearl Light Gray. But I go with the catalog.
Then you can compare the other parts with the same number to see if there is
a variation in color. In some pieces it is obvious. If I can't determine
which color it is I list it as one color and state that it might be the other
color. Not the best method, but after Googling the two colors shows that there's
a great variation of those colors year from year.

I would not call myself an expert, but I did try to figure out what is going
on with these.

I did not have time to pursue this further. I did check ALL the part lists in

find and make a list of the inconsistencies in the Bricklink inventories.

If someone wants to clean up the inventories, send me a message

My feeling is that Pearl Light Gray kinda looks like it has a clear coat on it
where I can see slightly into the surface of the piece.

PLG has a swirling pattern that is fairly easy to identify on plastic parts but
I don't know about the "rubbery" parts.

Can you come over this evening?

The one I'm puzzling on is two colors. I can't get it to show in a picture
since the colors are so bright. And neither of the colors is medium lime.

Maybe. It could also be another brand. These parts never have the LEGO logo
on them (unless it's hidden up inside?) because there's not really any
place to put it that won't negatively affect the fit or aesthetics The
inner and outer sides of both the stud and the inset at the bottom are connection
surfaces, so those are out. The top of the stud is too thin to really fit the
logo on. The main barrel is the main visual surface, so that would be like having
the logo stamped into the side of a brick.

On LEGO 1x1 round bricks, there is always a pip on the side where the mold gate
is located. On most examples I can find, that pip is about 1/16", fairly round,
and located about 1/3 of the way from the top of the barrel (exclude the stud
and inset base for this). Chinese LEGO has a larger pip that's a bit longer
in the vertical (as seen from the S10 painter, and TLBM1 Dick Grayson accessories).
I can't find any offhand, but I always make sure to hide the pips whenever
possible when building, so I'm pretty sure I've seen a few where the
gate is 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the barrel. They have multiple factories
across Europe, so I suspect this variant comes from one of those, but if they
don't run that mold as often it won't be as common as the standard version.

The other thing that you can look for is if the inside of the base and the stud
are perfectly round, because they shouldn't be (not on modern parts, at least).
At four equidistant points around the inside of these two places, there should
be a slight bulge or flat spot that disrupts what is otherwise a perfectly round
hole. This is where the inside surfaces touch when they're attached to another
part. The round section is a slightly wider diameter that would have zero clutch,
but if you tilt the part when removing it from a stud this allows the part to
flex a bit so it won't crack open (this is especially important on trans
parts because the old ones were made of acrylic and would crack open the base
as a result of this, looking like someone had gone after it with a hole punch).
For trans parts this poses a bigger problem if you insert a trans bar into a
trans stud, because the material would have so much clutch that it would be nearly
impossible to remove the part, and could result in the bar snapping off in the
attempt. It's believed that they changed the material used for just lightsaber
blades to prevent this polycarbonate bonding, but if this change was introduced
around the same time it could help by limiting the clutch. Now, these bulges
are a bit faint, and can be hard to spot, so if you don't see them right
away try under different lighting, especially if you can limit it from a single
source (this creates stronger shadows), and don't forget to slowly rotate
the part a bit so the shading moves around the inside of the holes.

Metallic colors are painted, so they can be (and are) replicated. All you have
to do is find a way to match the look of the paint. Pearl and flat colors are
molded, and the only way to reproduce those is to mold them like that.

That said, there could be Q elements. LEGO Master Model Builders and LEGO Certified
Professionals can order any shape in any color if they feel like it, and it'll
be made. There are a couple of sellers who have this part listed in flat silver,
so it _might_ exist. However, Brickset inventories show no such thing (then
again, I can't find any listings for metallic silver ones either, and those
clearly exist). If it exists as an official part, their inventories should pick
it up because they mine the info directly from the LEGO servers, and avoid human
error. The only downside to their system is that they're only set up to
display the latest version of any set inventory. If changes are made, their
inventories are automatically updated to reflect that. That means if flat silver
1x1 round bricks _did_ get released in a set, but then got replaced with a different
color of the same part, Brickset would lose that info as soon as they pull the
updated inventory down. Here, you can save variations to set inventories as
you run across them, but people have to identify the part and color, and they
don't always get it right.

The part is a round brick 1x1 (3062b), and it appears to be flat silver. I've

color. It's definitely not metallic silver, at least compared to other metallic
silver parts in my new inventory.

My issue is that this does not appear to be a known color for this part. The
part certainly appears to be actual Lego, so I don't think that's the
issue. I just don't want to add something to my inventory incorrectly.

Opinions? I'm tempted to just chuck those ones in the donation box rather
than mess with it, since it's only a couple of pieces. But I'm intrigued
as well.

Thanks!

they change colors in the molding machine, I just never saw two with that much

The second is a slope I found and I can't really explain the speckle. It
is a LEGO part, seems to be mostly Light Bluish Gray. When I looked at it through
a loop, as you can see here, it has small shafts of black. I would expect round

Does anyone know how the slope got speckled?
Anyone interested in owning them?

Thanks for all of your input. I will double check that is or isn't LEGO.

Regarding the slope, I've seen that kind of color and speckling in Mega Bloks
military sets.

Is it a 1x1 slope? Top corners look sharper/more angular than normal - you sure
its not a clone?

I agree with this. Even the prototype cheese slopes I've seen (which do have
sharp top corners) are shaped a little differently.

As for the bracket colors, it seems to happen a lot with this part. Either it's
a poorly-colored Light Bluish Gray, or it's Dark Bluish Gray that didn't
get enough colorant. Hard to say for sure.

What does it look like next to other parts that you know are Orange?

Yeah, I suppose you're correct. I guess I can stick it into inventory under
"unusual colour". Thanks for giving it a go.

they change colors in the molding machine, I just never saw two with that much

The second is a slope I found and I can't really explain the speckle. It
is a LEGO part, seems to be mostly Light Bluish Gray. When I looked at it through
a loop, as you can see here, it has small shafts of black. I would expect round
beads, but not shafts.

Does anyone know how the slope got speckled?
Anyone interested in owning them?

Is it a 1x1 slope? Top corners look sharper/more angular than normal - you sure
its not a clone?

I had always believed 100% the change was made to save money. That was something
I respected. But now I read this for the first time https://news.lugnet.com/lego/?n=1791

Whoa, was it really that dumb? That's one of the most pathetic things I read
in a long time and I don't even know where to start.. 1. they don't
even save any money on the change?? 2. I don't even believe that since to
me as an artist the pigments actually do look alot cheaper 3. how can you give
such a dramatic change so little thought 4. what does it even mean when someone
says "next time I will listen to you as well as a group of kids before I make
my decision" 4. how can you apologise so pathetically and give absolutely
nothing and not even make the smallest bsh*t gesture of saying you will pay more
attention next time and literally write there will likely be more "mistakes"
5. ...
It would really have been better if they had not written anything at all. IMO
They don't deserve to have apologised.. Glad I never read it at the time

The left oil can is of a colour that is darker than either old dark grey or dark

Apologies if the colours don't come through very well; I took the photo in
bright outdoor light, with the Texas sun at just after high noon. If that isn't
natural light, then anyone's guess on that definition. Background is a sheet

The photo makes it look like regular Orange, but I am sure you checked that.
So if it isn't regular Orange, that leaves Earth Orange and Medium Orange.
Earth Orange is the darker of the two, so I would assume it is that one:

However, I would check against Medium Orange, also, just to be sure:

That's correct. In 2006 LEGO changed Light Gray to Light Bluish Gray, Dark
Gray to Dark Bluish Gray and Brown to Reddish Brown. So all sets from after 2006/2007
have these 3 new colors and all before have the old colors. So the old colors
become more and more rare - especially in new conditions.

Is Neon Green the answer to this color? The droid torso I sold is on wanted
lists in this color. The only weird thing about this color and Neon Orange,
is that their is no information as to where these colors originated, what sets
they are in, or the time they were released.
Rainey

Neon Green and Neon Orange were ONLY ever used in watch parts. Watch links, round
watch faces... very neon and glowy looking

Ryan,

According to your color chart (http://ryanhowerter.net/colors.html) it looks
like it could just be a production difference, as there were 3 shades of lime
14 years ago.

Medium Lime (1998-2005), Color ID : 115 (Lego), 76 (BL)
Light Lime (1998-2007), Color ID : 120 (Lego), 35 (BL)
Lime (1998-present), Color ID : 119 (Lego) , 34 (BL)

Just to be clear: you opened 4 brand new sets which were the same 14-year-old
set. Three of these sets had the parts in one shade of green, presumably lime,
and the 4th set had all those same parts in a different (lighter) shade of green?

If the shade can be definitely identified, then feel free to add those parts
as alternates to the lime parts.

But I don't know if it has a name. I had noticed neon green, but have nothing
to compare to it.

Also, these parts are what we considered 'Lime' back in 2004.
