They have different part numbers.

BL has ignored stuff like this before because it’s not worth the hassle.
But if you want to keep item numbers just add them as alternates.
|
On closer inspection it is more than that. We don't have pictures of them
in box, but these listings are actually for Gear Sets. Those numbers are not
part numbers. They are product IDs.

| It happens when a part isn't split properly. The new variant enters the
catalog and the old one is not marked undetermined and the partner specific piece
isn't created. Often you can figure out what happened specifically to a
set by looking at when it was inventoried and when the variant was added to the
catalog and when the other got named undetermined.

Comments from Submitter:
The set this minifig comes from seems to have had 2 releases, one with Metallic Copper axes and dwarf helmet (on this minifig) and the other with reddish brown axes and helmet. The axes are catalogued in the Alternate Items section but the helmet isn't.
I have been rebuilding some of my older sets and I only have a reddish brown helmet which could only come from this set, and the axes being in 2 different colour seems to confirm this theory.
|
A new minifigure with the alternate helmet would need to be added to the catalog
to take care of this since minifigure inventories cannot have alternates.

nice to have a filter that you can choose the discounts you want to see instead
of just all sales. Like if a shop has different sale percentages at 10, 25, 30,
50 and 75 percent off you could filter for everything above 50%.
|
I think if we had it you would come to see it was useless. If you were choosing
between Walmart, Target, or TRU, it would be useful, but different shops on Bricklink
routinely list things 3-4 times as much as other stores and those tend to be
the ones running sales. You can’t get much of an idea where you will get the
lowest prices by sorting by sale %.

| I've searched for this issue and I'm not sure what to do.
I placed an order over two months ago and according to the seller the shipment
got lost by the shipping company shortly after. The seller has been nothing but
professional through the whole thing and I have received a full refund of my
order a couple of weeks ago. Both the seller and I gave each other positive reviews.
But the order is still sitting as "Shipped" and now I'm not sure
what to do. Should I just change it to "Completed" even though the parts
never arrived? I have no option to cancel the order at this stage, that seems
to be the prerogative of the seller, however only if done before shipping if
I understand correctly. There seems to be an option to cancel through the "Problem
Order" page, but that doesn't quite sit right with me either as it looks
like it would file a NSS alert, which is not really the case. I believe the seller
did what they could and I don't want to give them any more trouble over this.
Any advice?
|
You don't need to worry or do anything about it. If the seller cancels the
order, they get their fees back, but depending not he size of the order that
might not feel worth their time. In six months they order will disappear.

I am looking at the spaceship in this set and obviously it is connected to the
box that Buzz came in on Toy Story 1 and 2, but it is a spaceship here and much
larger than his box. I see other toys on Google that are also based on what
the box would look like as a spaceship, but I am not finding where Buzz was ever
depicted in a ship like that. I didn't watch Star Command, but it looks
like they fly around in big ship with the cockpit toward the back. Does someone
who watched the show know if they ever used smaller maybe fighter craft that
looked like this or is this just Lego's imagining of what the box would be?
What I am trying to establish in my mind is if this is just a secondary imagination
Toy Story set or whether it is a "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" set.
All of the other sets that came out that year depict events in one of the movies.

When you download orders on Bricklink it calls the items in the order "details",

out from use, what were they used for that stretched them out and kept them circular?
I don't deal in used belts. I sell round ones that were in a sleeve or
bag and football shaped ones that were on a belt holder. I would expect a band
that was permanently misshapen by use to be something other than round.

I feel pretty confident that those were not manufactured the same size. Do you
have a kitchen scale that measures decimals of grams? You can stretch the diameter
of a rubber belt some, but you can't stretch the weight and those larger
ones don't look thinner.
Rubber belts were handled poorly for many years. Randy and I have cleared a
lot of it up, but work remains. Bricklink only has PCC for the smallest white
belt and almost every white belt is . x37, x89, and x90 are all in inventories
in white and probably a lot of that is incorrect. But we can see from service
pack 9961-1 that all 4 probably exist (I say probably because we can see there
are 4 sizes, but maybe they aren't actually the same part as they've
been identified as, which are usually red, blue, and yellow.)
I would say one of your sellers got ahold of one of the mysterious ones and assumed
they were x71 because they were white.

I think in that picture there are red glints that are artifacts from photography.
I am pretty sure that the eyebrows are referring to the shape of the eyes that
seem to have eyebrows mushed into them. They DO give the effect of angry eyebrows
and it was probably meant that way, I guess, but the idea of a skeleton having
eyebrows is actually pretty strange.

Yes, this. I generally don't check in advance, but I am often disappointed
when one comes assembled. I have asked sellers sometimes just to get an idea
what they are thinking. One told me once that he agreed with me, but his supplier
always assembled them. Having a supplier is foreign to me.
I had an order last year that I went to see things to add to and I picked up
a for a small part or two for my parts collection. It came entirely
assembled. I asked the seller how that was new and he said that set was mainly
a minifig so he assembles them. Leaving aside that this is beyond the scope
of the minifig rule, I really just don't get it. Unless you built it for
yourself and then decided to sell it later. It comes in a blind pack. You open
and identify and I don't see why you would then assemble it. Is it just
a little chance to play with some LEGO?
I often add comments for specificity, but probably usually don't. If I don't
say anything in my store it is from a new set never assembled, but since the
rule says what it says I have sometimes build a minifig and taken its picture
and sold it as new. I don't think standing them in a tent and taking a picture
is play. But even so, I would like the rule to say that only minifigs that come
from the factory assembled can be sold as new.

| How many mistakes in an order do you all tolerate before contacting a seller?
For egregious cases the decision is easy, but I just received yet another order
leaving me with a frustrating decision to make. I understand quantity errors,
but what gets to me are the missing lots that occur in roughly 50% of all orders
that have missing lots that bother me.
In this case, I probably will not say anything, because only 2 of 60 lots are
missing, they are not minifigures, and because I can get them from Lego.com for
$4 total. However, the decision is still annoying because one of the lots is
for right wedges to match left wedges that did get included.
Notes:
-Yes, I have tried ordering fewer lots, but it seems you have to keep it under
20 lots in order to prevent most seller mistakes. Those smaller orders are usually
not cost effective for me after factoring in shipping costs.
-If you receive an order containing a printout with a hand-written check mark
next to each lot, consider favoriting that seller. Those sellers are rare and
almost never make mistakes.
|
I was a seller for many years and if you feel like not telling them because you
are nice, it is a nice sentiment, but it may not actually be nice. A seller
who makes a mistake with your order now has incorrect inventory and may not notice
it before that in turn causes ANOTHER order error. It can be difficult to figure
out where things went wrong. So a good expression of niceness is to start you
message to them nicely, but send the message.

+1 the weight is used to figure out shipping costs not to count. If you need
to count using weight then buy a counting scale then you just need to count several
tell the scale how many and then dump in the rest until you hit the right count.
The weight in bricklink wouldn’t work even for the same part for multiple reasons
such as color, variations, year produced, plastic composition, etc so odds are
whatever one you have in stock is a different weight then the one on bricklink
as bricklink just records the heaviest version found

I am not very familiar with Studio. If I used it, it would be as a game, but
I guess it is intended to design something to build and they don't want someone
to design something and not be able to get the pieces. If so, restricting it
to parts that were in sets is a pretty good rule. You cannot reliably find Dark
Green 3022 and when one is for sale it will be an expensive 3022.

In 2003 you didn't have to have a sealed set. They were trying to get inventories
established and did a lot from used sets and even pictures of sets. There wasn't
a field to fill out on your source back then, so they all say "Unknown".
There is only one change request in the forum for and it didn't
concern frosted bricks. The inventory may have shown frosted bricks before the

Minifigs don't have colors assigned.

Because there are very few instances where it would make any sense. Monochromes
and the yellow space man are the only minifigs that all the pieces are the same
color.

True, but aside from the head they are the same thing in different colours.
|
So a few dozen minifigs could be arranged that way out of 16,000. All the others
would have to be adjusted to N/A. I don't see the purpose.

After the merges, you just do a search for identical lots and then go look at
them. If you want to lump them together, do it. If you want to keep them separate,
describe them. I agree with you about their decision, but keeping the inventory
straight shouldn't be very hard.

have always followed the rules despite wanting and being denied a second account
for legitimate reasons (separate business from personal) and yet there are clearly
members here using second accounts to strengthen the voice of their own opinion
in the forum?
How is it possible that so many replies against the variant merge are from people
with barely any feedback yet they still appear to have the highest/most complex
level of understanding when it comes to variants?
Yes perhaps one or two of these never buy or sell and only use Bricklink as a
database reference in which case are they the best voices to be listening to
anyway given they don’t actually contribute to the core element of the site which
is to buy and sell Lego!
But let’s be honest having an opinion is one thing but using a second account
to voice that same opinion again is unhelpful spamming and so I hope admins will
investigate and merge these accounts!
Ultimately as far as peoples opinions go in general I understand the arguments
on both sides and to a degree sympathies but generally a lot of these arguments
seem to be along the lines that the merge is a bad idea because people will no
longer be able to easily distinguish the correct variant? Yet this appears to
be the exact intention, since Bricklink has already openly stated that they do
not particularly want members of its community (New or Old) being overly bogged
down and concerned with these variants. They essentially want them dismissed/forgotten
about! (Pretty much their own words)
With this in mind it really isn’t in Bricklinks best interest to put in place
any specific solution that only further prevents them breaking away from what
they are trying to break away from? Therefore in the end it can only be for individual
members who care about this stuff to either use the comments field or ask the
question!
The way I see it, this change is probably going to hinder maybe 1% of the community
whilst making things smoother and more efficient for 99% of the community. It’s
a no brainer from Bricklinks perspective!

While that isn't difficult for new figures, for used figures it might be
a problem. A figure can't wear both hair and helmet so it is easy to get

complete used figures not allowed to be sold because they are missing alternative
headgear.

So just use the regular listing.

more people who prefer to have the helmet over the hair. A good compromise would
be to have an in-set variant that lists this figure with the helmet for people
who want to buy the helmeted figure.
|
I am sympathetic to this, but it would actually be a pretty big headache with
how the catalog works. The simplest thing to do would be to add alternate versions
of minifigs and not attach them to inventories, but I think that might be little
help. Sellers might be totally unaware of an actually orphaned minifig.
Technic and Belville inventories have advanced minifigs in inventories as counterparts.
They are minifigs with parts added, but not parts taken away. I think there
may have been a few Iron Man figures done that way a few years ago too. But
when you take the hair away, it doesn't meet that definition anymore. And
it probably would still be the same problem. When a seller parts out a set,
it doesn't offer them the counterparts, so they still might be unaware that
it exists.
Now and then it STILL takes a judgment call, but the advantage of what has been
the rule is that it is consistent. If you just go by what the instructions first
say, you don't have different submitters and different admins doing different
things. If you put it in the hands of personal judgment, we would have a lot
more threads like this.
An alternate suggestion that I would like BETTER, would be to add advanced minifigs
whenever the instructions show the minifig built both ways with the arrow between
them showing an alternate build. The advanced minifig would have the hair AND
the helmet.

Yes. They just need to do the work.
Go look at Brickset. Every single alternate number in our catalog is actually
a different piece. And Brickset has the opposite problem. It doesn't seem
to know that a lot of them are pretty much identical.
We should have every piece just like Brickset does, but a database architecture
that connects them as the user sees fit. It would allow Bricklink to remain
a preeminent source of LEGO information and allow the user to dumb it down if
they want. I haven't look really closely at the details here. I saw enough
to start thinking I may be done working on the Bricklink catalog. I have wasted
a LOT of my time getting them information that they don't want and in the
future I'll never know if I am wasting my time. They accept my work now,
but might throw it away later.

b) no
c) not sure yet
Keep in mind that it won't be visible anymore in the old set inventories
which variant has been used.
Thanks Mauro

I don't know.
I've never pulled the trigger so far and maybe I won't again, but it
is another moment where I'm thinking about just walking away.

| Can the solution to this issue really not wait for Bricklink to develop a proper
umbrella system in the catalog?
Will all of my work be totally erased or will it still be recorded somewhere?

| I spent thousands of dollars tracking down 32064c for you. You are welcome.

| Hello everyone,
As a platform, we have decided to take a hard look at some of the mold variants
that we are currently asking you to recognize. For sellers, more variants means
extra sorting and extra work while pulling orders, plus the issues that arise
from variant misunderstandings.
For buyers, excess variants mean that it's harder to assemble a wanted list,
find stores, and ultimately obtain the parts you are looking for.
I have put together a quick Help page to outline these proposed changes:
https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2625
Notice the date on this is coming up quickly (Feb 1), so I'm not giving a
lot of time for discussion. I'm aiming for about 1 week of discussion and
then we'll give sellers 2 weeks to adjust the descriptions on affected items
if they wish to retain the distinctions.
I plan to construct a full FAQ page with answers to all your questions. This
will serve to inform users about what was done here in February 2024, and also
help point the catalog in the right direction in the future.
To get started, I'll list a few here:
1. This sounds like you're dumbing down the BrickLink catalog to make
it easier for new users. Is that what is going on?
Not really. There are many, many other variants we expect people to sort and
care about. These ones don't really seem to matter much, and some of them
(e.g., the minifigure heads) actually cause problems for the catalog that cannot
be corrected otherwise.
2. What if I really care about a certain variant that is going away? Can I
still buy and sell that variant?
Absolutely! You can add notes to your listings to make them as "determined"
as you wish. Buyers can still search within notes for extra details, or they
can simply observe them as they browse listings.
3. How do I know which exact variants will be merged? I only see one example
in each category.
Please ask in this thread and I can be very specific. Usually we are talking
about a handful of parts and the printed versions.
4. Has a merge like this ever been done before?
Yes, there was a precedent - the Headlight Brick with Slot:
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1016584
It was marked for deletion a few years ago and was finally merged last August.
5. Are these the only parts up for consideration, or are there other variants
that will be merged as well?
This is all for now. Based on how well this goes, we may elect to remove other
entries later. However, we will keep all functional variants and important cosmetic
variants.

Thanks.

Dark Gray and Dark Bluish Gray are not very difficult when you have familiarized
yourself with them. Light Gray and Light Bluish Gray can defy a good eye without
a reference. Get yourself a little bag with a piece from each in it and keep
it handy.
