Technically, it’s a brown.
The HSL equivalent of #BBB29E is (rounded) H=41, S=18, L=68. Enter these values
here: https://www.w3schools.com/colors/colors_hsl.asp
You can play with the Saturation and Lightness fields to be more convinced.
(The Hue value mostly corresponds to what we call tint or colour in everyday
language. Low Saturation would be “faded,” high “bright” or “vivid.” And Lightness,
well, it’s about black and white, with the “full” colour in the middle.)
But then it also may be a cultural thing / translation problem. Colour names
are tricky and translations are never exact.
For instance, in French, common brown is called marron, from the fruit
of the horse chestnut tree¹. It’s now the generic term for every hue of brown.
The English word that etymologically correspond to it is “maroon.” But, in English,
that’s a particular colour that’s actually a dark red (#80000) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maroon
.
The other way around, in French we have brun, which clearly is etymologically
linked to brown. It can also be a generic term for brown colours (more literary
/ older) but it’s more particularly used for dark brown hair and fur (brown bear
= ours brun, never ours marron).
And that’s with languages, English and French, that are close together.
Even when you know all these false friends, your brain still sees the etymological
link, the “they sound the same” link.
––
¹ For the “real” chestnut fruit (châtaigne), we have the colour châtain,
which is used exclusively for hair and it’s not the same colour as English chestnut.
There’s colour patches here https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/chestnut and https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/châtain

OK, I admit, that the "Old Trans-Black" parts are kind of "brownish"
when compared with new Transparent Black, and if it is the official LEGO name,
it makes sense to name it that way.
But I still think according to RGB values also that the Transparent Brown parts
are in a way darker and far away from simple Brown Color.

Yes, LEGO calls it Transparent Brown, and always have.

It does have a brownish teint. It’s “warm.”
If you look at the RGB values ( http://www.ryanhowerter.net/colors.php ), it’s
BBB29E (red 187, green 178, blue 158). It’s far from a pure grey (where R=G=B

Apparently, if you put the new Trans-Black next to it, this brownish teint is
even more obvious.

In Catalog, randyf writes:
| Dear BrickLink members,
In May of this year, the LEGO Group plans to release a new color, and this has
implications for the BrickLink catalog and marketplace. The new color being introduced
is 375 Transparent Black, and we believe it will eventually replace LEGO color
111 Transparent Brown.
As most of you know, the greater fan community has for many years referred to
LEGO color 111 Transparent Brown as "Trans-Black". Up until now, this
name has served us well because there was no official LEGO color known as Transparent
Black. Now that the LEGO Group is introducing a color officially known as Transparent
Black, it will cause alignment problems to have the same name being used for
two different colors.
We anticipate that the introduction of this color will cause some disruptions
over the short term, but we have created a plan of action to minimize those disruptions.
The first thing we will do is change the name of the current Trans-Black color
to "Trans-Brown (Old Trans-Black)". This change is scheduled to
take place at the beginning of April. This will ensure that the name change will
be very noticeable within the catalog, set inventories, BrickLink stores, order
summaries, etc., so that the majority of BrickLink users can adjust to the change.
Next, the new color will be added to the catalog as "Trans-Black (2023)"
to make it very obvious that this is a new color and should not be used for older
set inventories and older parts being listed for sale. This addition is expected
to happen at the beginning of May when set 75346 is released and inventoried:
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1398124
After a 6-month transition, we will remove the text in parentheses from both
color names. The older color will then be "Trans-Brown", and the
newer color will be "Trans-Black". This will complete the transition.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The question arises, why have we decided to go the route outlined above rather
than leaving "Trans-Black" aligned to LEGO color 111 Transparent Brown
and creating a new color name for the new LEGO color 375 Transparent Black? There
are several reasons.
First, we want to make sure that we do not create long-term confusion between
these colors, since we believe the new LEGO color 375 Transparent Black will
become the standard color and LEGO color 111 Transparent Brown will become just
another part of the history of the brick system we all know and love. As time
goes by, the older color will not be seen as often and the newer color will be
everywhere. And after what we hope is a relatively short period of time, BrickLink
users will adjust naturally to the change.
Second, coming up with a name for a new color is not an easy task. Although it
looks darker than the current LEGO color 111 Transparent Brown, it doesn't
look much different from what most people would say is some type of "transparent
blackish gray" color. Typically, new color names grow longer over time to
help distinguish from existing colors, so we could end up with something like
"Trans-Very Dark Bluish Gray".
Longer names are something we have come to accept in a catalog that covers the
entire history of LEGO colors, but it helps lower the entry barrier to BrickLink
when we can use simpler names at least for the most common colors. Using the
relatively short names "Trans-Brown" and "Trans-Black" are ideal
instead of retaining "Trans-Black" for the earlier color and creating
a longer name for the new color.
Finally, aligning the names of the two colors with the official LEGO color names
helps us future-proof the BrickLink catalog. By aligning these color names now,
we make sure that any other colors the LEGO Group may introduce within this range
in the future would not cause any further issues.
Thank you for your patience as we make this transition.
The BrickLink Catalog Administrative Team

Interesting discussion. I was not aware of the fox variant until recently, so
looks like my I need to add fox to my collection.
If the criteria is looking for variants produced in significant numbers, shouldn’t
chrome sw0158 have a b variant? Either the North American or European version?

For the completionists it just makes collecting more challenging (& expensive)
& the worry will be it’ll put people off or they’ll give up altogether, as the
barrier to collect minifigs is already high with over 1300+ in the catalog.
For those wondering, I did own Fox, but sold it as it never had an sw number

The catalog is a fluid entity, and it ebbs and flows in many ways all of the
time. Some things get added (sw0202b), some get deleted, and some just get changed
(like five Star Wars "figures" that were just decommissioned [ https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2571
]).
It was decided by the current catalog administration team as a whole that sw0202b
should get its own entry because it was made and distributed in sets in significant
quantities.
The Star Wars figure mentioned is no different than this Technic figure
that was printed incorrectly and distributed in sets in significant quantities.
That was just added to the catalog in December of last year.
As catalog administrators, we cannot play favorites and we try to apply guidelines
and decisions as consistently as possible.

Ok—I’ll say hi here
I am putting together info on sw0102–again as the admins have asked of me since
it was years ago when the full triangle of this minifigure helmet was misprinted
into many sets but never got it’s separate variant entry. It was I and a couple
others that tried to get this accomplished but without success. At present Sw0202
torso misprint was accepted really quick by the admins. Why? Just split the
sw0102 to add the variant correctly as sw0102a and sw0102b.
|
None of the current administrators were around for the old discussions or yet
understand the issue fully for sw0102. That is why we need the information.
We received all of the necessary information promptly when dealing with sw0202b,
and we were able to make a decision based on our collective prior experience
as an admin team dealing with similar scenarios (such as the Technic figure).
Once we feel like we have enough information, a decision will be made and acted
upon.
Cheers,
Randy
|
Any chance you could tell us what this "necessary information" that you
received on sw0202b was? I'd just be interested in knowing the backstory
on this figure.
Also what is the criteria that the decision is made on? What determines whether
you will add it to the catalog or not?
Thanks,
Pete

A completionist is by definition someone who gives away their power to someone
else. I understand the draw to have an objective standard to compare your collection
to, but you might want to adopt a variant policy. sw0202b DOES indeed have a
legitimate Bricklink listing now, but it is a B. You could ignore him because
you already have a sw0202 and having every number is something without having
to have every sub-letter of every number.

I'm not a star wars minifigure collector, but if I was, I would not base
the completeness of my collection based on whether bricklink decides to give
the item number a "sw" or not. If you're basing it on a catalog,
then what catalog are you basing it on? Brickowl doesn't have separate variation
for this minifig; so by their criteria then your collection is fine.
I feel like you're making something out of nothing.

That could come down to how you perceive these? Do you think they should be 2
entries for sw0202? If so then your completionist nature should collect both.
If you don't agree with our decision then just collect the cheapest and consider
your commander fox collection complete.
As Kevin (goldknight) mentions I have asked for information about sw0102 again.
One question I asked him was what other similar SW print variations or errors
are sitting in the wings also waiting to see what happens with the above?

A noticeable one I get asked sometimes to check:

Thanks.
If it's a complete error like that then we still wouldn't consider it.

Can you point us to the discussions you mentioned the community are having about

It is up to collectors to decide whether their collections are complete if they
own a sw0202 or if they need to have both sw0202a and sw0202b. They are a variant,
you can decide if you want to own all variants or not. They existed before they
were catalogued at BL, so being added to the catalogue has not changed whether
they exist or not.
If not owning a rare variant of a figure means someone is put off collecting
SW minifigures completely, then that is up to them. What is more important, enjoying
collecting them and your own collection, or having everything as it is catalogued
at bricklink?

I can find one), or just sit with the knowledge of my collection never being
complete & quitting altogether?
|
That could come down to how you perceive these? Do you think they should be 2
entries for sw0202? If so then your completionist nature should collect both.
If you don't agree with our decision then just collect the cheapest and consider
your commander fox collection complete.
As Kevin (goldknight) mentions I have asked for information about sw0102 again.
One question I asked him was what other similar SW print variations or errors
are sitting in the wings also waiting to see what happens with the above?
Can you point us to the discussions you mentioned the community are having about
this? I'd be interested to see the opinions and see what other variant minifigs
are being discussed.
Thanks,
Paul.

| I really hope they don’t add any more, the fanbase would implode!
I’m looking at my own ‘variant’ list right now which consists of at least 20
other minifigs that are commonly known or found in mass produced sets in significant
numbers, including the chrome gold c-3po EU/NA version! Can you imagine if that
was added as sw0158a/b, collectors would not be happy.

For the completionists it just makes collecting more challenging (& expensive)

barrier to collect minifigs is already high with over 1300+ in the catalog.

| The reason I question if the rules have changed is because I’ve tried on many
occasions over recent years to add variations of minifigs to the catalog (including
Fox) which were not approved. Although I did manage to get the smooth haired
Leia from the X-wing set included, but usually requests such as, Qi’Ra with Yoda
back always got rejected in the past.

I have that set, and checked the inventory against the bricklink list. So it
is defintely possible that the Bricklink inventory is correct. Unfortunately
I can't be sure that the 3839a actually come from that set, they could have
landed in there from any of my childhood sets. But the timeline would work, Lego
did use the 3839a at the time they made that set. Though that doesn't really
answer your question I suppose, sorry!

My best advice for someone learning how to add new parts is to find a very similar
part already in the catalog. Look at the number conventions, the naming conventions,
the category, etc.
Start your new item with this info and edit it to match your new part.
In your case, I see this part already in the catalog:
* | | 62713 Minifigure, Utensil Peruvian Temple Idol (Golden Idol) Type 1 - Mold Position Number on Back, without Reinforced Inside Parts: Minifigure, Utensil |
You'll need to check for a mold number on your 6328363 to see if it is the
same.
And:
Here is a list of torsos with similar features to 6405067
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?pg=1&q=torso+pockets+belt&catLike=W&sortBy=N&sortAsc=A&v=1
The answers are all here:

To find that do a Catalog search for 3068bpb*

numbers that were used. The numbers may also have been used already but are still
Pending Approval.
