Inventory Comparison Tool

Quick Navigation: New Inventory Submissions | Color table

With the Inventory Comparison Tool you can compare a Bricklink Inventory with LEGO data or compare two Bricklink Inventories.

To access the Inventory Comparison Tool, click on "Market" in the top navigation menu, then "Inventories" and then select "Compare Set Inventories".
To access the new release you will have to change v3 to r3 in the url.

Alternatively, you may use this link: Inventory Comparison Tool

We do not currently have complete data for all items, like
  1. Sets older than 1995 / Retired parts.
  2. Foil Packs (Paper Bags) that come with Magazines.
  3. Specials like LEGO Brand Store / Inside Tour items and Promotional items from Stores / Events.
Settings

There are several important settings that must be adjusted properly to use the Inventory Comparison Tool in an effective way. The settings in the above image are recommended when comparing BrickLink and LEGO data during the inventory approval process.

Additional info:
- If a set has minifigures without an inventory (like DUPLO minifigures) 'Always break Minifigures' has to be disabled to be able to see them.
- The quantity of minifigure parts doesn't match at the moment when the set has more than 1 of the same minifigure or minifigures as Counterpart / Alternate Item.
- The Alternate Items are shown as Counterparts.
How to start:
You will see two columns: 'Inventory A' and 'Inventory B'.

You can compare two BrickLink inventories or Compare a BrickLink inventory with LEGO data, by changing 'Data source'.
The 'Set ID' for BrickLink has to include the suffix (LEGO data is without).

Click "Compare" and the Inventory Comparison Tool will show you data of both inventories (A and B).
Basic Info:
Image
If BrickLink doesn't have an image in the catalog, you are allowed to upload the image from LEGO data.
BrickLink might prefer own images though. For more info check Image Preferences

Item No / Design ID
BrickLink's Item No stands for LEGO's Design ID.
These numbers can be different when
  1. The Design ID is not equal to the moldnumber, for BrickLink uses moldnumbers.
  2. It's a decorated item, part assembly or dual molded item.
  3. A new design was produced and added to the BrickLink Catalog as Alternate Item No.
  4. A new design was produced but not found in sets yet.

PCC / Element ID
To be able to compare data and identify items, we use PCC's. PCC stands for Part and Color Combination and is BrickLink's name for the LEGO Element ID.
For more info about PCC's check Part Color Combination Code.

Color
BrickLink Color Names differ from LEGO Color Names. If you don't know which BrickLink Color matches the LEGO color, check the Color table below. Don't forget to check the color of the actual part though. For more info about multicolored parts, cloth parts, part assemblies, sheets etc, check Color Assignment

At the bottom of the page the tool shows the Extra Parts, Counterparts and Minifigures (if this setting is disabled).
Differences in existing inventories:
Differences are always shown on top of the list.
- Sticker Sheets don't show in LEGO data, so will always appear as a difference.
- Differences in quantity of minifigure parts can be caused by Regular minifigures that appear more than once or minifigures listed as Alternate Item or Counterpart.

Example comparing BrickLink inventory with LEGO data:

Compare Bricklink- with LEGO data for Set 2148-1

  1. The items that appear in the BrickLink inventory but not in LEGO data are (in this case) retired items and the Sticker Sheet.
  2. The items that appear in LEGO data but are missing in the BrickLink inventory are (in this case) replacement items for old molds. You can see that the old molds are in the Bricklink inventory with a different PCC.
Replacement parts can only be added to an inventory as Alternate Item, when they actually came in that set, not just because they show in the Inventory Comparison Tool.

Example comparing two BrickLink inventories:

Compare Bricklink set 116-1 with 116-2

A nice example showing that Samsonite used different decorated bricks and older variants.
Differences in pending inventories (Inventory Submissions):
Differences are always shown on top of the list.

Missing BrickLink data:
If you uploaded LEGO data for the initial inventory, all that is left are items with a new PCC (not in BrickLink catalog yet).

!! Only submit this new PCC if
  1. Design ID is known in the catalog as Item No or Alternate Item No, or
  2. Moldnumber is known in the catalog.
If not, check if it's a new variant of an existing part. Brickset can be of some help if the new PCC is listed already: it might show DESIGNS WITH THE SAME NAME. If a variant is discovered, contact the Admins or post in the Forum to determine if it requires a new catalog entry or Alternate Item No. Provide clear images or, if possible, comparison images of any differences: Catalog Forum

All other PCC's can be submitted after new items are added to the catalog, or after a new variant is found (and was added as new item or as Alternate Item No).

Final check:
When you added all items to the inventory, the total quantity of parts (including minifigure parts) has to match the piece count printed on the box. If it doesn't match, you might have forgotten to add the sticker sheet(s) or items are missing in LEGO data. Sometimes parts are missing in LEGO data when a switch to a new design is happening. In that case you will have to search for the missing item(s) manually using the actual set and instructions.

After all the work is done (adding new catalog items, Sticker Sheet(s), PCC's and minifigure inventories) the only differences left, should be:
  1. Sticker Sheet(s).
  2. Old variants found in set, while LEGO data shows new variant.
  3. Current variants, while LEGO data shows old PCC's.

Quantity:
- Differences in quantity of minifigure parts can be caused by Regular minifigures that appear more than once or minifigures listed as Alternate Item or Counterpart.
- Differences in quantity of other parts can be caused by Extra Parts or Counterparts accidently listed as Regular Parts.
