Sorry for your loss

It's OK - I'm not going to *gasp* Canada

Not sure which is worse

You’ll find types C and E sockets. Type C plugs also go into type E socket (saying
that because there’s some sockets that absolutely want the ground to be plugged
in or they won’t work).

Which would you recommend?

For a phone or small laptop: type C.  It’s less bulky and goes in all sockets
in France and most sockets in Europe (that is, even the weird types J, K, L of
Switzerland, Danemark and Italy, but not UK).

IIRC, grounded sockets (E or F) are mandatory for new installations but there’s
still a lot of type C sockets and a few don’t allow a type E/F plug.

Depending on where you go (hotel…), you may also find some USB A sockets… but
I wouldn’t count on it (or on them).

I have no idea what type of lodging I'll have to be honest.
