Which would you recommend?

For a phone or small laptop: type C. It’s less bulky and goes in all sockets
in France and most sockets in Europe (that is, even the weird types J, K, L of
Switzerland, Danemark and Italy, but not UK).
IIRC, grounded sockets (E or F) are mandatory for new installations but there’s
still a lot of type C sockets and a few don’t allow a type E/F plug.

| Depending on where you go (hotel…), you may also find some USB A sockets… but
I wouldn’t count on it (or on them).
