Mold variant according to instructions (part color code 4184169)

Unfortunately, instruction booklets are not an accurate source for variants.
LEGO updates
the part numbers long before variants are actually released. Or, they never update
them. They also include variants in sets indiscriminately. Sealed Set Contents
are the only real source.

Another thing I have found, but I'd like to know if it's accurate for
inventories or not.
For example, the set 9392 was release in 2012. For the part 6628, the mold variant
b was released until around 2003, since when it has been replaced by the variant
a.
Are comparisons like that considered accurate to specify some undeterminated
mold variant or not? (for any set I may found later)
