Hi all,

I'm thinking about expanding outside of the USA and offering international
shipping options. I have questions maybe some of you can answer:
- I can't seem to find a current international shipping "share" I
can model after. Can someone share there shipping cost parameters from USA to
other popular countries?
- What percentage of your sales is international?
Do you have a lot of trouble with lost packages shipping internationally?

Thanks for your guidance!

Look into Pirate Ship's "Simple Export Rate" for costs.

I have very few international sales personally - 5 or so to Canada and one to
Germany. Unless you have rare/collectible items you probably won't see much
in the way of int'l sales.

You can look up the Commercial Base rates for USPS First Class Package International
on the USPS website. The rates are listed by Group number and you will need to
investigate which group your country is in.

  - What percentage of your sales is international?

Less than 5% and that includes Canada. Shipping to Canada starts at about $15.
Europe about $16-18, Asia $20. Add another $10 to that if the package is over
8oz. Some countries also have pricey import or customs fees or taxes that the
buyer must pay upon receipt. The cost is a strong deterrent to sales.

Do you have a lot of trouble with lost packages shipping internationally?

No, and the only country that I ship to that ever has delays is Italy. However,
my shipping is restricted mostly to Europe. I haven't had a purchase from
Asia in years.

Thanks for your guidance!

Choose your countries carefully. Some have different import rules, custom form
rules, package rules, VAT rules.

My advice, unless you have lots of rare parts and are willing to learn more about
shipping, would be to just open up to Canada. Set up IC with the 2 weight bands.
Use Pirate Ship to print your labels/customs forms. (Paypal/Shipstation also
works but uses an intermediate shipping location which some people find confusing.)

Good luck,
Jen
