How is it that the component parts for these figs have been uploaded on Law’s
site, while still N/A here
I know it is volunteer powered cataloging on both sites, but consider the glaring
discrepancy of scale between the two. Not to mention a direct affiliation with
TLG for the one. To further the upsidedowness, the minifigure pics over there
are head n’shoulders better than those currently uploaded to the BrickLink catalog
for that set.
Never added the peep parts of new sets, what's needed that I might do? I’ll
get it done if I can get some guidance. Or is it just a question of bottlenecking
vis-à-vis the workload for the volunteer catalog folks here? I honestly don’t
know.
Let me know how we can get those parts into the catalog now rather than later?
PM me if you'd like

First off, I am happy to help if you want to learn to add parts to the catalog.
Do you have these parts in hand? Can you submit some images?
There are very few contributors here and fewer that can work with minifig components
which are fairly complicated. If you look carefully, the parts there are just
the LEGO renders and 'Obi-Wan Kenobi legs' 'Plain Head with Decoration.'
Good luck searching for those!! We have much higher standards for numbers, variants,
and descriptions. Why aren't all our images great? I think if you've
been keeping up with the Forum the last few months, you would know that taking
and uploading a great photograph is far from easy. insert pizza emoji here
TLG does not build or assist with building this catalog. Maybe, just maybe, part
of the problem is our members who have been here using the catalog for 15-plus
years and have never learned how or don't contribute for many reasons. Wink,
wink. Glad you here now. When should we start?
Thanks,
Jen

If that's what's needed, I'll pick up the set. And yes, I've
submitted images here.
|
Awesome! I should note here that you are not explicitly required to have these
in hand and create new images to submit the parts. (It is required for the set
inventory.) It's just highly preferred. How else can we check for duplicates,
mold numbers, accurately describe colors, and show the back of the torso or a
dual-sided head?
|

|
"just the LEGO renders?" and using those is not preferred over not being able
reference or sell the parts entirely
|
To be fair, my statement included just the LEGO renders AND no descriptions.
Yes, I could submit minifig inventories relying exclusively on LEGO data, checking
nothing, and describing nothing and have all these done in 20 minutes. My point
is that is not what we want.

He's doing well in that regard, imo. Learned a lot in a short time.

I'll go ahead and assume you're pointing to me with your "15-plus years,
wink, wink" remarks?
|
Hey, you were asking why we don't have more contributions? I was answering
that it's because we don't have more contributors.
|
Let me buy the set and we'll go from there. I look forward to learning and
contributing, more than I have to date anyway
One things for certain, I can hardly ask for a better teach than a former Inventories
Administrator such as yourself.
|
Happy to help! My offer is open to anyone who wants to submit parts, inventories,
or images to our catalog.
Thanks,
Jen

I guess you missed in my original post, why my curiosity and lack of understanding
for why that would be the case?
"I know it is volunteer powered cataloging on both sites, but consider the
glaring discrepancy of scale between the two"
|
Ah, I see. Well, I don't have direct experience on the other site. They have
a point system for contributors, but since they don't post credit that I
can find for images, inventories or part submitters, track dates or changes,
all the data there is in one big bucket called unknown.
What I can see is that we have more complete information so it takes more
time and effort. Have you tried searching for a part there without first knowing
its set inventory or LEGO Design ID? It's very difficult to look up unknown
parts. Your comparison was for a set where we don't have minifig inventories
and they do. How about one where we have everything and they have, well, less??
Compare the inventories for set 10306 and you'll find no minifig or sticker
sheet image, and an incomplete inventory.
In short, I don't think comparing our 2 catalogs is comparing apples to apples.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that they have set up a space
for selling that does lots of things really well. Many sellers and buyers are
happy there and I have an account too!
Hope that fills in some more information about your question.
Thanks,
Jen

Got the set in hand now. Let's get those parts into the catalog.
|
Cool!
Start at the Catalog -- Add or Change tab. Go ahead and reserve your minifigs
by going to the Add Inventory: - Minifigure page and entering their numbers in
the first column.
Next, go through the instructions and confirm that the minifigs are built as
they appear in their catalog image. (It's always good to double-check.)
Find the parts in the parts list in the instruction booklet or on Brickset and
enter the 7 digit PCC codes in Catalog Search to see which minifig parts may
already be in our catalog.
Decide whether you are going to photograph your parts or just use the LEGO renders.
I recommend creating images if possible for all decorated parts especially torsos
and heads that my have printing on both sides.
Create the images of all the new parts. (max size 800x600 pixels.) Then, I will
give you instructions on adding them to the catalog.
Good luck!
Jen

There are different reasons for adding things to BL's catalogue (it is theirs,
not ours!) Some people want everything in the catalogue. Others want things that
they are selling (or want to buy) in the catalogue. Especially for new minifigures,
I imagine a lot will be kept whole to sell as collectable items and in that sense
the parts entries are less important than the figure entry, and so little motivation
for sellers to add the parts. That cuts down the number of probable contributors.
If BL wanted to ensure minifigure parts are added they could always make a change
along the lines of you can only submit and get credit for a minifigure entry
if you submit photos and all necessary data for the minifigure and also submit
all the entries for the constituent parts. If the contributor has the parts in
hand, they should be able to do the entries. However that would probably just
slow down adding minifigs to the catalogue rather than speed up the adding of
parts.
