| What is the best method of cleaning bricks and minifigures one finds in one's
garden, if they are absolutely caked with dirt? Asking for a friend.

Plant them, they will grow into a lego tree.
Maybe take everything apart and try to brush off as much dirt as possible. You
can also use compressed air to blast off some of the more caked-on dirt (you
can get a can of compressed air relatively inexpensively at most office supply
stores if you do not already have one). Only once most of the dirt is gone would
I use water and some mild soap otherwise you risk having a muddy mess on your
hands.

If only we lived in Narnia in the first days after its creation, I would plant
some bits of the Galaxy Explorer....

I may have understated the magnitude of the problem. The dirt is caked on, but
also filling every possible crevice. Apparently the older kids used to play with
Lego in the garden - which is great, I totally recommend kids playing with Lego,
outside or in! - but now that they've moved on to other pursuits, I'd
like to clean these up a bit so the younger crew can play with them. I didn't
even know they were in the garden until I dug out some weeds

Honestly, if I found LEGOs in my garden, I would probably just throw them out.
Probably better to just buy new ones at this point.
Apparently, there is a beach in Cornwall where LEGO keeps washing up. Many years
ago, a ship carrying LEGO sets sunk somewhere in the North Atlantic. Furthermore,
a lot of the sets were sea-themed, so there are a lot of ship-related elements.

Yes, I've been thinking about buying the book about that. Ordinarily I would
probably throw these parts out but they're in weirdly good shape for having
been buried for a few years. You would think the sandy soil of New Jersey would
have scratched them beyond recognition but they look better preserved than if
they had been played with instead of buried.

Maybe use a toothpick to scrape the dirt out? Not sure how to proceed in this
situation.

Bury them again so someone else can find them in another 50 years time.

Garden earth shouldn't be hard to get off with water and soap, and probably
a toothbrush for the smaller nooks - it may not become collectable again, but
for the kids to play with it should be fine. As a special bonus, put the kids
in the tub and add the Lego, so they can play in there and the cleaning basically
does itself...

| Let it soak a couple of days in a large tub of water, rinse and finish cleaning.
