| I purchased several pounds of LEGO from someone in bulk off of craigslist. I've
gone through about 1,600 bricks so far and found some (20-30 so far) Tyco and
Megabloks mixed in.
First off, is trying to inventory all 25 pounds of bulk lego I bought a pointless
exercise? Also how strongly should I filter out non LEGO bricks when going through
it? I am not planning on reselling anything. I've given up on precisely differentiating
colors already (light gray or bluish light gray? Is this old brick a shade of
nougat? Is it a faded yellow?)
I did notice that Tyco plates are 1/2 brick tall, not 1/3 brick tall which is
interesting

| We usually sort all the non-Lego out into another box and donate that to a local
charity. I would make sure nothing is non-Lego though when you list, so be diligent.

| For a bulk lot off Craigslist, or ebay, I'd consider 20-30 off-brand parts
to be good luck - I've had a lot worse.
Take the time to work through the lot to eliminate all non-lego parts. For one
thing, you'll learn how to tell the "clones" just by the feel. Also, you'll
save frustration later. Even if you are not re-listing for sale, there is no
point in inventorying and storing parts you won't ever use.
One caution for beginners, is sometimes something that doesn't look like
Lego, actually IS Lego. I almost tossed a few very unusual but valuable parts
because I didn't recognize them as Lego.

Any such decision depends on what your goals are. If you were to resell parts
(which you indicated you would not), filtering out non-LEGO and getting the colors
correct is vital. If you use the bricks for personal playing, then who cares?
There are non-LEGO parts that offer functionality or aesthetics that LEGO
does not offer. If it is something in between, then use your own judgment.
I'd say stop worrying and start building!
Niek.

If you are not selling them, don't bother to sort out the non-LEGO parts.
Just put them to one side when they appear as you are using them.
