As someone who has bought a ton of LEGO sets (mostly for my 6-year-old son, whose
LEGO obsession will soon lead to a life in dire poverty) but has not sold any
yet, I am wondering if it makes sense to purchase the LEGO World Map 31203 and
then perhaps re-sell it (used or new/sealed). I usually don't see sets as
an investment, but I live near a LEGOLAND and their store sells 31203 for $250,
whereas on eBay and Bricklink it is available for $300-$350. However, at least
on eBay the supply is huge, and it is not clear to me if there is much demand.
Feel free to roast this novice now ...

I wouldn't, not at those margins. If you sell for $300, then after losing
10% in fees (eBay / paypal) you are down to $270. Is the risk worth $20? Plus
it will be discounted at some stage, there will be more competition for sales,
prices will be at the low end, it looks like it could be a pain to ship. Look
at what has happened to the prices of the art sets, which this is comparable
to.

The first thing I would say is how quickly would you be looking to sell, if you
are looking to sell it almost once you have got it, then as Yorbrick says, probably
not worth it.

However if you are considering holding on to it for several years before looking
to sell (which is how I would see an investment) Then it may be worth it, as
Lego only make sets for at most a couple of years before they are discontinued.
This combined with when potential buyers become aware of the set(s). I had this
with the Ninja theme, I happened to stumble across it by fluke and it was just
when they were stopping the theme, which meant over the subsequent years buying
them from elsewhere.

The short answer is a question ... how long are you willing to hold and store
to get a solid return ? Pretty much all of the sets I am selling were being retailed
anywhere between 10 and 25 years ago. Are you willing to hold for that long ?
