| Hello everyone
First of all I want to say I am quite new to bricklink and this is my first post
in the discussion forum. This is why I am asking for help. I recently bought
from someone who I will not name, that sold some *new* bricks that has quite
a lot of scratches. On the image below you can see a sample of some of the bricks.
I bought some more, and I would say 10-30% of them had these kind of scratches.
Since I am quite new, I do not have a lot of experience buying new bricks, which
means I might be completely wrong, but in my opinion the bricks has so many scratches
it can not be called new. Am I just nitpicking? Any help is appreciated, thank
you for reading.

Well... if this is "new" then many of my used old pat pend bricks of 50 years
old look better!

| Hi, welcome to BrickLink! These bricks don't look new to me; however, it's
just barely possible they were listed as "new" because they were never used,
and have acquired that degree of scratching due to being handled, moved around,
etc. I say "barely possible" and not "likely" because that does look like playwear
(and years of it) to me. It's also possible that the seller listed used parts
as new by accident, or received "new" parts him- or herself and didn't give
them a close inspection before listing them. In any case it would definitely
be good to bring this up to the seller to see if you can work something out.
I've found that most sellers are willing to give a refund or send replacements.

100% not "NEW". While some scratches can happen to new bricks, that definitely
doesn't look like the case here. Especially the top and the 4th brick. Which
is why I wouldn't give the seller the benefit of the doubt on the 2nd and
3rd brick. Cause those bricks look horrendous as well and have definitely lost
the shine of a new brick

New does not mean not scratched, it simply means it has never been used. Many
LEGO parts come out of the box with a variety of scratches. Bricks, Tiles, and
Panels are the worst at showing these types of light scratches. You can more
definitively tell that a brick has been used by worn-down edges and pressure
markings on the underside. That being said, most good sellers do try and sort
out New bricks that have noticeable damage.
On the other hand, a few sellers on BrickLink do try to sell used as New and
get away with it. You can usually sus them out by inspecting their feedback for
consistent remarks. Some sellers also throw all your parts in one loose bag and
they get scratched and damaged during shipping.
You should let your seller know (politely) that you have some concerns about
the bricks. Perhaps they mixed up the order? They should try to work with you.
If you get a defensive or accusatory response, then Least Favorite them and move
on. There are lots of great sellers on BrickLink!

Thank you very much everyone this really helps . I guess there is nothing more
to do than to contact the seller.

Most definitely - the majority of sellers are very nice and reasonable people
in my experience here and will normally try to resolve an issue. You get the
odd bad egg but they are few and far between. Send a polite message and see what
comes back
Good luck and welcome to bricklink. Dont let this put you off - it may be as
simple as the seller picked used bricks in error rather than new !

New parts can come with a scratch here and there, but that looks completely different
then this. This scratching and scuffing on your picture is achieved by continuously
searching through a mount of bricks. A new brick with scratching will have a
few large scratches, not a high amount of scuffing like we see here.
These are used bricks.

It might also be a good idea to take a photo of new bricks from a set you have
opened under the same conditions to compare, especially if the light is harsh
and picks up tiny scratches not visible to the eye. These definitely look more
scratched than normal, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are used. Some
PAB parts can have scratches like that if someone has continually ran their hand
through the bin, but they are defined as new at the point of sale.

That was a good idea, thank you. I have a Technic, Brick 1 x 12 with Holes, which
I bought from another seller here on bricklink (also as new of course), and while
the 1 x 12 had some few scratches it was nothing compared to the 1 x 8 brick.
I am definetely glad I tried this because this just confirms me in the fact that
it was the right choice to contact the seller. Thanks to everyone here for the
great help .
