Ok brief history. I am still a green horn when it comes to Bricklink orders.
I have ordered three times and asked on two different occasions for a 2x2x2 3940a.
What I get delivered is a 3940b. Will the part work sure but they are not period
correct. I have done maybe a dozen or so orders on Bricklink and 3 have
been filled with errors. One has not shipped till 9 days after although the
shipping label has been created on the 8th day. Is anyone else have luck like
this? I am sorry for complaining but tired of oh we will just refund your part.
Too bad your out the shipping and thanks for buying my other items and p*** off.
Really looking for constructive advice. I have not left negative feedback but
damn I am not made of money. Was hoping I found a better place than Ebay.

The specific part that you are looking for would be prone to errors. Especially
if someone was manually sorting and saw the description for 3940a. If I am ever
unsure about an a/b identity I usually say so in the description "Identified
as 3940a, but there is a possibility it could be 3940b."

If I were you, and was looking for a particular mould variation I would contact
the seller and ask them to confirm before ordering, or maybe sending a photo.
As long as people are polite I usually don't have an issue doing a little
extra work. The worst that would happen is the seller says I can't do that,
then you know to move on to the next one.

I hope you get your part!

Naturally you should expect to receive the part that you ordered, however this
is my advice as buyer on BL and as seller:
- There are ways too many variants on BL. Most sellers are not aware of the majority
of variations. I persoanlly have contributed a lot to the catalog and made many
changes. I know most variations of vintage parts but NOT all of them. Even when
I know variations, I forget or I do not have time to check variations of the
parts buyer have ordered from me, specially since most buyers do not
care
about variations. SOo when I order from other sellers, I write a note
like this:
Please double check that the parts I ordered are 3940a and they are not 3940b.
Please check and compare their photos. If they are not 3940a, please cancel the
order (or remove those parts from my order).
This is the message I sent to a seller on Bricklink:

ould you please tell me if your white windows 27c01

Part No: 27c01  Name: Window 1 x 2 x 1 with Trans-Clear Glass (27 / 27glass)
*
27c01 (Inv) Window 1 x 2 x 1 with Trans-Clear Glass (27 / 27glass)
Parts: Window

are with glass not fixed. Because some people confuse it with 27ac01 whose glass
is fixed.

Seller's answer: Sorry for late answer! You're welcome to ask - when
I had closer look at the 7 windows, only 4 were left, which are really 27c01.
One was 27b and two 27. Now I still learn about those windows .

**********

I should also note what I know about this part. The second variation

Part No: 3940b  Name: Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Complete Hole
*
3940b Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Complete Hole
Parts: Support
was first produced in 1984. However, depending on the location of the Lego manufacture
and the color, different sets produced or released between 1984-86 (or 1987..)
came with

Part No: 3940a  Name: Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Blind Hole
*
3940a Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Blind Hole
Parts: Support
or

Part No: 3940b  Name: Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Complete Hole
*
3940b Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Complete Hole
Parts: Support

For example, maybe TLG ran out of gray 3940a in 1984 so those sets coming with
3940a in 1984 came with 3940a (this includes those sets released in 1982 or 1983
or 1981....) who were still produced and in market in 1984 and later.
But maybe the black

Part No: 3940a  Name: Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Blind Hole
*
3940a Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Blind Hole
Parts: Support
was still in the stock of TLG so they kept using them to the end or 1986 or 1987
until they ran out of them and then, they produced and used black since 1987
(or 1988)

Part No: 3940b  Name: Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Complete Hole
*
3940b Support 2 x 2 x 2 Stand with Complete Hole
Parts: Support

All of this to say that DO NOT TRUST 100% of what you see on the Bricklink's
inventories. The situation is a mess and it is hard to impossible to expect perfect
accurecy on Bricklink.

First of all, I’m sorry about the setbacks.

25% order error rate is close to what I have been getting after about 90 orders
placed. I got missing/very dirty/damaged/wrong color/wrong mold parts and got
varying refund amounts for them. I started to leave Neutral feedback when I’m
only refunded the parts’ price, more than that cover part of the shipping of
an ulterior order so I leave a Positive feedback.

I still would trust BrickLink over eBay. I’m not sure you can place orders on
there as specific as I have been doing on BrickLink. But ultimately BL stores
are all different, some are true specialists but many others are more casual,
as exemplified by the varying levels of quality I’ve observed for Used lots.
There is no way to know in advance so if a specific mold is important to you,
I would reach out to the seller prior to ordering to request pictures for example.

This part is pretty easy to distinguish a vs b. On another note, We have always
stood by the policy that if I have to refund you for any reason, you will be
refunded for shipping also. That way you can get the part you need and
not have to spend on shipping a second time. It's the right thing to do.

I feel that most BL buyers and sellers have a common goal in mind or did at some
point at least. For the most part that this is not ebay. Sellers are not simply
driven by $$. There are obviously a few though that don't give a crap. Just
my 2 cents.

Thanks to all that responded. I appreciate the offer of parts as well. I will
just have to be a bit more careful then and ask for specifics when ordering a
specific variation of like parts.
