I never quite understand some sellers fees. Paypal fees (which in many cases
are higher than the seller is charged) , extortionate packing fees. I've
also seen so called environmental charges. Now I've just been asked for a
random 2.49% fee. A lot of these fees are not stated. I know I can go and buy
elsewhere. Guess what? I do.
Why not be up front? Allow for these charges in your prices and save everyone
else a lot of time.

I agree

Allow for these charges in your prices and save everyone else a lot of time.

Fees (hidden or overt) are analogous to taxes, in that we may understand them
but no one likes them. An irritant to buyers. I’ve heard many arguments for
the practice of added fees, from others here over the years. When all is said
and done though, it’s simply better business to fold any added costs into
the advertised price. Make it simple and painless to shop, is the idea.

imho, of course

Because:

Extra fees make the "base" price look better.

Bricklink doesn't include fees in the 3% charge.

Some buyers (especially newer ones), don't notice, don't care or don't
want to go through the hassle of finding another store.

Here's a recent thread about a store that takes the hidden fee concept to
the extreme:

I've seen an increase in the number of sellers having additional fees over
the last 6 months ( my experience ) and an ever increasing number with numerous
fees added for all sorts of reasons.

I do have to smile at the increasing number of sellers complaining about getting
too many orders of numerous lots, that's most of your orders if you have
a smaller shop.

I have a smaller shop and many of my orders are small ... but as unfun as picking
a large order is, I'd rather get one large order than 10 small ones

Never add fees. Price the items to reflect expenses so they are seen as compatible
to others listings. A buyer should not have to compare prices for an item and
then get out a calculator to see see who is listing that item at the lowest price.

WHY CAN SELLERS NOT SET A PRICE THAT REFLECTS THEIR EXTRA EXPENSES? That is
the honest way to do it. I see a part for $1.00 and and another for $1.00 and
the first one has no fees (other than actual cost shipping) and the second has
fees that add up to 20%. Why should they get away with that? The part actually
cost $1.20 not 1 dollar. Any way that seller 2 wants to twist it, the part actual
price is $1.20. It is not up-front pricing because the buyer has to dig through
terms to calculate the actual cost. "Come on man." Sorry for the quote. I had
bought and sold a lot here. I never charged a fee for anything and was quite
successful here. I was honest and when an item was bought the buyer knew what
the piece cost.
I am sure that fee charging stores don't really care. Fees also do not enhance
a buying experience. I cared, not sure what the fee charging seller feels.
By the way, I am charging you a $5 fee for reading this. Just send it to my
paypal address.

The vast majority of parts in my shop cost $.10 or less. I am out ~$.65 to ship
an order that is at my minimum buy at $3.00. I am competing with shops that claim
they charge no fees and then pad their shipping costs. I think actual postage
+ my $.75 fee is totally and completely fair.
How many sales would I lose if I increased prices enough to cover costs on small
orders? Or raised my minimum high enough to soak up all expenses? Buyers prefer
a low minimum buy, and I can't expect to sell inexpensive parts way over
their 6 months average.

So, that's why.

Because it's hard. All sellers go through an evolution of how they do things
over time. I would venture to guess that most sellers starting out add lots of
fees. There are a couple of reasons for that I'm sure you can imagine and
I don't care to write down here. As sellers evolve, they have more profit
and feel more comfortable and adjust their pricing structure.

Now in the examples above, are the sellers not being honest? I would suggest
most are not. So no, there is not just one way to sell honestly on BL.

My personal evolution was the same. I started with fees, then I adjusted my fees,
then I removed all fees. Was I being dishonest in my selling when I charged fees?
No, I don't think I was. I still have to charge tax in the additional fees
area for Canadians because BL doesn't include Canadian taxes yet. Does that
make me dishonest?

I don't think we need to paint every seller who charges additional fees with
the same brush, that's the honest way to do it.

I see your point, but I still think that the real price of an item is not displayed
when searching. I have seen so many posts complaining about fees, never one
saying anything about how fair they are. Customer service was so important to
me, far more than making a sale with a guaranteed price as listed.
You make a cogent argument and I do see your point. Tax, in my opinion, is not
a fee. It is a requirement and that can be listed. You cannot sell without
tax.
Having said this, I did fine and if I lost a dollar here and there, that was
ok. No surprises when the invoice was sent to the buyer.
Things do happen that cost a seller money. When I sell on ebay, when I put a
weight in, and I am wrong, I sell at the postage cost ebay quotes. I have had
people cancel a purchase on me because of postage. If too much postage is charged
when I sell, I refund the extra postage even though they paid with the postage
quoted.
In summation, I would not buy from a seller that charged fees and I would not
sell with fees. I have sold almost a half million here with very happy customers,
I have probably bought more than that. And that money went to stores without
fees.
