My first LEGO set as a kid was the Alpha-1 Rocket Base. Fast forward 40+
years and I've been building LEGO sets with by two boys for almost a decade.
The one constant over the years is that the original sets never last long, but
the imagination and creativity to make brand new creations is constantly evolving.

Years of building Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter, and LEGO City sets resulted
in thousands of pieces in multiple storage bins. After repurposing dismantled
sets recently, I wanted to try a "My Own Creation" project with my boys that
took things to an entirely new level.

The love of LEGO, superheroes, and making things together inspired taking on
this MOC project. I plan to keep track of this project and share progress, ask
questions, and get feedback.

PHASE 0 — Planning the Plan
There have been many variations on Batman, Wayne Manor, and the Batcave since
the character appears in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Then add in
the 1960s TV show, cartoons, movies, video games, more movies, and stand alone
graphic novels.

The good news is that there is a lot of source material to reference for this
project. The bad news is that there is a lot of nuance and variation across decades
of that source material.

The original plan for the MOC was just to build out the Batcave, but the scope
quickly expanded to include Wayne Manor too. And a quick search of some other
MOCs done related to Batman were either too big or too small. The goal was to
build something in the middle — and to have some fun doing it.

This meant planning out three structures that would need to come together at
some point.
1) A multi-level stately Wayne Manor.
2) A multi-level Batcave underneath.
3) A surrounding support structure.

For Wayne Manor, I considered using a modified version of The Joker Manor
set. There were some pros and cons to using this as a basis for Wayne Manor.
But ultimately, I decided to use the Brick Builder Pro plans for Knighthall Manor.
This is a multi-level 3,500+ piece build. All of the initial pieces were ordered
and that gave me time to plan how all of this might fit together.

For the Batcave, I decided to use several of the LEGO sets as a starting point
for parts and consistent colors. This included The Batcave, Batcave
Break-In
, and Batcave Clayface Invasion sets. These sets arrived and
there was starting to be some excitement and questions about when we could get
started putting things together.

For the support structure, I started to watch and read everything that I could
find online about building rocks, mountains, and multi-level structures. We took
some existing parts to play around with ideas of how things might fit together.

Finally, I setup the BrickLink account to keep track of pieces, minifigures,
and sets that would be needed. I also got some more LEGO organizing bins to begin
storing parts as they came in.

In the next post, I'll share an update on progress and some initial pictures
of the Wayne Manor + Batcave MOC.

Here is the next updated on the Wayne Manor + Batcave MOC project.

PHASE 1 — Preparing and Prototyping
The next phase was in motion while lots of parts are on order from around the
globe. This time was mainly focused on experimenting with the foundation for
Wayne Manor, the overall length and width of the MOC, and starting to prototype
some building concepts.

The foundation work involved pinning together multiple Technic, Brick 16 x 16
x 1 1/3 with Holes pieces in green and black. I needed to have enough space for
the Wayne Manor structure and some buffering at the back and edges. The result
is a MOC that will be 80 studs long and 48 studs wide.

After scavenging a lot of black, grey, and yellow parts it was time to try prototyping
some of the Batcave structures. At some point in the project, we will need to
build outer facing mountain structures along with the interior of the Batcave.
At this point of the project it was also a chance to try out some ideas and get
a sense of what would be both feasible and structurally sound.

One working idea is stacking container boxes on top of technic plates with an
axle reinforcing the paneling on the inside. Started to think about rock formations
using multiple rock parts and slopes. Then some experimentation with tiles and
technic pieces to hold Batman's "wonderful toys" in place.

Next up is a lot of structure assembly and starting to build Wayne Manor.

Here is the next updated on the Wayne Manor + Batcave MOC project.

PHASE 2 — Form and Function
The next phase of work was addressing fundamental structural and functional design
for the project. The big concern is weight and the ability to support a multi-level
structure.

The Batcave not only has to serve as the secret of location for the Dark Knight,
but the entire structure needs to support Wayne Manor above. This involved building
out multiple support piers that can support the weight of each level, but also
be completely hidden from view.

The initial work was to build five (5) identical support piers for the lowest
level of the Batcave. The piers themselves are made of multiple interlocking
Technic bricks. The underlying structure supports a cantilevered top level to
give spacing for the outside rock structures.

This was repetitive building work with piles of the required parts piled up.
It's too early to tell if we've over-built these support piers, but it
will not be long before they get tested.

Some of the other work was to move from prototyping different parts of the inside
of the Batcave to some actual build work. One area of the Batcave will show the
evolution of Batman's costume over time. A lot of cost and care have gone
into sourcing and assembling minifigures that are historically accurate.

At this phase in the project, there is enough design done and LEGO parts to start
building. This is turning into a very non-linear process so far, but that has
not created any issues so far.

A lot of progress and a lot of lessons learned. Still acquiring some key parts
for Wayne Manor.

In the meantime, we have started building out various parts of the Batcave. One
thing that is very important on this MOC is to get the details right. Making
sure that different elements are as accurate or identifiable with the comics
or movies is very important.

A few examples of the inspiration and the MOC version.

Finally started construction on Wayne Manor. Needed to get all the parts together
and have kept busy on sections of the Batcave.

Making a few iterative edits to the design of the first floor including the floor
tiles and positioning of the fireplace.

I missed this thread when you started it, I'm glad you keep adding to it
so that I could catch up, looking forward to the next iteration!

Work on stately Wayne Manor continues. That includes what we plan to build on
the grounds of the estate.

This is a work in progress on a Victorian style greenhouse that will be behind
the mansion. This is inspired by the opening scene in Batman Begins.

The outside is nearly done and we will fill it with plants over time.

I have created an album on Flickr after years of not using that site very much.
Updates will still be posted here, but I wanted a place to keep a growing number
of work in progress photos.

In other news, the first floor of Wayne Manor is taking shape. Custom printed
floor tile in the entry to the mansion. Making some changes to the original building
plans to accommodate some important "hidden" features that need to be built.

We are continuing to work on the three sections of the first floor. Making more
design changes on the interior and exterior.

Planning to cut holes for the Batcave secret entrance. Also need to re-think
how the spiral staircase to the second floor is going to work.
