And I will, since I already put the store in my disliked store list so I never
have to deal with them again. Also I don't understand why you are escalating
this to banning me from your store over a discussion board post. I'm allowed
to voice an opinion here, and banning a potential customer from your store not
only make little to no sense from a business perspective, it also makes you look
immature.

I think you are a bit too harsh, he / she seems to be quite new and may not know
how things work here, including that one should not expose a Buyer or Seller
on the forum so that the person can be identified by others (except maybe for
obvious cases of scam).

I may be getting confused then as to what Priority mail entails but almost every
seller I've purchased from on this site in the United States used priority
mail and charged only $3-5 for shipping. Some of which even shipped in a small
box and still charged the same. So I'm just confused as to how it can jump
so much.

Ok, It looks like I was getting priority mail and first class confused since
this is the first store I've ever seen use priority mail. I'm not entirely
sure as to why they don't use first class but it's their store, not mine.
I'll just avoid the store from now on (and others that only use priority
mail) and I'll try to remove this discussion board thread if possible. Thanks
for clarifying this for me.

It's easy to be confused. Shipping isn't always self explanatory. Be
aware that USPS also changed their shipping policy a month or so ago and now
ship based on Dimensional Pricing vs weight which makes shipping larger packages
even more expensive. I won't get into it, but you can look it up if you
are interested.

Dang I was not aware of this change. I hope that this doesn't affect shipping
prices here for first class, but I'm glad that I got most of my orders in

Just be aware of it if you ever order 2-3 sets from someone that shipping is
not cheap anymore. It never really was, but it keeps going up up up every year.

A few small corrections:

The change in shipping happened in January, not a month ago. USPS changes their
rates around the third week of January every year, and that's the only time
they change them -- at least in the last 5 years.

And while Priority Mail has been using zones + weight to determine cost for many
years (unless you use Flat Rate packaging), First Class also added zones into
the cost determination this January.

The RATES change in January, but the Dimensional Calculator changed in June which
effects how much it costs to ship larger shipments as dimensional sizes will
usually raise the cost of your shipping.

To quote the article "This has a big impact on e-commerce merchants shipping
packages that are especially large and lightweight."

Which is Lego big-time. Shipping that cost around $20-$25 went to $40. I'm
talking about orders of 10 sets at a time that require a very large box but don't
necessarily weight much.

With a handling charge, $10.60 does not seem overpriced for priority mail. First
class yes, but not for priority.

I hope that this doesn't affect shipping
prices here for first class, but I'm glad that I got most of my orders in
before this change.

It does not effect 1st class as 1st class are smaller packages less than 1 lb.

Here's a 2019 chart for First Class via PayPal/commercial pricing: https://geteverestapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/USPS-Shipping-rate-changes-rate-2019-table-4.png

Here's a 2019 chart for Priority Mail: https://geteverestapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/USPS-Shipping-rate-changes-rate-2019-table-3.png

Here's a 2019 chart for Priority Mail Flat Rate packages (using USPS's
free boxes and envelopes): https://cdn.shipworks.com/wp-images/Screen-Shot-2019-01-17-at-8.35.19-AM-600x299.png

Damn! You're right. I misread your post and didn't realize you were talking
about dimensional pricing. I apologize.

Not a problem. Figuring out shipping and box sizes for shipping can be a real
pain in the butt. Every INCH cut off of a box size that still allows for proper
protection is sometimes very crucial as the price just keeps jumping up and multiplies
fast.

Some buyers when putting in very large orders will ask for a discount. Which
I have no problem with them asking, but it is so crucial now to understand exactly
what they are buying before quoting anything because before you know it the shipping
costs is near $50 when 4 months ago it would have been $20, which was much easier
to wheel and deal with without getting burned yourself.

Yeah, I hear you. I noticed it when the price for shipping a sealed 1,000-piece
set doubled. I've definitely spent my share of time taking a razorblade to
boxes to make them a few inches smaller.

The seller isn't choosing priority. All US seller use it. USPS makes you
use it
if the order is 1 lb. There isn't really another option.

I would think everyone would be using Commercial prices to gauge shipping costs.

If you are a store and not printing your own labels you are A) either losing
out on money yourself and B) charging your customers more than is necessary or
C) Charging more than is necessary and pocketing the difference by claiming you
are using first class retail.

Here are Commercial 1st class rates which is what you get when printing via Paypal
and many other sources of online postage printing.

HOLY SCHNIKEYS!
USPS calculated 4.06 to ship from my zip to Seatle WA.
Then paypal calculates $3.09.

I didnt realize there was that much advantage to printing the shipping through
PayPal.

I am updating my shipping chart right now !

Thanks for the tip!

If I may ask, how were you doing it before?

Standing in line at the post office?

Be careful with the zone thing too. You may not be able to ship everwhere at
$3.25 (though you are centrally located, so maybe you can. I know I can't)

Priority Mail starts around $7-8 minimum for zones that are very close (within
zone 1-4). A 1-2 lb priority mail to zone 7 runs over $10 alone.

First Class Postage ranges from about $3 to $6 depending on zone and weight.

Maybe this link will help with USA Priority Mail

Here's a chart that shows Priority Mail rates for 2019: https://geteverestapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/USPS-Shipping-rate-changes-rate-2019-table-3.png

As you can see, the cheapest available shipping via Priority Mail is $6.95. With
PayPal's shipping discount, that goes down to $6.35, but that's the absolute
cheapest it gets. The sellers you're referring to either massively undercharged
themselves or, more likely, were using First Class.

Here's a quick explanation of USPS shipping:

First Class (3-5 days) is for anything up to 1 pound. It's not available
at all for higher weights. It costs between $2.76 and $5.53, depending on weight
and zone, via PayPal.

Priority (2-3 days) is available for any weight up to 70 pounds. For Lego orders,
it typically costs between $6.35 and $14.00. You can also use USPS's pre-sized
boxes and envelopes, which all have a set rate no matter the weight. The most
commonly used are Flat Rate Padded Envelopes ($7.55), Small Flat Rate Boxes ($7.50),
and Medium Flat Rate Boxes ($12.80).

If I had to guess, I'd say that this seller is probably using the flat rate
boxes (which USPS offers for free) and newspapers for packing so that they don't
have to spend any money on handling and can make an extra few dollars off of
every order. They probably were going to ship in a Small Flat Rate Box, and tacked
on $3.00 for "handling" (read: profit). While most sellers on this site are honest,
I've had very similar things happen to me before. That seller's terms
page is full of red flags, like all of those capitalized words and his general
attitude. He seems to think he's doing buyers a favor, rather than providing
a service. Best thing to do is ignore sellers like that.

Another way to avoid these sellers is simply to never buy from anyone who only
uses Priority Mail. And I usually specifically ask for First Class shipping in
the comments when I make an order under 14 ounces.

Yeah that's a lot of good points. I gotta keep this in mind that flat rate
is always an option. But you were spot on with the stores red flags, they are
extremely rude to everyone and are quick to blame customers who "don't read
the store's policy" whenever someone complains about the high shipping cost.

at all for higher weights.

But you were spot on with the stores red flags, they are
extremely rude to everyone and are quick to blame customers who "don't read
the store's policy" whenever someone complains about the high shipping cost.

here are his terms

***We ship via the United States Postal Service PRIORITY MAIL ONLY.*** NO free
shipping what so ever. We can not do overnight express due to the fact we ONLY
use the free postal service pick up service. All items WILL BE BOXED, NO BUBBLED
ENVELOPES (yes, including sticker and minifigure orders, NO exceptions). There
is a handling fee on ALL orders (this gets added into the shipping cost)). Sorry
but we DO NOT give out shipping quotes. Insurance is optional & WILL be billed
at cost. We are NOT responsible for lost or stolen packages or damaged items
if you elect not to insure your order. US buyers ONLY. ***Please note we will
only ship to the buyer, we will not send to someone else or a different address
as adding a different address in the order or in paypal comments will not be
accepted per PayPal rules.*** Shipping times depend upon payment time received
as we use the postal service pick up service, we need to inform them of a pick
up which is not effective till next day. We don't always ship next day due
to work schedule, so please be patient. FYI, packing product I use is newspapers,
sometimes peanuts (to cushion the Legos). Thank you. We are non-smokers but we
do own a cat.

Did you even read my original post? I stated that I canceled the order and will
not be purchasing from them again any time soon. I don't understand what
is with your attitude here, but it seems like I should be avoiding your store
too.

seller I've purchased from on this site in the United States used priority

As you can see, the cheapest available shipping via Priority Mail is $6.95. With
PayPal's shipping discount, that goes down to $6.35, but that's the absolute
cheapest it gets. The sellers you're referring to either massively undercharged
themselves or, more likely, were using First Class.

If the store doesn't clearly display shipping/handling charges, he has every
right to object if they're unreasonable. Granted, it's better not to
buy from those stores at all. But regardless, every buyer has a right to question
charges that aren't displayed clearly. If I make an order that weighs 2 ounces
and get charged the price for a 14-ounce package, I sure as hell will object
(calmly and politely) to the seller.

As mentioned in my previous message, it is easier to follow that principle (dont
like dont buy) if you know the full costs before placing an order. Hence the
IC is the best option for both buyers and sellers alike. Costs are clear when
you place the order and no one can complain afterwards.

Actually in my view BL should change the rules such that every buyer can cancel
any order from a store that has no instant checkout because buyer was not able
to see the full cost when placing the order.

Now I understand. You have lot limit fees but do not support automatic average
lot value calculation. I wonder what is the purpose of this?

This seems normal, but not once do they mention what the handling cost is or
an estimated shipping cost. As a result, I get the invoice, and the seller wanted
to charge me $10.60 for shipping only around 30 bricks, which is WAY MORE than
what I've ever paid for shipping on this site, and that's INCLUDING international!
As a result we canceled the order but the seller was extremly rude about it,
claiming that I "didn't read the store policy" before I placed the order.
With that being said, I wanted to know if stores are allowed to overcharge for

or order page. I've read the stores reviews and apparently they've been
doing this for quite some time now, with a lot of people complaining about the

TL;DR, Store is overcharging on shipping without making it clear on their stores
shipping policy what buyers should expect

Thanks everyone, looking back to hearing about this

If you do not want to get unexpected surprises in your invoice, just buy exclusively
from stores that offer instant checkout. Then you see exactly what you have to
pay and what you get. And you can decide if you want it or not before committing
to buy.

I have started to really like the instant checkout, not least because no one
can trick with the lot limit fees any more when choosing this option. And no
need to read through pages of store terms as well.

  Hello everyone,

So recently I placed an order with one of the stores here on the website that
tried to overcharge me on shipping and handling. Just to give you some background
info, I live in the United States and have purchased bricks from everywhere around
the world, ranging from germany to hawaii. When I went to place an order for
this store, there was no option on the order page to see how much I was going
to be charged for shipping, the only option I had was to place an invoice. The
sellers store shipping policy states:

"We ship via the United States Postal Service PRIORITY MAIL ONLY.*** NO free
shipping what so ever.
Thank you."

With that being said, I wanted to know if stores are allowed to overcharge for
shipping and handling without being clear about it in their stores shipping policy
or order page. I've read the stores reviews and apparently they've been
doing this for quite some time now, with a lot of people complaining about the
high price and the owner responding that they "didn't read the store policy".

Or ask for a quote too

Yeah the store's shipping policy states that they don't give out shipping
quotes but I will more careful with stores that require an invoice for shipping
from now on since this wasn't the most pleasant experience.

Not to shamelessly promote. But I'm in California, give quotes, and have
instant checkout. There are a couple of other California sellers that do to.
I do agree that that sellers terms make me cringe a little, but they also aren't
awful.

So like, I wouldn't buy there, but I also can't knock them.

The postal rates vary now by location, so if you stick to CA stores, you may
get even cheaper shipping. My IC is set to $3.50, but if I manually invoice,
I've sent things to other Californias for a little over $2. I can recommend
a few stores if you'd like that I've bought from before here in CA

My IC under 4 oz is at $2.99.

Nothing wrong with promoting, this is a business after all.

I was considering that but it's difficult to only find stores in CA that
have the parts I want since I am collecting bionicles. I'll try to negotiate
though with California sellers to see if I could get a lower price on shipping
next time!

Ah yes, bionicle is a difficult find sometimes. I know there is a couple stores
geared towards that, but they aren't in the USA

Oh, I didn't know anyone collected those. I have a whole 35+ gallon tub of
bionicle parts that I just toss in there from other sorting. Kind of like sorting
out Mega Bloks and such though I've found other places to sell those. I'll
have to take the time to list some perhaps.

Def worth it in my experience, provided you don't spend too much time figuring
out what on earth you are looking at. I'm decent at it now, but learning
the part names from scratch was a bit rough since I didn't grow up with them

Funny, seller edited the terms page after this thread posts....

"Message from Seller
Working on some inventory. Be back tomorrow afternoon. By then hopefully folks
understand my shipping terms which I believe are clear and understandable."

Not the easiest swamp of lettering to muddle through, using some formatting might
keep ones attention.
Learnful material there

Dang I'm suprised you found the store, I was trying to keep it anonymous
lol. But yeah they did change that after what happened yesterday so clearly the
seller has issues tbh.

LOL so the seller must have found the thread and has since closed there store
AGAIN with the message:

"Want to thank the nice bricklink community out there for what they said. Bless
you all. See you tomorrow."

Seems like they really are losing it.
