Hello All,

Managed to buy and restore this classic set (including both trays and plastic
cover, even the backing paper for the Flag stickers was present!).

Just a small observation:

Front of box photo shows 3x white air-tanks - 1 on the white minifig on the mono-rail
car and 2 on the air-tank holders - either side of the building. 1 for the white
spaceman inside and the other for a third white spaceman, who's out of shot?
indesposed? or visiting from another set?

Anyway, instructions and inventories I've looked at only show 2 white air-tanks.

I'm sure I have another white air-tank waiting on a spaceman that could make
the set match the photo. Yes the 2 red and 1 lt-grey air-tanks were present and
correct.

Also noticed that on the large 'screen' printed piece 'LL2079'
(also appears on 926 large screen) 100 years into the future from 1979. Even
though my set's catalogue dates from 1981.

All in all it's a fantastic set and sits proudly with 928. Whereas my wife
and I are pushed to one end of the dining table!

Regards,

Karl.

Others with more experience will chime in I hope, but its my understanding that
the box art wasn't accurate on many of the older sets. With a sprinkling
of it well into the 90's and the occasional misprint beyond that (I recall
a harry potter set like this) where the instruction or box image did not match
the set. So it does happen.

Also keep in mind the catalog isn't 100% accurate. I've had many moment
with inventoring classic space and oddly, blacktron 2, where the molds listed
didn't match the set in my hand that was extremely likely to be original
pieces. Also at this point, some of these sets have zig zagged the world and
there are European variants of sets, USA variants, etc. I have some classic space
boxes that I bought here in the US that are written in German, or have other
foreign price tags. So all bets are off!

Set No: 6970 Name: Beta I Command Base
*
6970-1 (Inv) Beta I Command Base
243 Parts, 4 Minifigs, 1980
Sets: Space: Classic Space

Others with more experience will chime in I hope, but its my understanding that

I thought I remembered an earlier discussion about this third white 3838. I
can’t find it, it might have been erased.
Though there’s this thread about radios:
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1023329

Also keep in mind the catalog isn't 100% accurate. I've had many moment
with inventoring classic space and oddly, blacktron 2, where the molds listed
didn't match the set in my hand that was extremely likely to be original
pieces.

The catalogue tries to keep track of sets that have been redesigned, like

Set No: 6987 Name: Message Intercept Base
*
6987-1 (Inv) Message Intercept Base
540 Parts, 5 Minifigs, 1988
Sets: Space: Blacktron I

It’s better if you have proofs to make proper change requests but you can still
come here to talk about your doubts and suspicions.
More such discussions would balance the, let’s say “more emotional” ones

Also at this point, some of these sets have zig zagged the world and
there are European variants of sets, USA variants, etc. I have some classic space
boxes that I bought here in the US that are written in German, or have other

Thank you for the radio thread.

Honestly, unless its a sealed set, I don't feel its proper to bring it up,
since it is technically speculation on my part, and I know that fact will be
quickly pointed out.

I will say its my opinion that the listings for head mold types on many
90's sets on this site (especially blacktron 2) are wrong. But again, I cannot
prove this so there isn't really a point making a fuss, I just make a note
when listing sets as other sellers have done. I've also found "wrong" helmets
with classic space sets that are clearly original in my mind but again, no proof.

Luckily for my own personal collecting, I don't really mind or care

Heads are special: I believe the policy for heads had an “episode” the catalogue
hasn’t yet recovered from.

But wouldn’t it be nice to have “we have no proofs so the catalogue stays that
way for now but we strongly suspect you’re right and your set is 100% original”
answer?

It would, but in reality I think it would play out being based more on the credibility
of the poster and less on the situation, I think, which has its own flaws.

The heads is not your opinion, but a known issue. It is on the Catalog Roadmap,
Projects Under Consideration #6: https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2476

Once I get moved up to Catalog Associate with Marek, we will once again have
two Catalog "Admins" and be ready to start working on these projects again in
earnest.

Cheers,
Randy

sweet!

This goes to show the other reason I don't pipe up on these things; that
I haven't been here that long and I'm sure most of these things have
been talked about already

Hi Crystal!

Please, please, please bring up any issues that you may notice in old sets. You
restore them all the time and any information you have could be very useful.
An issue that you bring up may have never been noticed and lead to a much better
catalog for everyone. Also, if the issue has already been brought up and documented,
one more person mentioning it as an issue raises its priority level.

Cheers,
Randy

Good to know, I will not be shy about it in the future. I have about 400lbs of
backlog at the moment, mostly 70's and 80's vintage, so I'm sure
something will def pop up. Thanks again.

Regards,

Karl.

Awesome set that I had as a kid. I'm sure I still have a lot of the pieces
in my 'stash' and you've inspired me to have a go at restoring it.
Shame I don't have the baseplates.

I hope you have the TV style antenna, 6x5 Rocket picture brick, flag and lt.
grey 4x3 slope with logo, as these are more expensive than the plates! The flag
with stickers is near impossible to get.

Baseplates on Brick-Link at reasonable prices. I think $15 AUD each reasonable.
Beware of Expensive-Bay $30 each for very worn ones. Postage from Europe can
be a bit expensive because of the size of the base plates. So I try to order
lots of other parts to make it worthwhile. I've built 918,924,920,926 and
most of the small Classic Space sets from scratch. Karl.

I hear that Classic space is hard to find down under? I have a large stack of
those plates and they are pretty easy to find here between $5 and $30. I bet
if you found a seller with a bunch for sale (not me I'm hoarding mine), and
them import a bunch you could flip them for good money.
