Hi. I wanted to ask the Bricklink forum users for help with a few problems I
have been having using the Bricklink Studio application.

The first problem is that I haven’t been able to download the Studio 2.23.12_1
update. When I try to click on the “Update” button on the “New Studio Version
Available” pop-up, nothing happens, it just briefly goes lighter and then returns
to the same colour as before, with the pop-up staying. No matter how many times
I shut the application down and restart it to try again, it still hasn’t worked.

The second problem is that when I am building a model that has a lot of pieces,
it doesn’t take long before the fan on my Apple MacBook Air goes to full blast
and the laptop gets overheated. It won’t stop doing this unless I shutdown the
Studio application.

I have tried asking the brick link customer support operators, but they couldn’t
work out how to sort these problems. If anyone could help me finally solve what
to do with these problems, that would be really helpful. Some other information
that might help is: the current version of Studio (that I am stuck with) is Unity
Player version 2021.3.5f1 (40eb3a945986), my Apple MacBook Air’s current version
is macOS Monterey version 12.7.1 (21G920),(and I have updated my laptop several
times since trying to sort these problems, so even though I haven’t got round
to updating it to the latest version, I don’t think that would help) and I have
attached a screenshot of the update pop-up.

Thanks

The first that Bricklink Customer Support should have done, was to point to you
to the proper forum at https://forum.bricklink.com
There are hundreds of post and several threads about exactly these issues.

Absolutely! You can add notes to your listings to make them as "determined"
as you wish. Buyers can still search within notes for extra details, or they
can simply observe them as they browse listings.

Are notes searchable in any way? Because I don't know them to be. This is
kind of moot if you're asking for us to manually look through potentially
hundreds of shops.

Yes, they are searchable:

https://www.bricklink.com/searchAdvanced.asp?utm_content=subnav

No, they are NOT searchable by absence of a standard.
Since you are proposing to move structured catalog information into an unstructured
comments field you are in reality removing the practical ways to list and find
parts.

Russell, I am impressed by how much effort and motivation you put into this idea
and into the involvement with this thread, but am very disappointed that you
don't actually listen to what is being said by most of the most seasoned
forum contributors, which is: (1) Yes, how the site handles variants needs to
be tackled, but also (2) No, merging specific parts is not the way to go.
Please let the developers have a look at the technical suggestions made in this
thread before you degrade the catalog.

No no no!!!

Nobody should HAVE to know (and remember, this specific day) that "*"
will show every version: this is "Linux" spirit, people are more "Windows".

"3068" should bring the 99.997% market of 3068b.

Specific versions can be more difficult to find, as it's reserved to highly
specialized people who will have time to learn the special features.

Normal people don't have this time/energy: they work, have a family, etc.

AFOLs are the most often casual builders.
Site should be casual for them.

You misread what I said. Not having to know about variants but still having the
ability to choose to care and specify would make it easier for casual users -
if the user interface is properly designed and has the proper defaults. With
the '*' and '?' I refer more to the backend, allowing these kind
of expressions in the database table that contains the wanted list items.

What is his value though? The price guide for this one indicates what price buyers

It is a figure with low supply, but (at the current listed prices) even lower
demand.

There is one sales to be found at the torso level:

It seems that the other parts of the minifigure are low/normally priced only.

I can definitely see the advantage of getting rid of variants that are not really
important such as the interior type "connections between studs", sprue
marks and similar. Even the 7 vs 9 teeth, as they give the same functional angles.
However, the grooved vs no groove tiles are visually quite different from the
side. That difference really shows if you have more than one next to each other
and that is how they are often used when building. Same thing with smooth slopes.
Do they just get put into the regular slopes now, as again there is a clear visual
difference between the two and again slopes tend to get placed next to each other
when building. Whereas differences inside the parts tend not to get noticed anywhere
near as much as the exterior surface differences. Even the 7 vs 9 tooth hinge
differences tend not to show when looking at a build.

I also worry about vintage vs new/reissue torsos where the same print has been
used where there are large price differences, even if sellers can highlight they
have the original in the text.

Note that the "connections between studs" is not the functional difference,
it is just the most easily recognizable feature. The real difference is in the
angle of the slope and whether the hollow studs accept a bar connection.

The visual difference of the angle has not been enough for Bricklink to distinguish
a variant (see the 3x1 slope, which is not yet split), the functional difference
of the connectivity was.

I would love to have a catalog as detailed as possible (e.g. the bottom pin form
of a regular 1 x 2 plate, either filled or with a hole), while at the same time
have this level of detail optional for e.g. new users or user who don't care
about it.

Something like a "main item" (e.g. the current "undetermined type"
that, when you add it to a wanted list, is considered to be the same as all "sub
items". So they should be linked somehow. Like "add the undetermined
type" can be any of the "sub items" when you use the wanted list
for buying, or when you want a specific sub type, you just add the sub type to
your wanted list.

Just dreaming

Exactly, that is how it should be done.

Catalog = as detailed as possible
Items for sale = as detailed as you as a seller are willing to sort
Wanted items = as specific as you need the parts to be

All this needs is an extension of how you can specify parts in your store inventory
(how about a * or ? for starters) and an extension of how you can specify parts
in your wanted list. No need to touch the catalog at all.

As a database engineer, this is the worst idea ever. To dumb down your core database
rather than solving it on the usage side.

As suggested many times before, why don't you allow sellers to indicate which
variants may have been mixed in a lot and allow buyers to specify which variants
they care about.

In Catalog, Admin_Russell writes:
  Hello everyone,

As a platform, we have decided to take a hard look at some of the mold variants
that we are currently asking you to recognize. For sellers, more variants means
extra sorting and extra work while pulling orders, plus the issues that arise
from variant misunderstandings.

For buyers, excess variants mean that it's harder to assemble a wanted list,
find stores, and ultimately obtain the parts you are looking for.

I have put together a quick Help page to outline these proposed changes:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2625

Notice the date on this is coming up quickly (Feb 1), so I'm not giving a
lot of time for discussion. I'm aiming for about 1 week of discussion and
then we'll give sellers 2 weeks to adjust the descriptions on affected items
if they wish to retain the distinctions.

I plan to construct a full FAQ page with answers to all your questions. This
will serve to inform users about what was done here in February 2024, and also
help point the catalog in the right direction in the future.

To get started, I'll list a few here:

1. This sounds like you're dumbing down the BrickLink catalog to make
it easier for new users. Is that what is going on?

Not really. There are many, many other variants we expect people to sort and
care about. These ones don't really seem to matter much, and some of them
(e.g., the minifigure heads) actually cause problems for the catalog that cannot
be corrected otherwise.

2. What if I really care about a certain variant that is going away? Can I
still buy and sell that variant?

Absolutely! You can add notes to your listings to make them as "determined"
as you wish. Buyers can still search within notes for extra details, or they
can simply observe them as they browse listings.

3. How do I know which exact variants will be merged? I only see one example
in each category.

Please ask in this thread and I can be very specific. Usually we are talking
about a handful of parts and the printed versions.

4. Has a merge like this ever been done before?

Yes, there was a precedent - the Headlight Brick with Slot:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1016584

It was marked for deletion a few years ago and was finally merged last August.

5. Are these the only parts up for consideration, or are there other variants
that will be merged as well?

This is all for now. Based on how well this goes, we may elect to remove other
entries later. However, we will keep all functional variants and important cosmetic
variants.

Did you pay through PayPal OnSite or through another flavour of PayPal? If the
latter, the seller may not have been able to properly receive your payment.

Also look at the order details and both your Bricklink and e-mail messages, including
the spam box; it is possible that you may have missed a message or that it has
been automatically flagged as spam.

I have around 430 drawers like this for 600,000+ parts.

That looks quite like my storage solution. One tip: glue some cut pieces of baseplate
to the front of the drawer, so you can put example bricks that visually show

The price guide in BrickStore is now in a SQLite file. In the past I would would
gather all of the txt files and accumulate them into one price guide file to
assist in determining my item prices.

Doing limited research I have been able to open the SQLite file but cannot access
the price guide data. Does anyone have suggestions on what to use to export
the data from the SQLite file?

From my research there appear to be many options but I can't find the "SQLite
for Dummies" version of how to do export the data.

Thank you,
Cob

Assuming you want the data in Excel, instead of looking for 'export'
you should look to access and use the data directly. For this you need a way
to connect Excel's query engine to SQLite files, which can be done through
the ODBC driver for SQLite files. There are several of these available on the
web. After having installed this driver, you can use all features of Excel's
Power Query functions, same like you would import the CSV or text files.

ChatGPT gives the following instruction outline:

Microsoft Excel does not have native support for connecting directly to SQLite
databases. However, you can use third-party tools or methods to achieve this
connection. Here's a general approach:

ODBC Driver for SQLite:
You can use an ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) driver to connect Excel
to SQLite. SQLite provides an ODBC driver that you can install and configure
on your system.

SQLite ODBC Driver Installation:
Download and install an SQLite ODBC driver compatible with your operating
system.
Configure the ODBC driver to connect to your SQLite database. This usually
involves specifying the database file path, authentication details, etc.

Excel Data Connection:
Open Excel and go to the "Data" tab.
Select "Get Data" or "Get External Data," depending on
your Excel version.
Choose "From Other Sources" and then select "ODBC."
In the ODBC dialog, choose the DSN (Data Source Name) configured for
your SQLite database.

Querying Data:
After establishing the connection, you can use Excel's Power Query
Editor to write SQL queries or load tables from the SQLite database.
Power Query can be accessed through the "Data" tab, and you can
use the "Advanced Editor" to write custom SQL queries if needed.

Welcome to Bricklink! You'll definitely be able to find those parts on this
platform, where thousands of independent sellers sell loose parts like these.

You could have searched for '911' in the search box at the top, and you'd
have ended up at:

Set No: 911 Name: Universal Building Set
*
911-1 (Inv) Universal Building Set
369 Parts, 4 Minifigures, 1976
Sets: Universal Building Set: Basic Set

Click on the (Inv) link to see the whole inventory of this set. This set contains
several crane accessoiries; have your pick. Add the parts you need to a wanted
list and find one or more sellers that has them.

Please read the help pages so you'll don't get lost. Bricklink is huge
and a great resource, but can also be confusing at first.

Lately however, I noticed there are discrepancies between the two systems. I
was under the impression these were from the same source, but apparently not.
Anyone has info on this issue?

Thank You

They are not from the same source.

Inventories on Rebrickable are taken directly from LEGO, which means they contain
the inventory as reported by LEGO, which may not be the same as was actually
shipped out and which does not cater for all variants that Bricklink distinguishes
(but may distinguish variants that are considered as the same on Bricklink).

Inventories on Bricklink are (nowadays) pre-filled from the same source of LEGO,
but are always manually checked and verified against what was actually packed.
The Bricklink inventories are also amended by distinguishing variants, counting
the extras (like most small parts), alternates (like different variants) and
counterparts (like stickers applied on parts, or wheel-tire assemblies).

Also, please keep in mind that although LEGO's part numbers (design ids)
are used on multiple platforms, the numbering of variants and decorated parts
may differ from platform to platform.

a 12,17 handling fee on the invoice what i did not expect. Yes it was mentioned
in the terms -3% handling fee- but I did not notice it, I am a very frequent
buyer but never have seen such a practice before.

I regard it fair when someone adds external costs such as paypal charges and
packing costs. But this is simply a raise of the price. In my view orderpicking
costs simply should be included in the product price. And charging over 12 Euro
(the handling was also calculated over the postagen costs) for 'picking'
two sets looks as bit adsurd to me.

Maybe I am wrong...the same set was offered from two anothe Dutch dealers for
200 euro
as well. But a surcharge of 3% on the price makes the pricelist less transparant
as well.

Voor de Nederlandse markt is deze vorm van prijsopslag volgens mij niet toegestaan:

The catalog download page is here: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogDownload.asp

You can download a list of all parts, or you can download the inventory of a
single set, but there is no way to classify these parts as 'used in technic
sets' directly.

Is there a way to find out a part's naming history. For example, part 6091
used to be a brick modified before it was changed to a slope curved.

Thanks,

There are catalog change logs at [Market] [Catalog] [Logs]

For your question, you can find out at:

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogReqList.asp?nID=&viewDate=Y&viewType=E&viewStatus=A&itemType=P&viewAction=N&q=20952

but there are no name changes for this part at all.

When we like a box, with brick lik we see which pieces we need, we remove the

I would store everything we have available and just press a button to get what

The same goes for e-mail addresses and the base part of url (websites): they
are case insensitive by definition.

Can it be that you already have 2 in your cart? The dropdown will allow you to
scroll to 77 regardless of what is already in your cart, but if you are already
buying 2, you can only add 75 more to your cart.

Thousands of the 2x4 and 2x6 bricks were brought onto the Bricklink market as
leftovers from the Allianz model build. No boxes involved. Just sold as Milky
White with a comment "Milky White Brick 2 x 4 These bricks were specially
made for the Allianz Arena in Legoland Germany. They shimmer with tiny glitter-like
particles. RARE!" (14-08-2016, bought from a German store that is well known

I made a similar purchase in 2021 from a different reputed store but at that

This has been around for several years already. It has been brought up in the

In a Facebook post, several buyers were talking about how they will often make
a cart in several stores, then compare and go with the one that's the best
value. Great, smart move.

BUT - when you put items in your cart, does that temporarily remove them from
the store's inventory, so they'll still be there when you checkout? If
you wait too long, might those items be snatched up by someone else?

Like others said: carts don't affect inventory. Parts are not reserved.

I'm just wondering, because sometimes when I'm pulling an order (like
yesterday) I see that the order says this person bought 20 of this thing and
I should have 0 left... but I have 22 left. I know that everyone miscounts sometimes,
but by 22??? Is it possible that maybe those 22 were sitting in carts that were
waiting for checkout?

No, you are misinterpreting the information that Bricklink gives you. The order
gives you the amount left at the time of viewing/printing/downloading the order,
not the amount left at the time the order was placed. This means that if two
different customers order from the same lot, the amount reported back at the
time you look will be the amount left after both of the orders have been fulfilled.
Not that one order reflects the intermediate number.

For example: you have 50. Ali orders 20 (so at that time there are 30 left) and
Bob orders 7 (so at that time there are 50-20-7 = 23 left). If you print Ali's
order after Bob's order was placed, Bricklink will report 23 left. If you
would have printed Ali's order before Bob's order was placed, Bricklink
will report 30 left.

As a seller, you are responsible. You can claim damage with your shipping provider.
Whether or not this claim will cover your losses, depends on what shipping conditions
you have chosen with your carrier. It is part of the costs of doing online business.

It would help if your buyer would provide photo evidence - or even better, that
he would have refused the damaged package. But unless you can prove that it is
deliberate fraud on the buyer's side, the entire transaction upto complete
delivery into the hands of your customer is completely at your risk.

So I believe it all comes down to what we expect users to search for. I would

I, me, and myself would search for the plural when there’s more than one.  And
then we would replace the final s by a * if we couldn’t find the part.

So, that’s 3 of us against 1 of you for the plural

Make that 4. Plurals please where they apply.

If only it were as simple for the sheep, deer, moose, trout, fish, aircraft and

basically compares the value of pieces from a pick-a-brick wall to Bricklink.

I was originally going to use Bricklink's API to get data like part ID, weight,
dimensions average sold price, etc. However, I was told by the Bricklink support
team that they only offer the API to Bricklink sellers for use in their Bricklink
stores.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a way where I can get data like this from
somewhere else? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You could install Studio (red Studio Icon on the Bricklink pages), run it. Studio
will fetch availability and average for sale prices per part per color and caches
these in around 10,000 JSON-files, one for each part and each containing information
for all available colors. It will refresh the cache around once a day, when you
are using Studio.
This cache should cover most of the parts that are available from PaB.

  I'm asking physically. Here's where I am:

My house is small so I can online get so many Akro-Mils into my garage. I've
got twelve and having trouble fitting in any more. My parents offered their basement
which is far larger than my house; in the open corner alone I might be able to
get thirty-six to forty-eight. Plenty of space to upscale to many times that
if they allow it. I may be able to start carrying many hundreds of thousands
of elements.

My parents also offered their labor because they're Door Dashing to make
ends meet and I want to help them out by splitting profit for their effort filling
orders during the week while I stock, fund, supply, and manage everything else.

Is this taxing on the body? My parents are aging and I wouldn't be helping
them out if they're having to strain to get orders filled. For me in my garage,
standing for hours can be painful so I'm afraid it'll put them through
hell.

I care about my parents. I put them through a lot growing up and I want to improve
their situation any way I can. They at the very least seem receptive to a BL
store.

Every time I read a story here about Akro-Mils or similar systems of 'many
tiny drawers', I think: Why? Meaning, why to have a separate drawer for each
part spread out vertically, when you can also use wider drawers that can each
hold 20 to 60 cups / bags / open boxes? If you group similar but not easily confused
parts together in a drawer, you can do many sorting operations by taking out
just a few drawers at a time and can do most work sitting. In my setup I can
easily fit 4.000 lots in a few meter cupboard space.

For bigger lots, they get split over the small lot in the drawer box and the
remainder in a ZIP bag into the 40 liter containers.

What kind of cupboards are those?

These are custom made, by 'just' gluing some wooden strips on plywood
and screwing some L-profiles for the drawers to slide onto. For the paper boxes,
you could use the bottom of tetrapack packages, empty matchboxes or fold them
out of paper like the ones on the picture.
For the drawers, you might also get a pile of serving trays from a budget store.

My post is more about the idea that you do not have a single drawer for a single
part, but larger drawers that show all the parts in a single view. Also, loose
boxes makes it very easy to get the parts out. You don't have to handpick
every part but can just take the box.

Also note the cut up baseplate that I glued on the front. It allows for putting
just a few samples of the parts that are in the drawer and still be flexible.

Both for your wanted list and for your item for sale you can select any color,
even if that color is not a 'known color'.
The way it works is that the colors of a part will show as 'known' if
and only if the part-color combination is used in an inventory. Since you have
the part, you probably have the set where it came in, so maybe, just maybe, you
could contribute to the catalog by adding the inventory of the set.

Thanks in advance

It might be clutch strength measuring/testing tool that they use in the mould
making department. I vaguely remember something like this having come up on a
LEGO-site a while back.

Would it be possible to just quietly change the XRef?

on it.

Yes, thats why my question over here. Look everywhere at the internet, no known
prices

Could you add the inventory to Bricklink? At least that would give you the part
out value as a starting point.

"It said the reason for that was because extra steps were required in the
production process, which meant it needed to use more energy.

As a result, it said it has "decided not to progress" with making bricks
from the material."

I'm somewhat skeptical. If the new bricks would have caused more carbon emissions
because they require more energy to produce, then wouldn't that be less of
an issue if the energy used to create them was sourced from wind, solar, or nuclear?

If some of those extra steps are during brick production (moulding factories),
then tell me which of these countries are 100% “wind, solar, or nuclear”?
China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, USA, Vietnam.

My guess is (most of) the extra steps are during the making of the raw material.
So, second question: in which country should the PET be recycled to use 100%
wind, solar, or nuclear?
You have more choice here (lots of more bad choices ).

And then, how do you transport the to-be-recycled PET to this new recycling factory
and how do you transport the recycled pellets to the moulding factories?  Without
adding more CO²?
(PET transport should be as CO²-expensive as for ABS (unless the weight is highly
different), so that question should reduce to: Without adding more transport?)

Besides, even if you found a magical country that has 100% wind, solar, or nuclear,
and that could produce the PET (yeah, that small 2-huts island won’t do), neither
wind, solar, or nuclear are 0% CO²: you’re using energy that could be used for
something else, so you’re requiring more energy capacity, so you’re requiring
more wind turbine, solar panel, or nuclear plant to be built, and that’s never
CO²-free.

Good questions making a good read.

Let's make that CO² → CO₂ and I totally agree. Did you use up all your Unicode
credits with the œ explanation? The ₂ Unicode U+2082 is intended for the fractional
part of custom fractions, but since this forum strips the (sub)2(/sub) markers,
this will do. Let's not square the carbon monoxide but stick to carbon-dioxide
only - or actually, this is more about the entire picture of energy transformation
that's irrevocably lost to entropy.

On Maya for example you can swap beetween 4 views like this picture and still
work on your creation.
That's the mode what i'm looking for. Is there any one on brick studio
or only the 3D view?

The program is called Studio or Bricklink Studio, and it's forum is found
at https://forum.bricklink.com

The answer to your question is yes and is found on this help page: https://studiohelp.bricklink.com/hc/en-us/articles/5409213150487-Camera-control-in-the-viewport

Both forum and help pages can be found under the red Studio icon at the top of

If you use the “US International” layout, it’s AltGr + E

Or simpler, if you have US International keyboard layout, the ' " ` and
~ act as deadkeys: for é you just type ' followed by e. Works for all common
accented letters (common as in Western European languages). 'c is ç usually
(but not always).

Don’t get me started on ‘œ’

Please elaborate...

You have a source for this? Not saying it's not true but now I'm curious

I checked my set 6017 from 1987, one year after the initial release of these
flags and they already have the logo.
And as these flags in black only appeared from 1996 onward, it's safe to
assume those should have the logo.

It could also be a custom print on a genuine Lego part of course.

My source was just checking my collection. I have plenty of this flag in eleven

Thank you !

In one of your wanted list - and it does not have to be the current one! - there
is a duplicate entry. You have to find and fix that first before you can do any
edit on any of your wanted lists.

This duplicate entry may be caused by a catalog merge, so not necessarily something
you have done yourself.
