Members have recently identified two problems with these part variant entries:

1. The additional notes need to be updated.
2. Part 4623 comes in both 5 MM and 6 MM horizontal arm length versions.

A member has submitted a request for us to take action.

What changes will happen?
1. The title of Part 4623 currently in parentheses will be changed to
read "Undetermined Arm Length," but the part will not immediately be marked for
deletion.
2. A new catalog entry will be created with the part number 4623a and
the title "Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Arm Up (Horizontal Arm Length 6mm)."
3. Part 88072 has 4623b as an alternate item number. The primary number
(88072) and alternate item number (4623b) will be switched for this part.
4. The additional notes for all three entries will be updated for brevity
and ease of comprehension.

When will these changes occur?
All four changes are planned to occur between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM CST
on July 8th, 2020.

Why are these changes necessary?
The changes are necessary because Part 4623 comes in both 5 MM and 6 MM horizontal
arm lengths. The catalog does not currently recognize this fact and some inventories
include incorrect part variants.

How will these changes affect BrickLink members?
Sellers should move their for-sale listings from the undetermined entry to either
4623a or 4623b as soon as reasonably possible after the July 8th changes. Members
who object to one or more changes should immediately provide input with clear
reasons for their objections.

When comparing two Darth Vader figures I had, I discovered a mold variance between
two helmets. The "old" type came likey was made from 1999-2014, while The "new"
type appeared in the 2019 20th Anniversary Clone Scout Walker

I think
this new mold was created because in order to create the anniversary figure lego
wanted to use a 1 piece Vader helmet, as opposed to the 2 piece helmets they
switched to a couple of years ago. This mold variation deserves a note in the
catalog entry for the helmet,, or a variant added to the catalog, but I'm
not sure which. If someone wants to take the appropriate action from here, please
go ahead. See the attached image for the differences between the two.

You’re sure it isn’t a b (with hole)?

in the attached image. It works quite well for me, although we already know that
any classification is subjective, arbitrary and can be improved

Hello Soviet, yorbrick, SylvainLS, jeslego, Adjour, m.ws et.al.
Thank-you for your insight and advise. Everyone uses Lego for their own purposes.
Some enjoy playing with it. Some use it to express their creativity. Some use
it to generate cash. All uses are perfectly fine. I like to organize. If I
buy a set, I see that set as fun to assemble but it does not require any organizing.
There is only very limited "chaos" in a boxed set of LEGO. On the other hand,
when I purchase a pile of bricks on eBay, I'm not that interested in the
individual elements, but rather on the huge amount of "chaos" that those elements
represent. I'm not buying the elements, I'm buying the "chaos" that
I can then apply my passion to organizing to remove the "chaos" from the elements.
If my SIPs never get completed I don't really care. I'm not going to
be selling the complete SIP, It will just be stored away. My collection of completed
SIPs holds no more interest for me other than as a measure of how much "chaos"
I have taken great pleasure in removing from the "World of Lost LEGO Elements".
Generally, the expression goes, "The means to the end." In my case I would say
that" The Means is the End."
Reading and thinking about all the great comments that my original post has sparked
has caused me to want to change how I describe myself as a LEGO user. While
I always knew I am not a "Master Builder" I had thought I was a "Master Collector".
The BL community has helped me to realize that I am more properly an "Amateur
Organizer". To suggest that I an a "Master Organizer" would also suggest that
my method of organizing is in some way superior. It's not! it's just
the method that suits my particular "flavour of OCD."

Lastly, regarding the terminology I needed for my DB, with your excellent advise,
I have decided to go with this sequence:
CATEGORY :: PART :: ELEMENT :: PIECE

If anyone want to discuss further the structure of my DB or how I intend to use

NEVER find yourself with 300+ sets to restore all at once. I did this too.
It complicates the process unnecessarily. If you have a pile of 1000 parts that
contains 600 you need to finish 8 sets, you have a manageable problem. If you
have a pile of 100k parts that contains the 600 you need to finish 8 sets, you
have a long, long slog ahead of you.

You can not store all of the parts ever produced. Holding odd bits for the day
that they are needed is a bit like waiting for Godot.

Every set has one or two parts that are unusually expensive. If you can quickly
identify these and determine whether you have them, you will be able to decide
if it makes economic sense to spend even one minute restoring this version of
the set. Ditto for Minifigs.

Took the words out of my mouth. This is primarily what I do, and I don't
have 40 sets in progress, let alone 300. I usually finish one lot at a time.
If the set doesn't have the figs, I usually wont bother saving it depending
on what it is.

I try also to buy lots of similar themes, so I have easy spare parts without
having to have "everything that ever existed". I just need "most" of what was
produced 1980- 2000 in my case.

I guess none of that is helpful really to the OP's question. I personally
wouldn't bother trying to set up my situation to operate this way, I would
work on getting the number of sets I intend to sell in my possession waaay down.

I liked Sylvain's answer, but my perspective is a little different.

A very long time ago, I started doing what you are doing, with the intent of
creating a business for my kids. It pays okay, but not enough to support an
adult. It is something to do when there is nothing to do.

Defining the objects in a LEGO database can be done. But it will take lots of
time to populate and maintain. The data design time has already being expended
by other organizations. The structure of the Bricklink catalog may not be ideal,
but it is free.

As noted elsewhere in the thread, the mold numbers and even minor part variations
start to matter as set age to the point where they are bought for nostalgia or
collections. If this is your market, you will need a database that warns you
when to do more than just check the shape and color of the parts.

But if your market is making people happy by providing them with a fun building
experience that is less costly than what it would be to buy the sets new, than
there are some shortcuts you can take.

Everything you need to finish a set is available for sale. Hence the real question
becomes whether it is less expensive to look for it in your inventory or on line.

There is a core of basic LEGO parts. Sort those by shape. They will be the
bulk of what you have in your 100k inventory. Storage is naturally self sorting.
Bricks, plates, slopes, wings, arches, lift arms, small technic parts, etc.
This speeds the bulk of your searches.

NEVER find yourself with 300+ sets to restore all at once. I did this too.

parts to fit them in containers?
Then what you found out is that parts have attributes: general shape, size, colour,
and you “more or less” ordered them: shape first, then colour, then size.
Okay, that’s some sort of sieve system to define containers.
But why do you need to put that in you DB?

You have a list of parts of one side, your inventory, and lists of parts on the
other side, the wanted parts for the sets.
How will the database be used? You need to know first if the exact part (ID
+ colour) is in your inventory and, second, where it’s stored if it is.
Where do this categorization of yours is used in the DB?
Nowhere that I see.

Or do you want to have an algorithm that takes a BL part (ID + description +
colour) and turns out a container number?
But does it have to be in the DB? Not that I see.

So I don’t see a need to complicate your DB. You just need to have four main
tables: parts (BL id + description), colours, inventories (list of parts in a
given colour and in a given quantity), and containers (association between a
location and parts).

Besides, you’ll quickly find all “shapes” don’t divise regularly (or at all)
into “colours” or “sizes” (most of the heads are yellow; slopes first divise
by angle, not size; Technic connectors don’t come in many colours nor sizes; etc.).
Especially if you use BL categories as “shapes.”

On this note, here’s a rough categorization that some sellers (who sort many
parts) use as a first sieve:
  Bricks & Arches
  Brick Modified & Round
  Plate
  Plate Modified & Round
  Slope
  Technic
  Tile & Panel
  Minifig
  Other
They are about the same size in a “standard” collection. This might help you
devise your containers’ organization.

Hello SylvainLS, thank-you for the very useful information. You raise some very
good points. in my initial message I did not describe the structure of the DB
I am building because it was un-necessary to the information I was seeking and
would have taken far to many keystrokes and doubtlessly many readers wouldn't
have cared less and some would have been confused regardless. However, since
you raised the issue, I'll try to be brief.
My SIPs are managed adequately by BL using the WANTED LISTS. While I may in
the future move that info into the DB, currently the DB is just for my unassigned
pieces. My plan is to assign each of my existing containers into the `Containers`
table. There will also be a `Colours` and a `Categories` table. The Containers
table will be linked to the Colours and Categories tables. Some containers will
have only one colour and one category, but as you point out some. container will
colour and category lines, such as the container for my "larger-ish" TRANSparent
pieces.
My next table will, as you suggest, be for PARTS linking part descriptions to
category descriptions. The last table will be, likely called ELEMENTS will link
PARTS to COLOURS and to a particular container and will list a ELEMENT count
for the for that container. Were I to have many Blue 2x4 bricks that I required
a second container, the ELEMENTS table would have two or more entries (a one
to many relationship).
Once all set up, my PLAN FOR USE is to use the BL WANTED LISTS to identify missing
SIP elements then to query my DB to identify which one or more of my containers
hold those elements. Update both DBs then move on to the next missing Element.
If I don't have the missing element then I can use BL to purchase it. Right
now, I don't want to purchase anything from BL because I'm not 100% certain
I don't already have it somewhere.
Like I said, thank-you for your excellent and helpful information on sorting,
storing and managing my collection.

To answer your question, Category Element Part seems correct, but I think
that Part is already a Piece, by your nomenclature. I guess the proper BrickLink
way would be Category Item (for a certain item) and then maybe Piece for an
Item in specific color. Maybe you should also introduce "Mold" into the database,
because--as you probably know--some of the old items used to look quite
different.

But my most important point is: if you're adding all your pieces to a database,
why not add them to BrickLink inventory? Even better, you can try Rebrickable,
which will give you a lot of interesting options when looking into completing
sets.

Soviet, thank-you for the information and assistance. I will be sending you
a personal message with a picture of my SIPs and my many containers of unassigned
pieces.
The issue of mould differences and older pieces general is a concern. I try
to keep my SIPs period correct. I have separate containers for older pieces
where the PIP marks are on the side rather than in the middle of one of the studs
as is the case I do use BL to manage my SIPS. Currently I have 358 Wanted Lists,
one per SIP. I had considered using BL's Inventory feature to manage my
unassigned pieces, however, that is only available to Sellers members, not to
Buyers. Therefore, I'm using this project as a learning opportunity to develop
a DB with a web interface. Programming is my other passion.

It is the other way around. A 1x1 brick is a part. A 1x1 brick in blue is an
element. A single piece in your hand can be called piece or part or element,
whatever you want really.

sets were available direct from LEGO so about as close to a retirement date as
you can get.

For future retirements, there are only guesses.

As far as I know they are not assemblies because they came separate in the sets.
I have separated hundreds/thousands without causing any damage.

I believe that assemblies are not only made for pre-assembled parts in sets.
Example:

2878c02 (Inv) Train Wheel RC, Holder with 2 Black Train Wheel RC Train and Chrome Silver Train Wheel RC Train, Metal Axle (2878 / 57878 / x1687)
Parts: Wheel

This part is even easier to disassemble than the hinges, and have no risk of
inducing stress marks.

It doesn't appear to cause any problems to change instructions to
sets, so for existing instructions this is probably what will occur - except
possibly in cases where there are large numbers of items for sale.

Agreed - and I definitely don't want to miss the opportunity to catalog them
still attached like this - as I'll wager there's not many of these left
still intact like this (aside from the few and far between sealed sets for this
set).

This definitely ranks at the top for one of the rarest discoveries I've had
in a used pile. That and a 10123 set with all the factory bags still sealed

Could an additional known colour of red be added? The Torso assembly would be
red torso, red arms, red hands.

Imo we shouldnt, because this is actually a misplaced sticker so its more or
less a custom item. If you gonna add that to the catalog, you would have to
add every misplaced sticker, and since you can place stickers everywhere there
will be no end...

The part you mention is sold by one store, and thats his picture too I believe.

btw There is a picture of the white version, but its the torso assembly

It would be a lot of work making pictures aspecially with all the baseplates
with white dots and I certainly do not have them all.

On the attached picture is a example from set 648-1. On the right the original
one from the 70's and on the left a newer one.

It's true though we have similar looking undersides like this with sharp
edges around the hole and more curved ones.

I have the suspision they cut smaller baseplates from bigger ones. at least I
have seen plenty of edges that look cut. But this might be a custom job from
the people we bought it from.

They are cut of a larger in factory, cut to the size that was needed.
That is why older baseplates may have the whiter looking stressmarks.
I always mention this in my description so buyers know what they buy.

I can't do this. IMHO, a decision about the future road of these two parts
(and any new parts needed to be made) must be made by admin, and I expect them
to make the necessary changes to the catalog. I have seen no traces of any final
decision made yet.

Honestly, I'm tempted to merge them. There is little reason for this part
to be split over an excessively confusing difference that requires no less than
three comparison images.

And, of course, a fairly snarky additional note that is clearly the result of
frustration over sellers just not getting the difference (and blaming them for
the problem that BrickLink created).

I strongly object to this resolution. As SylvainLS points out, they are functionally
different, and IMHO they are not interchangable, and both as a buyer or seller,
I would care about the variant (as I do today).

I think a better resolution would be to rename part 88072 to 4623b (and keep
part number 88072 secondary), then make 4623 "undetermined arm length" and create
a new part 4623a for the 6 mm variant.

So where do we go from here? Could the note for the two parts be updated? They
(and some of the inventories containing the 6mm part) are clearly wrong now.

More than ever minifigures need the correct numbering as that is the only link
to the theme within XP.

I think it goes without saying that I would never want to see Galaxy Squad humans
separated from Galaxy Sqaud Aliens so whatever happens they’d need to be grouped
together for sure be that under ‘gs’ or ‘sp’

Where it gets more difficult is with things like skeletons but as a general rule
I’d say plain skeletons remain under ’gen’ but if they are associated with a
pirate theme and wear pirate hat then they should probably be a ‘pi’ code whereas
if they came from a castle theme wearing armour or knight helmet then they should
be a ‘cas’ code but obviously a plain skeleton from a castle set should still
be ‘gen’ but what about this one: cas328 with the red eyes I’m not so sure ’cas’
or ‘gen’?

These codes seem to be placed correctly cas329, cas378

whereas many such as gen009, gen011, gen021, gen037, gen135, gen036 perhaps need
moving?

Then you have oddities like gen027 and gen147 that look almost the same but would
seem strange to separate under ‘hol’ and ‘twn’ so ‘gen’ would seem like the only
suitable option for these?

All in all its a bit of a nightmre to try and organise for the best

Yes I can see it’s definitely a challenge especially since many minifg codes
have become well established with people even though they may not make too much
sense structure wise!

I guess the reason I asked was mainly because I could see some Ideas codes had
been changed to Ghostbuster codes whilst Dimensions Ghostbuster minifgs and the
Ideas Pirate minifigs hadn’t been altered in the same way?

Either way I guess there would need to be a rule of thumb on want constitutes
a minifig range being given its own theme code abbreviation. For instance do
you start giving the ghostbuster minifigs the ‘gb’ code when there are at least
8 minifigs in the range for example?

On the other hand if there are only 2 or 3 ghostbusters minifigs do they perhaps
always just start off with a miscellaneous code which might also include everything
from Santa to ET?

Do we also start to catalog things not necessarily by Legos themes but by what
the community itself classes as the best match for Space, Castle, Pirates etc...
with anything that does'nt fit among the established themes classed as miscellaneous?

For instance do you envisage that stuff like Galaxy Squad might come under space
‘sp’? instead of ‘gs’?

As a huge minifigure collector who categorizes their entire collection by the
BrickLink item numbers, I would not be in favor of any renumbering of huge swaths
of the BrickLink catalog as it stands. Small sections, okay, but not lumping
Galaxy Squad into the Classic Space figures, etc. I think having minifigures
classified according to the themes they occur in is how they should be classified
for now, and the catalog manages to currently do that relatively okay for the
majority of the minifigures.

But, once again, this gets back to the database design. We are stuck in a system
that only categorizes things in a flat manner, so moving large amounts of items
around, renumbering large amounts of items, etc., would cause a nightmare for
anyone and everyone involved.

Having a system that allowed tags on items would allow minifigures to be categorized
in more than one way and then all figures could just be given sequential codes
starting from figure000001 all the way up to however many figures there
are and then into the future. So figure009866 might be classified as "Space",
"Galaxy Squad", and "Alien", whereas figure013022 might be classified
as "Licensed", "Space", "Star Wars", and "Alien". No more thinking about how
to structure item numbers, no more worrying about what *specific* category a
minifigure should go in, no more having users even think about numbering since
the system could just assign the next figure number automatically! This is really
where the whole system needs to get to.

To be honest I don’t have too much concern about stuff like Galaxy Squad remaining
‘gs’ and was more interested in other people’s opinions of where we think it
might go though I would just say that if the system remained as it is we could
potentially run out of abbreviations if we continue to use them on every sub-theme
like this but I guess I have bigger issue with the minifigs from both the ‘dim’
and ‘idea’ categories taking precedence over existing categories which are better
suited for them because to me it’s a bit like categorising a Star Wars minifig
from an advent calendar as ‘adv’ or from polybag as ‘pol’ when it should still
be ‘sw’?

On the same token if it goes the way your suggesting then I guess that would
blow everything out the water all together and whilst it could work the only
real issue I would have is with the length of the codes which would also take
away the ability to memorize them for instance without even looking I know that
sw0707 is Yoda and are we going to have more instances where we end up forgetting
which minifig code we came to pick once at the storage location?

As the current system shows a small abbreviation of letters + number combos allows
for codes to be shorter and more memorable

Hey!

I am busy putting duplo into my inventory and ran into this little airplane.

It is not in a condition i want to sell it in, so i looked if it could be demolished
to smaller parts. In my idea it contains some wheels i cannot find in the catalog
and wheel pins number 2344. Can it be parted out?
