Interesting. Why can printed versions of parts even have different categories
than their parent part? Is there even a case where that is needed? I can think
of one case: 2 x 2 x 2 Slopes with dress prints could go under Minifig,Bodypart
(or better: change the "legs assembly" category in "lower body" and move all
short legs, mermaid tails and ghost lower bodies there too). But even in this
case, those parts are simply "slope".
So if printed parts never even have a different category than their parent part,
why is it apparently needed that these parts are assigned a category manually?
It's just extra work and extra risk of error. In my own webshop's catalog,
the data of the non printed parent part is used as much as possible. That saved
me a whole lot of work.

The BL database does not 'know' about parent parts. This is something
that we as users understand by trimming the part number, but in the underlying
database, there is no such relation between P=3626cpb2423 and P=3626c. For the
database engine, these are just two unrelated records that happen to be near
each other in alphabetical order. Therefore, the category field is to be filled
separately with every item.
There is a relation in the database that relates P=3626c to P=3626a and P=3626b,
but that is not the relation you seek right now.
With the current database, this functionality of automatically linking categories
to the category of the parent part, is (a little) harder to build. However, it
would have unintended consequences: A quick selection in Excel learns that of
the 40K decorated part, 11K have the same category as their 'parent'
part, 24K have not, and 5K have no parent part defined in the database. This
is mostly because there is a separate category for decorated, but there are more
examples.

There are lots of reasons why something isn’t automatized. The main ones are:
1. You have to realize it’s stupid work.
2. “You can automatize that?!” The users don’t even know they can ask for it
to be done.
3. And, of course, “there’s something else more urgent to do.”
You thought about it because you’re lazy (in a good way ) and you needed to
do the job yourself.
|
You're probably right, a lot if this may have to do with the fact that catalog
work is unpaid work for Bricklink. Why waste time on making something that's
free less work?

This is why goatleg exists - the flatness of the Bricklink catalog makes it difficult
to find decorated parts because they are all thrown into one jumbled category
at the same level as undecorated parts. If the Bricklink catalog were arranged
with true categories and subcategories that move from the general to the specific,
then decorated parts would be subcategories of their undecorated versions and
would be much easier to find.

Hi
As you know there are 2 versions.
It would be fine if the first release parts are in the inventory, other parts
in the alternate section.

https://www.lego.com/biassets/bi/4586971.pdf
There are a lot of differences between the 1ste and 2nd release. Maybe put all
parts used for the 2nd but not for the 1st in the MID '99'. (as there
are already parts in for the MID 99 in this set)

The information comes from the opening of a "mint-in-box" unopened set (Samsonite). I opened the set to verify the pieces. I also have info on what "lego logo's" are on the studs, to ensure era-specific correctness if interested.
|
It's great to get info from unopened sets and that people take their time
to correct old inventory lists. Still, there is a problem. This new inventory
means that the old inventory was crap. I don't think it was. Is it dead certain
that the sets released in for example Europe contained exactly the same parts
as the Samsonite versions? I think that the parts 3009 and 3023 should have remained
as alternate parts. Also, what about the sellers of set 329 having painstakingly
collected the parts in order to sell this set? Now, they need to start the process
all over again. The BL method of inventory list making should allow some variations
which are highly probable.

| Hi All,
Maybe a stupid question, but why is the order details on the site the weight
of all items (so Lot weight x items ordered) and if you download it, the weight
of 1 unique lot.
Second, is it possible to have the total estimated weight per order on the Download,
like it's shown online in the order?
This because I like to see/calculate the average price/kg and the average price/piece
for my orders.

You remember correctly but the roof 4509 coming with sets 7755 and 7727 in 1983
had part number since its earliest production.
Some old baseplates from 60s or 70s had also part number.

The one or two digit numbers indicate molds and mold cavities in the actual machine
that creates the parts from liquid plastic injection. As far as what year TLC
started putting part numbers on the parts themselves, I'm afraid I do not

My set actually contains the old style (B) treasure chest with no back slots and thin hinge. Confirmed by actual inventory and product photos on box/instructions. (Are there alternate versions?)
|
Hi,
I am very sure that this set came with the "a" variant for two reasons:
1. Set 6273 was produced between 1991 and 1993. Set 6260 was produced between
1989 and 1991 and that set already had the "a" variant (link below).
2. A few years ago, the user 1977_mauro changed the inventory of 6273 and many
other old sets based on sealed set contents (he added extra parts or string lenghts,
for example). As we can see, he has not changed the treasure chest in the inventory
of set 6273 but he has changed it in other inventories. I am sure he would have
also changed it here if he had found the "b" type in his copy.
All in all, the "a" type should stay here but the "b" type can be added as an
alternate if you confirm that you have found it in a sealed set.
Regards,
Jonas

Hello,
thank you very much for your reply. This is very interesting!
I own the entire collection for Pirates I up until 1991 and I got them right
when they came out (all new from sealed boxes). All treasure chests are there
and none of them is the A-type, all are the old B-Type (including set 6260 from
1989).
The picture on the box also shows the B-type (see attachment).
So I guess there really must be alternates for all of these sets.
Kind regards

I had an issue with this set recently. Many of the bricks were brittle, thought
it was brown instead.
Brittle blue is usually from much older sets, but I think something weird happened
with that set.

The one or two digit numbers indicate molds and mold cavities in the actual machine

I don't know of any part that comes in more than one copper color; without

I have checked many sets. It appears that the turnable 3404c02 was first produced
sometime between 1974-75 and then, it was replaced by 3403c01 in 1976.

It is discolored from age. I think someone calls it "brittle blue". I have
seen this in my inventory, brand new blue bricks turned yellowish, inside and
out. I donate them to schools. Sometimes these blue parts will crack easily,
especially minifig torsos. It's not all blue parts, so some blue parts are
made with a different recipe?
Someone else talked recently that he opened a MIB set from the '90s had a
lot of blue pieces discolored.
It's a known issue, but I'm not sure if anyone knows why.

The hinge brick is definitely blue - it only comes in one shade of blue (if I've
selcted the right product from the catalogue), so that's got to be it. The
1x3 brick just looks like dark blue to me.
TBF the blue hing brick does look darker than normal blue, but that could be
due to bad light, camera etc.
Do you have any normal blue or dark blue bricks to compare these to?

| Ah, I didn't read properly Yes, that should already cause a whole lot
less burden.
Good thing that at least the link to the part out value result page is directly
accessible and editable without having to go through the "get value" button.
That way, at least some of us that have some programming or perhaps Excel or
other skills are able to save a bunch of clicks. Seller tools aren't coming
to it seems we all have to make our own But yes, I think I agree this would
be a good feature.

I'm not an expert but I think this would be too heavy for the website. Even
asking 1 part out value the system needs to process all priceguide data of all
parts in that set. If a totally random user would be browsing through 10 sets,
that whole process has to happen 10 times. It's only useful for sellers and
only at those moments that they want to purchase something, so I think it would
be an overkill of constant processing on the server for a small advantage.

The information comes from the opening of a "mint-in-box" unopened set (Samsonite). I opened the set to verify the pieces. I also have info on what "lego logo's" are on the studs, to ensure era-specific correctness if interested.

The only color that I could see a chance of getting added would be something
akin to "Metallic Gold" or "Metallic Silver" to separate surface-coated copper
parts from copper-color molded parts. Beyond that, it would be highly unlikely
to get any consensus to make further changes.

Wow. 🤯 Why??
Is there an actual reason for this (e.g. parts that overlap between LEGO’s colours,
natural colour-variations that make identification difficult, etc), or is it
just the product of inertia?
|
When parts are released in a color that is not (yet) included in the Bricklink
catalog, there are two options:
- Add the new color,
- Group the color with an existing color
For all copper colors (both plastic colors and surface coatings), the second
option was chosen even though the appearance of the part can be very different.
This is supposed to make it easier for buyers and sellers. Many sellers will
not be able to accurately identify these colors because they are not used often
enough. These 7 colors were used for less than 50 parts in our catalog.
I have discussed copper with Admins in the past, I think it is time for an update

XML is not a file type, it just refers to a way to structure data in plain text.
It only means that item data is placed in between tags with pointy brackets.
A file in XML formatting can have any kind of extension: txt, xls, html, ...
If you need another extension, you can just rename the file. If that doesn't
work, then probably you need something else than an XML formatted file. What
do you need it for?

Thank you.

Ah yes. I've written my own converter for this. But you can use Brickstock:
Brickstock can read Bricklink xml formatted files, and save them as bsx. That
bsx file should be fit for upload on BrickOwl.

Correct.
BrickLink's copper combines several different copper-like colors.
It combines LEGO colors 139 Copper, 189 Reddish Gold, 176 Red Flip/Flop (for
Bionicle mask 32573 and 32572), 178 Yellow Flip/Flop (for Bionicle Kanohi mask),
346 Copper Metallic, 300 Copper, Drum Lacquered matte copper surface coating,
334 Copper ink (another surface coating).

the only one that is even close is copper. I'm sure it's just a different

When I said "over time", I meant that LEGO periodically changes their colours
slightly, not that the part has discoloured. (One example of colour-change-over-time
is Pearl Gold, with older elements tending to be lighter and newer ones tending
to be darker - But all variations still considered "Pearl Gold").
This part is Copper, but 2001 Copper is darker than 2019 (or 2006) Copper.

|

Jonas
