I was bored. That's how I found myself here. But I don't know how to
find the set that still needs correcting. When I search, I get all the sets
that have that piece within the combined piece.

  Hello,

Does anyone know what colour is the sword in the middle? I was sold to me as
metallic gold but looks different from my own mg which is the left one (right
one is copper). Or is it just a color variation?

Thanks,
Alexandre

Metallic Gold is a BrickLink color referring to a plain part (usually made in
Tan) that has had a coating applied to it. The coating is only applied to ABS
parts, and these swords were not made with ABS. My guess is that they were made
from polyethylene. Therefore, the first thing to realize is that none of them
are Metallic Gold.

The center one is definitely LEGO color Warm Gold, which is Pearl Gold on BrickLink.
The left one looks too light to me to be BrickLink's Flat Dark Gold (LEGO's
Metallic Sand Yellow), so it is probably just a Pearl Gold variation.

Cheers,
Randy

Thank you for your reply.

However it makes me even more confused. The sword on the left is exactly (and
I mean, exactly) the same color as the viking helmet which is said to be metallic
gold. How can it be another color then? That sword in mg appears in several sets
according to the BL catalog and very different from the one in the middle (the
texture is different, more "solid", don't know how to say it).
Also, I compared all these swords with pearl gold parts and if I remember well,
the colors did not match.

Thanks,
Alexandre

Here is an image of parts in BrickLink Metallic Gold:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/15218053575/

Notice that none of them are molded from gold-colored plastic. They have a gold
paint applied to them through a drum lacquering process. On a flexible part like
the swords in question, the painted coating would flake off upon bending the
part. That is why this process (and in effect BrickLink color) is not used on
flexible parts.

Now, here is an image of parts in BrickLink Pearl Gold:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/15211982695/

Notice that all of these parts are molded from gold-colored plastic.

It is very easy to tell which is which due to the texture of the part and how
they reflect light. However, the easiest way to tell is usually looking underneath
the painted parts to see that their undersides do not get completely covered
in paint.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to official LEGO sources, this particular sword was made in the following
colors:

(1) LEGO METALLIC SAND BLUE (BrickLink Metal Blue)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/14908529407/

(2) LEGO REDDISH GOLD / GOLD METALLIC (Lumped into BrickLink Copper but *not*
BrickLink Copper)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/14948075737/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/15056373636/

Notice the huge difference between these two colors that are both listed as Copper
on BrickLink.

(3) LEGO BRIGHT YELLOW = BrickLink Yellow

(4) LEGO METALLIC SAND YELLOW = BrickLink Flat Dark Gold

https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/14908616158/

(5) LEGO BRIGHT RED = BrickLink Red

(6) LEGO SILVER = split between BrickLink Pearl Light Gray *and* BrickLink Flat
Silver

https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/15076958255/

(7) LEGO BLACK = BrickLink Black

(8) LEGO WARM GOLD = BrickLink Pearl Gold

https://www.flickr.com/photos/126975831@N07/15211982695/

(9) LEGO NEW DARK RED = BrickLink Dark Red

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, LEGO only used nine colors to make the part. However, BrickLink inventories
list 11 colors. Why the difference? Because the Flat Silver ones and Pearl Light
Gray ones are considered the same color according to LEGO, and the Metallic Gold
ones are not really Metallic Gold but some varitaion of Pearl Gold. In other
words, there is a lot of work that needs to be done on BrickLink to fix up some
of the colors and inventories.

In any case, browse through the pictures above and see which one closest matches
your swords.

HTH,
Randy

  Assorted profoundly wise things

I know of no sets in which these hinges came unassembled. The parts list on
the box shows them assembled (photo attached). The fact that they are unassembled
in the inventory can be attributed to the fact that the person who inventoried
the set had a thing for breaking parts down into their smallest units in inventories.

If anyone is bored and is interested in finding it, there is only one more set
in the catalog which shows the hinge unassembled. I have no idea which set it
is, but it also needs to be corrected.
