Comments from Submitter:
The instructions and LEGO inventory page depicts a Devastator with a trans-red torso, but the set comes with a pearl light gray torso

Two questions have arised after re-counting my set before putting it up for sale:

1) Part

Part No: 32181c02 Name: Technic, Shock Absorber 10L Damped (Undetermined Type)
*
32181c02 Technic, Shock Absorber 10L Damped (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Technic, Shock Absorber
Marked for Deletion

says that the "spring type" is "undetermined", but there are no variants to choose
between. Shouldn't there be some? Attached is a picture of the part in my
set.

Yes, what ever happened to 32181c01? There is a 32181c03:

Part No: 32181c03 Name: Technic, Shock Absorber 10L Damped - No Spring
*
32181c03 (Inv) Technic, Shock Absorber 10L Damped - No Spring
Parts: Technic, Shock Absorber
Looks like we need one that has a spring.

  2) After counting this set, I have 4 left over bricks: 1x black 32054, 2x black
41677, 1x LBG 6538c, and one brick is missing: 1x 32278. These extra/missing
parts seems to make up for the differences between the BL inventory and Peeron's
(I've actually verified Peeron's inventory some years ago). It seems
that BL's inventory corresponds with the parts list in the building instructions
but apparently, there are inconsistencies between this and the actual contents
of the box. I've tried counting the number of bricks required in the building
instructions for those four parts, but there are six books, and I can't make
any of the counts in either of the two models match any of BL's or Peeron's
counts. But how should I handle these missing/extra parts? (I can see that the
part I'm missing was added to the BL inventory in 2012 but not find the reason
why).

Part No: 32054 Name: Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges and Stop Bush
*
32054 Technic, Pin 3L with Friction Ridges and Stop Bush
Parts: Technic, Pin

Part No: 41677 Name: Technic, Liftarm Thin 1 x 2 - Axle Holes
*
41677 Technic, Liftarm Thin 1 x 2 - Axle Holes
Parts: Technic, Liftarm

Part No: 6538c Name: Technic, Axle Connector 2L (Smooth with x Hole + Orientation)
*
6538c Technic, Axle Connector 2L (Smooth with x Hole + Orientation)
Parts: Technic, Connector

Part No: 32278 Name: Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 15
*
32278 Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 15
Parts: Technic, Liftarm

This other situation could be a case of multiple instructions. Check yours against
some of the others listed in databases. Brickset is a great resource for this
- there is a link there provided by Swooshable that will give you all the major
sources.

I already checked that but forgot to write it.

My instruction's seem to be identical to the ones on the LEGO website, and
the inventory count in book 3 are the same counts as BL's inventory (e.g.
37x 32278). But that list obviously don't match the actual contents of my
and the Peeron inventory authors box contents and the actual number of parts
needed for the build. I just recounted the number of 32278's used to build
the main model. It's 36 (my count for the secondary model is 35).

confirm it.

  Therefore, I think all of the evidence found in this thread added to the image

The alternate is where the concern lies. The question is whether the set ever
came with the long connector and that is what has yet to be convincingly demonstrated.

I'm glad some headway is being made on these palm trunks. When they first
appeared in the catalog, I couldn't make head or tail as to where they fit
into the inventory system.

Comments from Submitter:
I have bought the set 6411 on Ebay and the real palm trunk seems to be 2436b (empty hole, no slots inside).
All the parts are original because many of them were still clutched together and some of them are yellowed.

Unfortunately, I decided not to approve this request. I think you're probably
right and I'd like to get the undetermined entry out of the set inventory,
but there's no point in doing so if it's based on a source that I consider
unreliable.

If you find more reliable information in the future, then please resubmit the
request.

Robert -

I found a BrickShelf gallery that documents a sealed set being opened:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=268792

In a couple of the images in the upper-left corner you can definitely tell that
the palm trunks have the short connector:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Rober-to/Town/6411/6411g.jpg
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Rober-to/Town/6411/6411i.jpg

Therefore, I think all of the evidence found in this thread added to the image
is sufficient to prove that the alternate existed.

While I'm thinking about it, terms like "Type 1" and "Type 2" are singularly
unhelpful. For example:

Part No: 4662 Name: Duplo Hook with Thin Bracing
*
4662 Duplo Hook with Thin Bracing
Parts: DUPLO

Part No: 15449 Name: Duplo Hook with Thick Bracing
*
15449 Duplo Hook with Thick Bracing
Parts: DUPLO

If I had a random Duplo hook, what about either catalog entry would let me know
which one I had? Nothing in the title, no notes, and no comparison images.

I think any catalog entries which specify an item is type 1 or type 2 should
be looked at more closely for possible improvement.

I tried changing a bunch of part names years ago that had "Type 1" or "Type 2",
etc. in them and all of them were rejected. I still think it is wholly uninformative
and useless to have such things in the names of parts.

Cheers,
Randy

Right, I uploaded the light gray picture.
Maybe 'various color' ? As we do by the minifigs.

Speaking of pictures, it would be great if someone could upload a better photo
of the blue one.

Regardless of how often the inventory for this set has been changed in the past,
both hollow and closed studes on these hinges are possible to be in this set.
This means both versions should be included in the inventory, one as regular,
one as alternate. Since closed studes were the original when this set was released,
hollow studs were the "alternate" done by Lego themselves. There you have it.

I totally agree on that.
But in general, I‘ve given up on this issue.
Correcting the inventories could be done so fast and smoothly, if admins would
choose a better process...

  We you list it as part, you can select the right color like the minfig torso

I thought that's what you may be referring to. The reason torsos (and many
other part assemblies) are inventoried this way is so that they can be easily
used in multiple inventories.

I don't believe variable color inventories are appropriate for sets in most
cases. It could be done, yes, but I think having the alternate color for parts
is more appropriate for most sets (including this one).

You may notice that even sets which could include a larger variety of colors
are not traditionally given a single variable-color part inventory:

Set No: 222  Name: 1 x 1 Bricks
*
222-3 (Inv) 1 x 1 Bricks
62 Parts, 1961
Sets: Samsonite: Supplemental

And then sometimes you get only this (see inventory note):

Set No: 9962 Name: Flat Tiles
*
9962-1 (Inv) Flat Tiles
12 Parts, 1994
Sets: Educational & Dacta: Service Packs

  As MISB set you don't know what you have inside, it can be blue or light
gray.

Indeed that's true and the alternate part in the inventory will allow sellers
to part out the set depending on what color they find.

Robert

In this inventory we have the 'blue' and/or the 'light gray'
one.
But if we use 1 part for the inv. as 'various color'.

We you list it as part, you can select the right color like the minfig torso
https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=973&idColor=0#T=C&C=0
various color: (or no color)
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?P=973c02

As MISB set you don't know what you have inside, it can be blue or light
gray. (or maybe there is a color dot on the box as we seen on other sets at that
time)

About two weeks ago, I did some search and found few other auctions listing or
other photos of this gray transformer with the box of 740.
Otherwise, how did this gray transformer appear?

More important, please note that the blue era ended in 1979 and the gray era
began in 1980. However, it seems to me that the blue track-related parts had
already began to be replaced by their gray ones. For example, see
[p=bb93]
and
[p=bb141c01].
Their gray ones do not appear in any set. (Of course, I will work on them
)

Knowing this fact would make my future inventory requests much smoother.

At the time of this request, longtime member brasletty has a new set for sale
which also shows the light gray transformer (photo attached) The part in light
gray appears in no other set at this time, but multiple photos demonstrate its
existence and there are 7 listings of light gray for sale.

I have little doubt in the accuracy of this request and it has been approved.

Right, I uploaded the light gray picture.
Maybe 'various color' ? As we do by the minifigs.

None that I'm aware of. It's just habit for me to submit change requests
that way.

In this inventory there is also 3794 in LBG color, can you also check it, you
only change white 3794

Sorry, I forgot this one in my request. It's also non-grooved. I made an
extra request for the LBG part:

Comments from Submitter:
check undetermined type: my source set was and is still build up 1 time. 3794 just change because the catalog change was made to the undetermined type a few weeks ago. The black 3794 is the -b type, DBG and white 3794 are the -a type. For the slope 3684 it's the -c type.

Hello!

FYI

In Inventories Requests, SezaR writes:
  The problem of hinges is that they started to appear with hollow studs since
1987 but I believe they were in production since 1985. Some sets such as 7823,
7735 and 7745 come with hinges. But I have never seen them in any auction with
hinges of solid studs. (except for, 7745 a couple of times with 2* gray 2-finger
hinges, but not the other hinges in this set)

My copy of 7823 from 1986 (catalogue!) came with hollowly studded hinges:

Kind Regards

* Change 6 Part Brown {2536 Plant, Tree Palm Trunk - Undetermined Type to 2536b Plant, Tree Palm Trunk - Short Connector, no Axle Hole}

Comments from Submitter:
Request was originally submitted by member ParisianStore. The source was a used set purchased on eBay and the request was denied based on the source.

The accuracy of the request was later confirmed by catalog administrator maggiec based on a sealed set. The original submitter should get credit for this change, but has not resubmitted the request.

It is possible, perhaps even likely, that this set also included 2536a at some point (possibly even a mixture of both in some sets). That has not been confirmed yet, though.

  Normally old inventories with no source are unreliable when it comes to variants.
This particular submitter, though, is an expert on Classic Space, and when I
have contacted him in the past he has been able to defend all of his old inventories
with sealed set contents.

To be clear, my earlier comment wasn't meant to question the original submitter's
good faith; I realize it could have been inferred as such, which was unintended.

But to follow up on a previous remark, how can we know b-type is more common
(cf: rules) from a sample of one, anyway?
I can't dismiss the original inventory as innacurate; what I can do is ask
for further input from others to establish precedence between versions, thus
properly following the rules as they stand. I suppose a review of the rules themselves
would be out of the question?

In the meanwhile - please advise how to proceed. Should I add a-type as alternate,
for the sake of inclusion?
Pedro

I have cheanged the inventory to Type A for the moment. I'll send a note
to the original submitter to confirm the older part.

Hello

This set was released between 1983-90. The inventory was corrected as you said.
The problem of hinges is that they started to appear with hollow studs since
1987 but I believe they were in production since 1985. Some sets such as 7823,
7735 and 7745 come with hinges. But I have never seen them in any auction with
hinges of solid studs. (except for, 7745 a couple of times with 2* gray 2-finger
hinges, but not the other hinges in this set)

the finger hinges for this set have been moved around, added, and deleted in
nearly every possible way. They're fine now. Leave them alone.

Some time ago, I made some changes to old space sets regarding these hinges.

So 1985 is also the first year of hollow studs in my findings.

Set 6844 (1983): Solid studs
Set 6928 (1984): Solid studs
Set 6872 (1985): Hollow studs
Set 6055 (1985): Hollow studs

All I know are the release years of the sets, so actually I can't prove that
1985 is the year that the hollow studs made their first appearance. But they
show up in sets that were first released in 1985. My sets might be from a later
production. I don't how for how many years each set were produced.

the white color hinge 4275 never found as 4275a type, same for the white but
the 4276 started in 1987 sets

Primarily because you said:

  I bought this set in a large lot of sets.

You can't know if the parts in this set have been tampered with. Also, flat
silver makes more sense when looking at the set photo - these parts are clearly
intended to be silvery to accent the metallic silver parts in the set.

Further, there is some debate over whether PLG and flat silver are officially
different colors or merely variations in what TLG intended to be the same color.

You'll notice that this part only appears in 1 set in PLG:

Part No: 78c07  Name: Hose, Ribbed 7mm D.  7L / 5.6cm
*
78c07 Hose, Ribbed 7mm D. 7L / 5.6cm
Parts: Hose, Ribbed 7mm D.

and this only in 4 sets:

Part No: 78c11  Name: Hose, Ribbed 7mm D. 11L / 8.8cm
*
78c11 Hose, Ribbed 7mm D. 11L / 8.8cm
Parts: Hose, Ribbed 7mm D.

So the parts appear in a combined total of 5 sets in PLG, but in a combined total
of 40 sets in flat silver.

* Change 1 Part {Metallic Silver to Pearl Light Gray} 78c11 Hose, Ribbed 7mm D. 11L

Okay, here's what I did. I approved your requests (except for adding the
alternate) and then changed the colors of all the ribbed hoses in this set to
flat silver. I did this because in large official images of the set all three
hoses appear to be the same color (I also submitted the largest possible image
of the set to the catalog).

The PCC you mentioned for the 11L hose is shared by PLG and flat silver on BrickLink,
BTW, so either could be correct. I also updated the ribbed hoses in the extra
parts section to flat silver for this set.

This changes may not be correct, but I think the only way to know for sure is
to check a brand new set.

If you're in doubt which color the hoses are, why would you choose Flat Silver
instead of PLG? I've argued that they're PLG and I believe my image shows
it. If not convinced, I've now taken another picture to show the color differences.

On top is some flat silver parts (the tile only exists in Flat Silver and it
comes from set 10232), including the short hose found in my spare parts.

On the bottom are PLG parts (including one of the hoses that must belong to set
8637).

In other words, I still believe that PLG is the correct color of the hoses in
this set.

Dan had a particular way in giving marks for each inventory change reqeust. He
told me this himself in one of my recent dreams.
He gives some weight to each inv. change requests in a way that if the inv. change
is for an old set, the weight is more than 100 times than if an inv. change request
is added for some part like a jumper with/without groove. Specially, if the inv.
change is submitted for a set that had not have any change for years and that
the submitted h has suffered some grifes from admins, then the weight would be
200.

I heard somebody has been knocking my door.
Our excel file consists of 31 sheets for 31 sets, each consisting of some parts
in one of the following status:
1) need further investigation (we don't know yet if the part has to be added
to the inventory of that set)
2) we know that the part has to be added (or removed) and we have found enough
evidence (so once it is possible, the inventory change can be submitted)
3) we know and we are sure that the part has to be added to the inventory (or
removed from the inv.) but we need more evidence to prove it to Stormchaser/admin_Russel/viejos

If this inventory change is going to be approved, then I can assume we can remove
the third category from my excel file and submit them right away. It will be
more than 100 inventory change requests. I guess my name and Lego.12vtrains'
one should then be added to the Guinness book of World Records?

I have bought the set 6411 on Ebay and the real palm trunk seems to be 2436b (empty hole, no slots inside).
All the parts are original because many of them were still clutched together and some of them are yellowed.

Unfortunately, I decided not to approve this request. I think you're probably
right and I'd like to get the undetermined entry out of the set inventory,
but there's no point in doing so if it's based on a source that I consider

Thanks for checking! I updated the inventory of that set to 2536a, although
I didn't put 2536b as an alternate. If you think it would be reasonable

Okay, so I went down to the basement (which I hate to do after dark even though
it's just as dark down there during midday) to take a look at a sealed one
in my shop figuring I'd find 2536b, as these sets were from a later run purchased
from KB Toy Liquidators a year or two after they were at other stores, but the
four trunk segments I can see through the window under the flap are all 2536a.

more definitive evidence.

Set No: 8637 Name: Mission 8: Volcano Base
*
8637-1 (Inv) Mission 8: Volcano Base
688 Parts, 6 Minifigures, 2008
Sets: Agents

* Add 2 Part 78c07 Pearl Light Gray Hose, Ribbed 7mm D. 7L (Alternate) (match ID 2)
* Change 2 Part {Metallic Silver to Flat Silver} 78c07 Hose, Ribbed 7mm D. 7L {match ID 0 to 2}
* Change 1 Part {Metallic Silver to Pearl Light Gray} 78c11 Hose, Ribbed 7mm D. 11L

Comments from Submitter:
I have bought the set 6411 on Ebay and the real palm trunk seems to be 2436b (empty hole, no slots inside).
All the parts are original because many of them were still clutched together and some of them are yellowed.

Unfortunately, I decided not to approve this request. I think you're probably
right and I'd like to get the undetermined entry out of the set inventory,
but there's no point in doing so if it's based on a source that I consider
unreliable.

If you find more reliable information in the future, then please resubmit the
request.

Thanks for checking! I updated the inventory of that set to 2536a, although
I didn't put 2536b as an alternate. If you think it would be reasonable
to include the alternate also, then let me know and I can do it.

Set No: 6416 Name: Poolside Paradise
*

Sets: Town: Paradisa

* Delete 6 Part 2536 Brown Plant, Tree Palm Trunk - Undetermined Type
* Add 6 Part 2536a Brown Plant, Tree Palm Trunk - Long Connector

Comments from Submitter:
Confirmed by catalog administrator maggiec in a sealed set purchased new. Two other copies of the same set owned by Maggie contained 2536b Plant, Tree Palm Trunk - Short Connector, no Axle Hole. One copy had 3 each of 2536a and 2536b and the other copy had all 2536b.

Part 2536b was likely an alternate for this set, but the origin of Maggie's other two sets is not as certain. Therefore, I'm not adding it as an alternate at this time.

Is this an undetermined entry or am I missing something?

Part No: 4820ac01 Name: Duplo Trailer with Frame

4820ac01 Duplo Trailer with Frame

Looks like it may have been replaced by:

Part No: 4820bc01 Name: Duplo Trailer with Frame with Small Reinforcement
*
4820bc01 Duplo Trailer with Frame with Small Reinforcement
Parts: DUPLO, Vehicle

Part No: 4820cc01 Name: Duplo Trailer with Frame with Large Reinforcement
*
4820cc01 Duplo Trailer with Frame with Large Reinforcement

If it ain't so, then the first one probably needs a more descriptive title
because the photo is no help whatsoever.

Ok, no problem, do the best you decide. I said how I got this set because I think
these pieces are really the original ones. The set is nearly complete and the
pieces seem to be the one from the real box (yellow pieces, used faces...), so
I think the tree is also the real one. But of course, it can have been replaced
by a tree from another box, I can not be sure. And for example, in the tree I
have received, there are only 5 segments, which means that one of them has been
removed (or the current inventory is wrong).

I plan to approve this request.

However, just so that there will be a record for future reference, please specify
the condition of the set when you first acquired it (new sealed, new opened/complete,
new incomplete, or used). Also, please specify if the parts for this set were
mixed with parts for any other sets.

I'm trying to move more in this direction for inventory requests so that
people in the future can have greater knowledge regarding changes made to inventories.
There were many changes made in the past which were not well documented (frequently
due to forum messages attached to change requests not being saved, although they're
permanently saved now).

Thanks.

Thanks for the information.

The earlier sets are all automatic for the jumper variant, as no variant presented
itself so those should be easy to do. Unfortunately, many of the sets would probably
end up staying undermined for awhile when the transition phase to variant B starts
and ends,, due to the fac that many were approved with the undermined variant
even when the set never was intended to have the A variant (or sets that were
marked with the A variant before the B variant was added to the catalog). I'm
not sure the reason (whether time contraint, or ignorance, or accidental, or
something else -- I know that I have made several requests in the past out
of ignorance, so it can be easy to miss some things -- which it why it is
good to have multiple people working together for accountability and verification),
but either way I hope we can all work together to perfect the inventories with
variants.

(Though, I would also strongly caution the administration to make sure that if
a new variant is approved in the catalog, that the other variant is added immediately,
to make sure that we do not run into such situations in the future.)

Thank you for all of your hard work and your prompt responses in the request
changes.

* Add 1 Part minepig02 Bright Pink Minecraft Pig, Baby - Complete Assembly (Counterpart)

The question here is whether to add a new assembly to the catalog which has the
nametag attached.

I'm inclined to treat this like minifigure assemblies (the complete figure
is inventoried without accessories). I would say the nametag is an accessory
because it can be easily removed and official set photos show the pig without
a nametag.

Therefore, I think it would be reasonable to consider the pig as assembled in
steps 1-3 as the correct assembly for this set and ignore the accessory which
is added in steps 4-5.

I just notice that I replied to this tread but not to the proper one, this one
is active and my reply is at the previous one (which was 4 min earlier posted
with the same request).

Nevermind, I was thinking about it further and I can agree with your argumentation.
Besides that, adding new pig with attached those two parts would means that two
assemblies should be added then to the catalog, with and without sticker, like
for example those in minifig:
[m=sw798]
[m=sw798s]
and it would complicate everything.

BTW this set particular set, did you look also at the horse in this instruction
its assembly has the head added at penultimate step, so bags are aded before
whole assembly is completed. It not yet added but it's pending

Some time ago, I made some changes to old space sets regarding these hinges.

Here are my findings: https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=221772

So 1985 is also the first year of hollow studs in my findings.
