I read all the inventory change requests concerning the 12v motors done by member
SezaR during the last months (set 7730, 7750, 7760, 7725, 7727, 7755, 7735, 7745,
7865, 5086), I strongly confirm his point of view and I hope that soon BL Inventory
will introduce the new subdivision between 4 Types of motor!

However there are some exceptions…

Here below I attach 3 pictures of a MIB 7727, found in an Ebay auction 2 months
ago: you can clearly recognize a Type 1 motor (bb12Va) from 1980, even if the
set comes from 1983 (see the 1983 train catalogue included)!!!
Quite surely Lego had some old red motors in his stock and used them in some
copies of 7727…

In my set there is only the following "parents" catalog from 1981 (I was able
to read the code 109782/109882 EU II (D/A/CH/F/I) through the transparent plastic
cover):

Catalog No: c81eupg Name: 1981 Für Eltern / Pour les parents / Per i genitori (Parents Guide) (109782/109882 EU II (D/A/CH/F/I))
*
c81eupg 1981 Für Eltern / Pour les parents / Per i genitori (Parents Guide) (109782/109882 EU II (D/A/CH/F/I))
Catalogs: 1981

No catalogue from 1982. I think that my set comes from the very first edition
of the year 1981, while Stefaan's one is from the next year 1982.

During the early 80's there was the transition period from old type to modern
type bricks, so it is possible to find both types mixed together.

You can clearly recognize the two bricks 4 x 12 (one red and one blue), but apparently
there is no yellow brick 4 x 12.

366-1 (Inv) Basic Set
166 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1981
Sets: Universal Building Set: Basic Set

Comments from Submitter:
I owned this Basic set when I was a child and I don't remember this part was included.
I recently bought it again in MISB condition and I really can't see this part into the box. The pictures on the box don't show it too.
If you need I will upload explaining pictures.

Elias is right, 7860 came out at least at first (1980-1981) with 3242a, then
it was replaced with 3242d, and finally at the end of the eighties with 3242b.
Take a look at the attached pictures, in particular the front and back of the
box.

As it has been discussed here:

http://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=182644

when 7727 appeared (1983), it was a standard to include a conducting rail curved,
interference-free (part id 3241c) in 12V Train sets of that period.
The pictures below, founded in the web, can show this fact (the 3241c can be
recognized on the bottom).

As far as the 2731a Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
is concerned, it was an improvement of 3241c and probably started to appear in
1985 in sets 7745 and 7735, not before, so it could not be included in 7727 which
was produced until 1984.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but can you tell which type of conducting rail
straight are included in your sealed set?
Conducting rail straight with connection holes (part id 3242) or conducting rail
straight without connection holes (part id 3242c)?

Another question: I think that in your set a catalogue was also included, can
you tell the year of the catalogue?

Thanks!

As it has been discussed here:

http://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=196663

almost surely, as it happened to the 7740, the 7730 appeared at least at first
(1980) with 16 curved rails 3241b without connection holes.

Almost surely the evolution of the track was the same too, i.e. in the mid-late
production runs (1981-1982) the 16 curved rails 3241b without connection holes
were substituted by 15 curved rails 3241 with connection holes + 1 curved rail
3241c interference-free + 1 Paper, Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail
- 117983 . (Please look at the picture below founded in the web: on the bottom
we can clearly recognize the Paper, Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail
- 117983)

As far as the 2731a Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
is concerned, as it has been discussed here:

http://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=182644

just because the 7730 was produced until 1982 and not until 1984, the chance
that this part was in the set is still slighter. (2731a was an improvement of
3241c and probably appeared in 1985, not before).

In Inventories Requests, Thea writes:
I have found some other evidence that the curved track may have had connections
as early as 1981.

I am reaching the same conclusion!

It comes from a track layout diagram, and not the actual track
pieces. If you look at the peeron instruction scans for set 7860, on page 6
the diagram shows the connection at the curved section. The date on the instruction
can be seen on the advertising page with the switches.

This is still questionable, because I also have diagrams on my (D/A/CH/B/NL)
instruction sheet from 1981 for the Universal Transformer that show the connection
to a straight track. These instructions are different from the peeron ones for
7864-1, and show how to use the transformer with various sets, including set
7860.

It is true but, even if the instruction scans show the date 1981, I am quite
sure that it is a mid-late 80s version: if you look on the other pages you can
clearly see the 2 Light Gray Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Straight for 12v
Signal with Rail Interruption at End (part number 3242b), and they were only
included in the mid-late 80s sets (according to the BL catalogue they appear
as alternate items).

Anyway there are 2 facts that lead me to the conclusion that the curved track
may have had connections as early as 1981.

The first.
Some months ago I bought a 7855 sealed set, a very early version because a 1981
Mini Train European catalogue (EU II 111583) was included in that box, and all
the curved rails have the connection holes! (See pictures 1-2 below)

The second.
In 1981 the 7725 appeared. As confirmed by the BL inventory and also by one picture
in the internal box (see picture 3 below), no straight rail was included in that
set, so they had to find out a new way to bring electricity to the track... And
I think that the answer was to make the curved rails with connection holes!

As far as the suppressor rail 3241c is concerned, I don't know if it appeared
at the same time of the curved rails with connection holes, or if it was an improvement
of the following years...

I'm still gathering info and will keep you posted.

* Add 16 Part 3241b Light Gray Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved without Cable Connection Holes (match ID 1)

I had missed the earlier thread about the 12v curved track. After reading it
I pulled out some of my old catalogues and checked the 2nd edition Collectors
Guide.
Set 7740-1 is shown as 1980-86 in the Guide.

I looked at a 1983 train catalog, (D/A/CH/F/I)100782/100882. On page 8, set 7725
box picture, just in front of the wheels of the engine on a curved track, there
is a hole in the curved track.

So a curved track with connections was available BEFORE set 7740-1 went out of
production. Some later sets may have contained the newer track. Or the section
that I can see may be the track with the suppressor and there is only 1 curved
section with the connection in the set.

I agree with you, it is clear that in 1983 the curved rails were with cable connection
holes; the are some more pictures that can confirm it.
Probably the year 1982 was the key point in which things started to change, but
I'm not 100% sure about this: on the next days I'm going to make a general
summary with pictures and post it here, but I need some time to prepare it.

As mentioned, we are far removed from the time these trains were available.
All the 12v tracks from all my 12v sets have been intermingled for many years,
so I can't give a definitive answer from my own collection.

Mold numbers printed on the bottom of the rails could help you to date them.

To cover all possibilities, I think 16 of the 3241b should be listed in the inventory, with
3241 and 3241c as alternates.

I will try to find out more information about the 3241c.

It would be important to understand in which year ( 1982 ?? ) 3241c started to
appear!

As for both 2731 with the attached wires, I disliked them so much because of the fixed wire, I either
gave them away or buried them in some box I haven't opened in years.

Please take a look at this sealed set here:

http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=DiMarco&itemID=75543794

If we enlarge one of the pictures uploaded by the seller we can clearly recognize
the 4166 sleepers with cable grooves.
I think he can confirm this fact.

As viejos explains here:

http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=900668

at least at first power connections were only made on straight rails.

Images on the 1980 train catalogue would confirm this fact.

Searching on the web during the last months I found a lot of pictures which would
also be a confirmation.
Here below some images from 3 different sets (pictures 1-2: set A; pictures 3-4:
set B; pictures 5-6-7: set C).

2 x 2 with 3 Plug Holes, Trans-Clear Diffuser Lens could be included in that
Service pack in place of 08010ac01 White Electric, Light Brick 12V 2 x 2 with
2 Plug Holes, Trans-Clear Smooth Lens.

Bonus question: did you noticed the error in the scanned manual? It is exactly
in the page you posted at step 7.
Solution: One dot in the picture is yellow, although it should be red. Check
the new item in step 6 and how it looks like in step 7.

Hi,
are you referring to the dot circled in blue in the picture above?
Telling the truth I've never noticed that mistake since you mentioned it!
Thanks for sharing it!
Best regards,

12VTrains

Please make changes to the following inventory:

Set No: 7855 Name: 8 Curved Electric Rails Gray 12v
*
7855-1 (Inv) 8 Curved Electric Rails Gray 12v
8 Parts, 1980
Sets: Train: Supplemental: 12V

* Add 8 Part 3241b Light Gray Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved without Cable Connection Holes (match ID 1)
* Change 8 Part Light Gray 3241 Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved {Regular to Alternate} {match ID 0 to 1}

Comments from Submitter:
The pictures on the front and back of the box clearly show the 3241b Conducting Rail Curved without Cable Connection Holes.
From 1980 to 1983 the pictures both on the Lego Catalogue and the Train Catalogue show the 3241b Conducting Rail Curved without Cable Connection Holes too, so it should be included in the first production runs of the set.
Since 1984 the pictures on the Lego Catalogue show the 3241 Conducting Rail Curved with Cable Connection Holes.

Hi,

I controlled in my set and I found 12 x "3622 yellow brick 1 x 3"; the inventory
on one side of the box also shows 12 x "3622 yellow brick 1 x 3".
I took a look at the manual to build the last model. It's true, apparently
you need 13 pcs but only one of those is not so clear to recognize, the one shown
on image number 6 (circled in blue, see the picture above): maybe it is not a
3622 yellow brick but they are 1 x "3004 yellow brick 1 x 2" + 1 x "3005 yellow
brick 1 x 1". In fact in the set there are "3004 yellow brick 1 x 2" and "3005
yellow brick 1 x 1" enough to do it.
This is the only explanation I can found…
Regards,

12VTrains

Just an update on these requests. We're a little behind at the moment while
dealing with some larger issues...

Hi Russell,
don't worry no problem!

  Comments from Submitter:
1) Motor bb12va (first era) appears in the early production run, while motor bb12vb (second era) appears in the late production run.

Is there a reason why the variant motors have not been added to inventories?
[p=bb12va]
[p=bb12vb]
[p=bb12vc]

Sincerely I don't know why the variant motors haven't been added to the
1980s 12V trains inventories yet, but I think that if we do this action several
changes have to be done, i.e. to upload them with the idea that:
1) motor bb12va appears in sets from 1980 to 1982
2) motor bb12vb appears in sets from 1983 to 1989
3) motor bb12va appears in some production runs (of 7745, 7735 and 7865) at the
end of the 80s (+-1989) and in a Service pack until 1993.
I am quite sure about 1) and 2) but I cannot confirm 3).

Does this have something to do with the compatiblity of "middle prong" electrical
components? The only one listed in an inventory is listed singly in a parts pack.

I think that the only problem of compatibility is to connect motor bb12va to
the 2-prong connectors: you can't do it!

Morris: I agree and confirm this. You have to use the cables with connector 765c01
and the cables with connector 766c01.

OR: Use the RARE, early '80s bb81c01 connectors!!!

Thanks Laurenz for your adds and agreement!

  2) 3839a (released until 1983) appears in the early production run, while 3839b appears in the late production run.
3) 3040a (released until 1981) appears in the early production run, while 3040 appears in the late production run.
4) 08010ac01 (year released 1980-1981) appears in the early production run, while 08010bc01 appears in the late production run.

For these other three, is it just coincidence that the production years you have
given match the BrickLink years exactly? Just a warning about BL dates in the
catalog - they are usually correct, but at times they may be very wrong. As a
general rule, we should add variants only based on original sources.

I gave the production years found on BL; thanks for your notice, I will be careful!

  Regarding the 12V light brick,

Part No: 08010ac01 Name: Electric, Light Brick 12V 2 x 2 with 2 Plug Holes, Trans-Clear Smooth Lens
*
08010ac01 Electric, Light Brick 12V 2 x 2 with 2 Plug Holes, Trans-Clear Smooth Lens
Parts: Electric, Light & Sound
...it is clear that this part was engineered for the 1980's trains, so obviously
the first variant was in this set. But regarding the other parts:

- Morris: The first sets that were released (1980 - 1982) were with lightbrick
08010ac01 and connectors: 765c01. Later, the lightbrick got replaced with 08010bc01
because Lego experienced that they were broken to fast. The 08010bc01 is a whole
other system!!

I can't wait to see your next comparison about those light brick on YT!!!
Greetings

M_o_r_r_i_s

Part No: 3839a Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Handles - Round Ends, Mid Attachment
*
3839a Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Handles - Round Ends, Mid Attachment
Parts: Plate, Modified

Part No: 3040a Name: Slope 45 2 x 1 without Bottom Tube
*
3040a Slope 45 2 x 1 without Bottom Tube
Parts: Slope
...you are likely correct, but the issue will need some study.

As far as 3839a and 3040a are concerned I agree with you, the issue need more
study, but I think that it is in accordance with what happens about the same
bricks for the set 722-1 and 733-1 (both producted in the same period).

Now regarding whether a part should be an alternate or regular, officially the
part in the Regular Items section is supposed to be the most common. But in the
absence of any hard data as to which is more common, there are two other commonly
accepted approaches:

1) the early variant is always "Regular", the later variant is "Alternate".

2) an artificial timeline is used to determine the official release year of the
new variant, and from that year on, the older part is added as the "Alternate".
In the years leading up, the rule would be as in 1) above.

Russell

I did my change request referring to the approach 1) above.

Black and red bricks 2 x 4 no. 3001 (with a central stud cross support) are included in my 7740 that I have owned since 1984 (so a late version), but in the first production runs the black and red bricks 2 x 4 were without cross supports (no. 3001old).

I would like to add that electric train motor 12V modern type III with 3 slotted
contact holes no. bb12vc cannot be found in set 7740 because it started to appear
in the late 80s.

Service Pack Catalogue confirms.
Regards,
