allow me to remove the background. The only issue is, when I upload the replacement
image, will it become the main image? Who can make it the primary image?

No. We have some basic onsite image tools that we can use to crop or brighten
new images a bit (if necessary) before we approve them, but mayor alterations
to images that were originally submitted by another user are not allowed. So
if you want to improve the image quality, you would have to submit your own images
