| Hello
Why can I not find "Minifigure, Head Standard Grin Pattern - Blocked Open
Stud" in the catalog anymore? Looks like it has been converted to "Minifigure,
Head Standard Grin Pattern" which is totaly blocked. Can anybody clarify???

| It’s one of the parts affected by the variants merge; now those hollow stud and
blocked open stud heads are together in one listing. Sellers can note which type
they have for sale if they choose.
It was a huge deal and highly debated when it was initially announced but the
merge went ahead anyway.
If you look under “help center” there’s a list of all parts that are affected
by the merges and more information as well.

| Annoying because there is not even any mentioning of the blocked open stud version
on the entry. How should a new buyer/seller even know??

The listing has (old) comparison images and an Additional Note describing the
variants:
"This part has multiple variants with differing stud types. Versions of this
part exist - in order from oldest to newest - with an open stud blocked by plastic
in the shape of a 'Y' (previously known as 'blocked open stud',
a hollow stud, and an open stud blocked by plastic in the shape of a thick 'I'
(previously known as 'vented stud'. A rare version of this part with
an open stud blocked by plastic in the shape of a thin 'I' may also exist.
Versions of this part with alternate item number 88475 have a slightly shorter
stud than other versions."

It's the base part of the part you are referring to. BrickLink can't
really add variant notes on 4000 decorated heads.

There’s only one other entry. Whether you arrive on
or
you can see there’s only one other variant (pic below).
If the one you have or the one you want has a solid stud, you want the -a variant,
the older variant.
Otherwise, you want the generic modern one.

| That does not help me. when I specifically know that the blocked open stud version
exists. Why is there not an example of this particular minifig head? They came
in abundance in late 80s/early 90s.

When I say example I mean why is there not a picture of this variant attached
to the listing? It's like it doesn't exist anymore

It doesn't exist as a catalogued variant. There are now two catalogued types:
the solid stud and the not solid stud. The not solid stud one can be of a number
of variant types, the vented "Y", vented "I" or hollow stud but
they are all located under the same entry. If you want to add a note when listing
to call it a blocked open stud then you can do this.

I sympathize with you because I didn't want this merge project to happen.
But specifically to your question, a new buyer/seller doesn't need to know.
As far as the marketplace is concerned, it no longer matters.

recieve what is depicted. It is very cumbersome to upload my own pictures to

Yes, this is the new reality that this particular variant change has forced on
all of us.
But, this could also happen with any part that has variations that the BL catalog
doesn't recognize. It happens all the time with buyers declaring older parts
without LEGO logos are fake. It happens when buyers can't tell that an image
is showing a front and back view and expects to get 2 parts. It happens when
a buyer expects accessories on a minifig that clearly aren't pictured or
listed.
We can't always meet buyer's expectations when they don't know or
understand the system. All you can do it explain how things work on BrickLink,
point them to any relevant resources in Help or on the Forum, and then hope for
the best.

Yes, the project was purported to stop sellers from getting in trouble, but it
will lead to sellers getting in trouble, unfortunately. People are going to
rebuild minifigs and not know that there is an accurate head and an inaccurate
head and customers will be angry that they got the hollow stud on a minifigure
from 1993.
Bricklink chose that problem over the other.

I was in the midst of a project to break out torsos that were vintage from modern
torsos with the same print, which would help collectors get the correct piece
and push back on sellers rebuilding minifigs with the wrong era parts and passing
them off as vintage. But Bricklink stopped that project right in its tracks
and moved backward from my vantage point. It is just what it is.

One way round this is not to show the head stud from above in any images. That
way, no particular variant is shown. That is exactly what happens with, for example,
1x4 bricks. No undersides are shown, so any variant is allowable.

Yes. BrickLink should remove all the photo images and insets designed to specifically
show the variant. I mentioned this way back when this started, but... oh well.

One workaround is to link them to this page I made
https://www.bricklink.com/aboutMe.asp?u=Nubs_Select&pageID=59816
But in general most won’t know anymore sadly
