Hello,

Let's play Old Stitch - New Stitch!

I'm working on:

Minifig No: dis174 Name: Stitch - Dark Azure
*
dis174 (Inv) Stitch - Dark Azure
Minifigures: Disney: Lilo & Stitch
and need to decide on submitting new colors or new parts vs.

Minifig No: dis001 Name: Stitch, Disney, Series 1 (Minifigure Only without Stand and Accessories)
*
dis001 (Inv) Stitch, Disney, Series 1 (Minifigure Only without Stand and Accessories)
Minifigures: Collectible Minifigures: Disney: Disney Series 1

The mold numbers on the head and legs are the same. I am voting for new colors
for the head and legs and a new entry for the torso because of the tail. Anyone
else agree?

Thanks,
~Jen

I think I concur, but can’t quite tell in the images, but is the nose print a
little different on the 2 or am I just mis seeing it as it looks like more
of the base is printed on the one tho I’m probably just going crazy

Not crazy. The spread on the black paint for the eyes and the dark blue paint
for the nose is slightly wider and with a more defined edge on the newer part.
This just seems like a technique difference more than an intentional design difference.
Perhaps?

You might just be right!

But variations in fabrication, color and paint are common @LEGO.

The key question to make a different entry (if I understand it correctly) is
did they design / want this change?
The fact the mold numbers are the same may mean the opposite.

I don't know, I could be also a cat

The hair on the right head appears to be made of three tufts, whereas the one
on the right looks like two. Is this just due to the differing angles of the
heads though?

I think it's the angle. There are 3 tufts on the right in the picture taken
from the back

Yes, the way I photographed them shows them on a slight angle. The heads have
the same mold number and appear identical even down to the mold pip. Interesting
though: the old one I have weighs 2.46g and the new one 2.52g.

Thanks,
~Jen

That would be the different pigment then?  Seems a lot (2+%).

Maybe? The newer legs weigh only .01g more. The new torsos weigh 1.28g and 1.32g.
So, either new stuff weighs more or Dark Azure stuff weighs more.

Or one is actually slightly larger due to molding tolerances, or one has a heavier
piece of debris from the production line or raw material molded into it, or one
has an air bubble in it somewhere and the other doesn't, etc., etc.

Variation happens. That is normal to any production process. The goal of process
engineers is to minimize that variation where possible. I used to be one.
