So..... yes I read about the new interface. As I am preparing to begin inventory
submission on a new 2025 set, I am wondering where all the catalog options have
disappeared to. I've found most, and wow, is it a LOT more clicks.
I am sincerely hoping that if Administration values the hardworking catalog submitters,
who still do this stuff for free, that they will consider instituting an entire
tab or page just for inventory submitters. You know, the ones who really load
all that info into the database because we are bored. Hint hint.
I had to switch back to 'classic' style so I could go to 'My Activity'
in order to figure out what new part I just submitted, so I can add the photo.
If anyone can please direct me to the following in the NEW interface, I am curious:
1. How do you quickly access the 'My Activity' section?
2. How do you quickly load a part to find the option to add an image?
3. How do you quickly go to the pending parts list so you can figure out what
the next sequential item number is, so the next item can be correctly added?
The key is "quickly", as in two clicks or less from the home page. Because
if the new interface does not allow this, then this is much more work than usual.
1. How do you quickly access the 'My Activity' section?
I have requested to have it be back under a tab. But I've also bookmarked
it.
2. How do you quickly load a part to find the option to add an image?
I am not sure what you mean. Type it in the search bar and select "Catalog"
on the left?
3. How do you quickly go to the pending parts list so you can figure out what
the next sequential item number is, so the next item can be correctly added?
I don't do that. I go to the correct category and type in something like
4073pb* and sort "Number" "Down". I take the next one and if
it is pending, I just start sequencing the number until it goes through.
A really nice future feature would be entering the mold and having it select
the next open number.
A really nice future feature would be entering the mold and having it select
the next open number.
What would be even better is entering the mold and the system generating the
number automatically on insert (because this would avoid the condition of two
people selecting the same next open number and yes I know there can still be
a race condition but it's less likely).

You can't submit items with the same item number as an existing item, pending
or not.
Yes, giving out the next sequence number could potentially solve some problems.
But I imagine it would also cause a lot more missed number sequences. People
submit stuff all the time that's incorrect, a duplicate, or that they don't
have an image for. These tend to also have incorrect sequence numbers. Admin
need to investigate if they are legit, correct the errors, contact the submitter
and wait for a possible reply, etc. so they tend to hang around the Pending Log
for a while. If the system gave every wrong part a right number, then we wouldn't
be able to use those numbers in the meantime.
Also, if the system just gave everyone the right number, how would we all learn
how the sequencing works, how to search the Catalog, and why you should learn
to check the Approval Log? lol

This is a good objection. So we could have a pending table separate from the
"real" table (I'm using "table" loosely, both pending and
approved items could be in the same DB table) and the number gets generated when
the item is approved.
Just a thought, I know it won't happen, but I can't help thinking about
DB issues and how to address them.

All of your pending activity is there. My Activity is only exclusively used for
one thing: deleting a pending Change Item request.

The Add or Change page.
3. How do you quickly go to the pending parts list so you can figure out what
the next sequential item number is, so the next item can be correctly added?
The link to the Approval Pending Log is right there at the top of the Add or

Yes, this new interface is no help for Catalog submitters. I built a set of links
so I can actually work:
Add or Change
Catalog search
What's New
Color Guide
Inventories
ICT
My Activity
Forum Messages
Then, I had to use a third-party add-on to my browser to get rid of the sticky
nav bar, gray out all the bright shiny white, move the footer down to where it's
not shouting at me, wipe away that LEGO font that looks blurry on my screen,
and block the little fence post things that seems to always follow me. My browser
is never wide enough to even see the drop down menus so whatever.
Basically, the took away my workspace so I built it back.
Sorry that you are also having trouble. If you want any tips in how I have fixed
all this, feel free to reach out!
Thanks,
~Jen
I don't. The Add or Change page is the only page I use for Catalog work.
All of your pending activity is there.
I have never really looked that page over to see if I could move in.
I cannot fathom how you have done the amount of catalog work you have without
using the My Additions Pending Approval links right there on the page where everything
starts. It goes to show how great BrickLink (before this new nav) was/is that
there are many ways to approach your work.

Great phrase, stick-to-itiveness
Two longtime anchors of the site, as I see it. You both are owed a great deal
of gratefulness from BL, both admin and membership. Hopefully it's being
expressed, in one form or another.

As I said: mot-valise… it’s actually a translation of the English word
but with a more common word (valise = suitcase) because, before it was
changed by Caroll, portemanteau in English meant a ‘suitcase to carry coats.’
A suitcase has two sides linked by a hinge, like Caroll’s inventions.
In French, that suitcase meaning is rather rare/specialized and a portemanteau
is first a coat hanger or a coat stand.

I strongly suspect that ai is going to replace most contributors in the somewhat
near future. With just someone overseeing it. So perhaps time for a new boredom
fighter is near.

I think we are a long way from AI getting a sealed set from a shelf, opening
it, building the set according to the instructions, figuring out what pieces
are extras, scanning sticker sheets, building minifigures according to BLs rigorous
standards and taking photos of them, etc., etc. Sloppy data comes from AI. Real
world data comes from contributors.

I don't know what would be the purpose for this AI investment. The majority
of what we do is independently rediscovering things that LEGO already knew.
They can't be bothered just to share that information. Why would they pay
for an expensive computer program to rediscover it?

Lol. The existing models can already do this. There is no "paying" for
anything. It would just be integration to either the site or a third party app.
People are literally working on this now.
The echo chamber on this board amongst the "club" blows my mind sometimes.
Whaaaaaat? I hereby certify "Le Club de la Moutarde" hasn't anything
to do about this!
Must be some pizza gang members propaganda - again, humpppf.

I have a high school friend who is an academic and recently went to a symposium
on AI. We had already talked about where everything might be going. He reported
back that while this has been the most public and most marketable advance in
AI with the ChatGPT and consumer drawing programs, it is the latest in a long
string of advances that were called AI. And while every advance is a genuine
advance, there is no parabolic curve like they are making the public think.
The newest advance is already plateauing in terms of what can be done with it.
There are people looking for the next advance and we don't know when that
will start bearing fruit, but we are not in an avalanche now.
I am wholeheartedly hoping for and looking forward to the time when a robot will
drive me where I want to go and I can just read or watch a movie. Maybe I don't
even OWN a car anymore because the robotaxi is so responsive and reliable. Maybe
when you want to go on a road trip, your regular robotaxi service provides a
robot-RV with a couple beds and a big TV and a bathroom. I'm all in. But
website are still having me prove I am a human mainly by identifying sidewalks,
bicycles, and bridges and when it is time for a robot to drive me to work, they're
gonna need to pass that test.

What we know is that TLG already has all of the data we need. There is no need
for us to do anything other than get it from them. Yet, TLG are reluctant to
let us get our hands on it because it is highly competitive information and they
do not want any of it released ahead of worldwide release. There is no need for
humans or AI to do anything more after TLG themselves have already designed the
sets, know all of the colors, know all of the quantities, know how much parts
are overdosed in sets (the extras), know where different alternate parts are
used in different production runs and regions, etc., etc.
What all of us do here is put the picture back together for something that had
a picture that was unfortunately torn apart and sent to the store for someone
to buy. If we could get TLG to just give us the original picture, there would
be no need for anything other than getting some nice images from people.
Cheers,
Randy

I spend a couple hours this morning cleaning up compression noise on renders
to upload to Bricklink. LEGO made the pictures and they obviously made them
in higher resolution. They could buy an expensive computer program to go in
and clean up the noise. That would be great. Of course, they could just give
us the good ones that they already have.

Well, if we were asking them for higher resolution images, we should also instruct
them how to correctly light a rendered object.
Where are you scraping them from? Some are better than others.
Where are you scraping them from? Some are better than others.
I tab them from ICT or I just enter the PCC in a save link to where all the 192x192

Ah, I believe the 250x250 ones are slightly better to work on. Rebrickable and
Brickset have those.

I went over and got one of those. It is a little bigger. It will be easier
with the cropping and the image will look a little better, but I don't detect
any less compression noise. It'll be just as much work. How big is the
original?

The 250x250 renders from Rebrickable are just the standard 192x192 renders, but
enlarged. We receive those from new users once in a while and always have to
tell them they can't be accepted because they are blurry.

What a mess! I just checked a couple of them and they don't appear to be
just resized. They are also different images.
The renders under the lod5photo URL are being updated all the time. So the current
render from that source might differ from the render that Rebrickable saved some
time ago.
In any case, there is no official source (that I know of) for 250x250 images.
Thanks for the comparison, seems they do them too dark...
Oh, don't get me wrong! The 360 is nice and all. It's just that the photos
are saved and lit poorly. (Again) It's frustrating for someone like me who
thinks everything should be perfect and beautiful.

AI will most likely never take away this hobby.
