I've had a buyer potentially interested in 2 large sets I'm selling.
He asked for pictures. So, I went ahead, checked the inventory once again, took
several pictures, sent to him, unlisted the two items he was interested in (to
give him first dibs). It's been 4 days now and he has not even acknowledged
receipt of the pictures and what his intentions are. Be nice to people they said,
what did I get? I waisted 2 hours and now nothing. Yes, it's part of the
business/hobby, but next time someone asks for pictures well ... we'll see.

in general (not always) the buyers who ask for pictures are some of the least
likely to ever buy anything.

Thank you. I've learned my lesson. He haggled, wanted a discount if he bought
both items ... etc etc. Ah well. Next time I'll ask for a deposit, and a
restocking fee LOL

“Sock it to em’” people need to stop just wasting other people’s time. Had a
buyer ask if I did local pickup, set up and was ready to drive 3 hours to deliver(had
to go to town anyway ) replied to message andddd… “No response your honour.”

buyer asked if they could do a local pick-up & you got mad because they didn't
respond after you prepped yourself to deliver it 3 hours away....?

maybe when they asked to do a local pick-up, they meant pick-up.. not delivery
by you.....
but who knows.

You're not wrong. I think just about everyone who has asked for photos hasn't
bought.

if you drove past a car lot, seen a red corvette & asked for more details & pics,
then a few days later you drove by the car lot to see it again & it was gone,
would you assume someone else bought it & it was no longer available?

what did you get...?

you got to be a Professional Business Owner who does their job without complaini....

... oh wait.

Yeah, that's why I recommend (almost) never doing pictures.

Yeah, that's why I recommend (almost) never doing pictures.

someone asked me for pics of a boba fett torso with no response. 2 weeks later
they ordered $65.00 worth of stuff including said torso.

it all depends on the attitude of the seller involved in the situation & how
they approach it.

if you hate doing something ( taking pics ) it will reflect in how you respond
to the request.

If someone asks for pictures, ask them if there is any particular aspect they
want to see in a picture. If they don't respond, no picture. If they send
a long list, no pictures. If they seem genuine, send a couple.

Bear in mind if they have asked you, they gave probably also asked 10 other sellers
the same thing.

I wouldn't reserve sets for a buyer unless they were known to me. And definitely
not unlist them, as nobody can buy them then.

Don't get upset but take positive lessons from this experience.
TBH, you made some mistakes or some wrong assumptions here.

I've had a buyer potentially interested in 2 large sets I'm selling.
He asked for pictures. So, I went ahead, checked the inventory once again, took
several pictures, sent to him, unlisted the two items he was interested in (to
give him first dibs).

I don't always take pictures of whatever item a buyer asks.
If the set include instructions or box, I take photos, upload it on imgur.com
and send a link. The buyer may not order this item, but I already created a link
in hand to send to a next user should he wants photos. This is much easier than
attaching photos one by one.
You can also add the link to the comment section, or to the remark section (to
be accessible by only you).

I would not reserve an item for a buyer who asks for a photo, specially if he
did not ask that

It's been 4 days now and he has not even acknowledged
receipt of the pictures

I would not need that as a seller and I don't need that. As a buyer, I won't
acknowledge a seller who sends me photos that i received them.
If it helps you, I thank you on behalf of this buyer.

and what his intentions are. Be nice to people they said,

an experience

Some buyers may not trust your store and the way you describe the condition.
It can help to take photos of a few sets with their description, as an example
(in your ) and mention this in your terms. Then buyers can better understand
what you mean by "parts in good condition", "the print on the part
X mildly faded",...

Unfortunately its easy to assume that someone’s apparent interest matches that
of our own ‘serious’ interest if we ourselves were to ask similar questions of
a seller. Therefore I would never hold stock just for someone asking for photos.
I would hold stock if they specifically requested me to do so as I want to be
helpful wherever I can but then I might look upon their account very differently
if I feel I’m being messed around

That said my approach to these questions is now pretty much to advise the buyer
that whilst the box is in great condition they need to keep in mind that however
carefully we pack there is no guarantee it will reach them in the same perfect
condition as any photos taken. I also advise them that we primarily sell our
sealed sets to those just wanting the actual all important contents and so for
hardcore collectors wanting a box devoid of any minor scuffs, scratches or imperfections
I simply advise them that we cannot guarantee that level of service as to do
so might only risk leaving them disappointed!

To put it simply I’m quite happy to bat away this business and give it to other
sellers because if the whole transaction hinges on the condition of the outer
box alone then that makes the outcome of the transaction all the more risky whilst
devoiding the all-important content value in the process!

Sometimes buyers have responded back saying they intend to open the box and they’re
not collectors but just want to see photos to show its been well kept and not
a mangled mess to begin with and at that point they are usually serious buyers
and I send them photos and those transactions have gone through smoothly

Maybe make some pictures of the sets after you bought them, and just before you
put them in your stock before uploading. Save those pictures for future reference.
saves a lot of hassle.

Have a nice day!

Did you unlist the items completely or did you reserve them for the potential
buyer who asked for pictures? If you want to give someone first dibs, do the
latter. But I personally wouldn't do that just because someone asked for
pictures.

I just had 2 more of such requests last night. I do not send pictures, and this
is stated in my terms. I found (20 years of experience), that only a small fraction
of these requests actually end ups in sales. Overall, it is not worth the time
to make and send pictures for these requests. In addition, I have to make sure
to include a piece of paper with my name and date in it, so the pictures are
not used to scam others on other websites.
I do understand that the condition of a box is important, and pictures would
help, but again, not worth it on average. I know of a few stores that have a
policy clause that I have considered: When asking for pictures, tell them it
is $10 per picture, and if they buy the set, you'll give them the money back
as a discount on the set. So, they can place an order for pictures only (so Bricklink
still gets the fee), and if they buy the set you can discount. I am considering
something like that, but in stead of giving them a full discount, they only get
half the picture money as a discount. After all, it is still effort to take pictures
and send them, even if they buy the set in the end.
My advice, do not send pictures, and state this clearly in your terms (so you
can refer them to your terms if someone asks for pictures), but describe the
sets well in your store. And if you send pictures, make sure you include a date
and name prominently, so you are not aiding scammers by providing them pictures
they will claim as their own to scam others into paying them for sets they do
not have.

There's one thing everyone sending photos should remember about and that
is making sure that the photos can't be reused. Facebook and other marketplaces
are full of "good deals" and many of them have loads of good photos.
