I am a British member and have been buying and selling on Bricklink for many
years. Since the UK came out of the EU there seems to be a new policy here on
Bricklink where every purchase is automatically charged a VAT fee. On top of
this British buyers get charged VAT and customs fees from our Customs as well.
So we are paying VAT twice! Surely this isnt right? I know for example that if
non US citizens buy goods in the US they do not have to pay VAT so why isnt this
the case for EU as well? Am I missing something?

Hi,

What you’re paying to BrickLink is the UK import VAT (levied by the UK government,
and it’s the UK government that made laws to make BrickLink responsible for directly
collecting it for olders below £135).

You shouldn’t have to pay a second time at reception.  The seller should have
sent the VAT receipt (where it’s said that BL already collected the VAT) with
the package and the postal or delivery services or Customs should have seen that.

You should have received the VAT receipt from BL too.
I don’t know the UK procedure in case of double taxation, try to talk to the
postal or delivery services or HM Customs.

As for other countries:

There’s a similar law in EU: we have to pay our country’s import VAT to BrickLink
for orders from outside EU below €150.
The double-taxation happens more often here because the information has to be
sent electronically and not all sellers do it.
The correction procedure here should be that BL refunds the VAT it collected…
but BL doesn’t do that.

There’s also a similar law in Norway (VAT, below the equivalent to €150) and
in Australia (GST, below AU$1,000).

And there’s a similar law for the USA too: BL has to collect sales tax for many
US states.  But as it’s “local” (not federal), this is not checked at customs.

If you have access to the email your account was created with then search for
a Bricklink email containing a file, it can be used to restore your old account.

If the sellers includes the correct paperwork you should only need to pay VAT
once when importing, and not pay the collection fee and further VAT. I buy a
fair bit from China and occasionally from the US (not on BL) and not had a problem.
But I've not bought anything internationally on bricklink for a while, as
even with one lot of VAT it is rarely worth it any more.
