I was looking at this figure

Minifigures: Castle
and couldn't figure out why it has an A in the part number and
was wondering if anyone can spot anything I'm missing. There isn't a
cas518 or cas518b and it isn't an alternate. So before I request its number
to be changed I just wanted to see if I'm missing anything obvious.

My hypothesis:

There must have been a cas518.
But then it was found that the inventory was wrong (according to the instructions,
not to the parts).
So cas518a was created.
And cas518 marked for deletion.
And then, when it was not wound anywhere any more, cas518 was deleted.
And now only remains cas518a.

Don’t know if cas518 should be renamed cas518 now.  Doesn’t seem very useful.

That's what I thought but then I remembered they said they couldn't actually

We can (again), but cas518 was "deleted" (merged) back in 2018.
You have to search in the catalog change log to find it:

Ah sorry, maybe I should have mentioned that we are told not use item numbers
again that were merged into another entry (because of spaghetti code etc.). So
the a is here to stay.
