| I'm wondering what kind of item image is preferred in the catalog - a 3d
render or a photograph? Especially for animals, minifigures and characters.
I have some animals from the Friends line, that have only 3d renders in the catalog.
I can take good quality photos but are they really needed if there are renders
available?

| If you're willing to contribute them, more images is always better. They
may not replace the default image for the part but they will be featured in the
image gallery for the part/figure.

High-quality photos are always appreciated. FYI: renders are used as the main
image (as a general standard) when a part comes in many different colors for
consistency's sake. Photos can be used as an Additional image. For decorated
items and unique parts, photos are preferred.
Be sure to use a white background and crop the images very closely. The thumbnail
images are generated from the large image you upload so it's necessary.

As far as I know, for printed parts (and most animals and figures are printed)
good quality photos are always preferred.

Don't know about needed, but often preferred. That said, I'm sure there
are establish guidelines for what the cat-folks will use.
Digital renders (especially 3D) do just fine for common parts... In fact, can
be more helpful, imo. For many of the other items of the catalog, e.g. the minifigure
and it’s constituent parts “good quality photos” are the way to go.
Btw, here’s a little more on the subject: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1272554
