other Lego sites. I looked again, recalculated and rebuild my set. Finally
realized: I was wrong. My fault, the point is yours. Thank you.

|
| Hi,
Lately I have inventoried some DUPLO sets. The hardest bit about them are the
minifigs. They always need to be searched for manually. What I usually do is
use Brickset to find an already inventoried set with the same minifig, and then
check that set on BrickLink.
Since DUPLO minifigs are single piece items I see no reason why they can't
have an Element ID / PCC code (other than of course technical reasons in the
BrickLink systems).
I think this would be a nice addition, also enabling links from systems using
the LEGO element ID back to BrickLink.
Kind regards,
Kars.

Does your copy of instructions differ at all from the ones published online at
Brickfactory or Lego Customer Service?
Russell
|
Hi,
My copy looks to be the same as the one at Brickfactory.
So this set seems to contain either:
- 4x Black x88 or
- 2x Black x88 and 2x Red X37
Hence the inventory change request.

Without having done a complete study, your proposition regarding rubber bands
seems correct. Apparently, for the ball to open up to become a fighting machine,
the head has to move toward the inside slightly. The larger (i.e. weaker) red
rubber bands help that, and also there is an assembly of pieces underneath where
the head is attached that is removed in the improved version., which would allow
the head to bend in even further. This is one of the few cases where I have seen
Lego *remove* parts during a redesign. Usually they are adding to the build to
strengthen such and such.
Anyhow, this involves more than just the rubber bands, and we're going to
have to use Alternates to reflect both versions of the set. I think most of the
parts in question are already in the Extras section, so it may just need a bit
of reorganization.
Here are scans of the 2 versions, which show the parts other than the rubber
bands. If anyone knows of other differences (besides the red rubber bands and
the assembly under the neck), please speak up.
|
OK, I have approved all your requests and made adjustments for the non rubber
band parts. Please check to see that your set lines up with the parts in the
Regular Items section.
Also, I noticed that the two smallest types of rubber bands shown in the instructions
are of different thicknesses, and the one currently termed "Extra Small" seems
the same size as (or even larger than) the ones currently termed "Small". Would
you please check the rubber bands that came in your set? The instruction pages
are 42 and 46/70.

This set comes with wagon wheels, not motor wheels.
|
Is it true that motor wheels always came with the rubber rim pre-assembled?
I remember having wheels with the train engine on them, and at the time I did
not know that there were other train wheels with a wagon on them. I always thought
the engine symbol stood for "train", but apparently it meant "this one has a
rubber rim, make sure these ones are used with the motor".
|
No, it means "I have a different shape than the other one!"
|
I don't perceive any difference in shape, but I'm only looking at the
catalog images and I don't have a physical wagon wheel to compare to the
engine type. Where is the shape different?
|
has a straight hub
has a beveled hub
|
Isn't this difference, though, based entirely on one having to hold (and
make space for) a rubber rim, and the other not using the rim? In other words,
the beveled wheel was always used with the rim, and the straight one never had
the rim.
|
That is correct, and the beveled form is not to make space for the rim, it is
to avoid it slips off, as when 'running' it generates centrifugal force
and so on a straight wheel the rim slips off, it does not on the beveled version.
The rims are obviously needed to create traction clutch when running with a motor,
on a 'push' train this was not needed/not the case, so the OP is most
likely right
|
The reason I am poking for information on this is that I believe it would be
best, when we start making adjustments to the way early wheels are handled in
inventories, that the engine wheel with rim assembly:
|
As far as I can remember, the rims where not factory placed on the wheels (neither
in the 12V series btw), probably because they would start to stretch right from
the start, some boxes show them as a seperate item in the displayed parts list
if I recall well (would need to check to make sure).
| ...be listed in the Regular Items section
|
please not...
| similar to these wheels:
...which always came assembled, and were considered to be a single part by TLG
at the time.
|
Yes correct but then in the '80 and even in the '90 some assemblies where
regular as well, but never supported by the site 'inventory' wise:
Change made to reflect reality based on MISB set
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp?itemType=S&itemNo=1760-1&viewDate=Y&viewStatus=1

Sure the change I made created 'inconsistancy', but it created a precendent
with the intend to reflect more reality in inventories, while now it's just
'consistent', fact is, LEGO has not always been consistant, so why should
we? Let inventories reflect reality, period.
|
The overall idea has always been to represent reality, but there were exceptions
made in the past that cannot be undone overnight. We are working on it, and at
some point I expect these wheels will be listed as you found them in your sealed
set.

The stockroom is usually for things that you don't want to sell. If you want
to allow someone to look at the stockroom, why not move it to your store and
they can look normally.
Alternatively, download your inventory, including stockroom, at http://www.bricklink.com/invExcel.asp

make space for) a rubber rim, and the other not using the rim? In other words,
the beveled wheel was always used with the rim, and the straight one never had
the rim.
The reason I am poking for information on this is that I believe it would be
best, when we start making adjustments to the way early wheels are handled in
inventories, that the engine wheel with rim assembly:
...be listed in the Regular Items section, similar to these wheels:
...which always came assembled, and were considered to be a single part by TLG
at the time.

|
The reason why a particular version of hook is used in an old inventory like
this one is because of the instructions. It's the same with doors, signs,
trees, etc.
Sometimes a part variation was split after an inventory was submitted and the
most common variant (as perceived at the time) was assigned to the original entry.
So in those cases, an inventory may end up in conflict with the instructions.
But by and large, the instructions were *the* source for older inventories, not
actual set contents.
It is quite likely that many sets came with both variants, but I don't feel
comfortable adding variants indiscriminately to inventories, though. Please only
add them if you are reasonably sure your source is original.
But the question of source begs the question - why retain a variant (in this
case the right hook) if the source is unreliable?

| Thank you for the link. Those clearly indicate that it is the Buyer who should
change the status to Completed.
I share Marc's reasons for having it this way. I will mark an order received,
but not completed, until I've finished checking and storing it. When a Seller
comes along and changes it to completed for me, it is annoying. Also, if I have
contacted the Seller about the order, seeing it still at received might give
me an indication that the Seller did not receive my message.
Even though I don't have a PayPal account, I am aware of the new length of
time allowed for filing a dispute. This is another factor that must be considered
before a Seller marks an order Complete. As I understand it, a PayPal Buyer
has a longer time to verify a package before notifying the Seller about a problem.
I would say that since BrickLink seems to still allow a Seller to mark an order
Completed, I would not be so annoyed if they choose to do it just before the
order is about to be purged. Although, I think if I were a Seller, I would want
to have some idea of the number of Buyers who don't fulfill their obligations.

Buyer:
Pay for an Order - Instructions on where to send payment are located on the invoice

payment status to "Paid". The myBrickLink action item includes orders where the
order status is Ready, order has been invoiced and payment status is none.
Change Order Status to Completed - When you have verified the contents of your
package and consider the order completed. You can also change order status to
Received when you have received your package (but have not yet verified its contents
or there is a problem). The option to change order status on your Orders Placed
page appears when order has status of Shipped or Received. The myBrickLink action
item includes orders you placed where the order status is Shipped or Received.
Post Feedback (optional) - Post Feedback to your seller when you receive your
items. The myBrickLink action item includes orders you placed where the order
status is Completed and you have not yet posted feedback.

| No, for obvious reasons.
But maybe there should be a percentage of completed orders on a buyers feedback.
If they get lots of orders that they cannot be bothered to mark received / completed,
then maybe sellers should start insisting on tracking for those orders, since
so many to that particular buyer do not get received or completed
Also it would be good if BL didn't purge any non-completed orders, as they
are by definition not complete yet. Although saying that, it would be good if
they didn't purge any orders.

If they had this rule, back when I was placing a LOT of orders at the same time
(often across multiple sellers), it would have saved me a LOT of money.
Often my building plans would change, after ordering the parts, but before receiving
the parts. So if I had been forced to spread those orders out, over more time,
I would have spent less money.
So based on how this rule would have benefited my finances, I considered voting
Yes.
But then I started thinking about the effect it would have had on my creativity.
I think it would have frustrated the creative part of my brain, not being able
to order the parts it thought it needed to build what it was imagining.
So in the end, I voted no.

You're right
But I do not want to annoy my buyers. Allthough in one order I did just that.
We had a load of emails back and forth (regarding the condition of parts - it
was a good conversation) and once my buyer got hit order - no communication/no
feedback at all
I'd _really_ like to know if he is pleased with his parts, so I can sell
similar parts in the same condition on BL
I've send him two emails, no response
Such is selling on BL I guess
Many thanks for your reply

| When two people expect different results from a process, it can be frustrating
for both. But everything else being equal, I would say that doing nothing is
less annoying than doing something.
What do I mean?
Some of the orders that I place on BrickLink are for parts that I intend to resell
in my BrickLink store or elsewhere. I use that Completed status to mean that
I have reviewed the order and "put it away" -- added it to my stock and listed
it for sale.
If a seller changes the status to Completed, it messes that process up for me.
I do realize that this is my issue, and I can simply find a different way to
keep track. But having a seller change the status to Completed is an action that
they are taking, which happens to cause me some small grief. The reverse situation,
where a buyer does NOT set the status to Completed, can equally cause some small
grief to a seller who depends on that status, but in that case it seems less
annoying to me because it is the *absence* of action that causes it.
Which is a long way of saying: sellers, please do not set the order status to
Complete. Let your buyers do that.

| I too have many orders never changed from shipped to received or completed by
the buyers. I set them to completed when they are 1 month old for European orders
and after 2 months for world wide orders. And then file them. I too was a little
annoyed when I was a new seller that buyers did not take the time to finish the
transaction, but have stopped letting it affect me. When it comes to FB I always
post FB (whenorder is apid) on buyers who do the same. If repeat buyers don't
give FB i do not either.

That would mean a regular buyer has to wait for his order to arrive before making

orders in a week.
I also don't want to burden buyers with having to do this, it is another
thing that you just don't have to do as a buyer on-line elsewhere... you
buy, pay, get stuff, that's it. Anything else is optional like FB, etc.
We have thousands of orders, many purged, where the status never got beyond shipped.
I personally have no problem with that.

Ole,
I see your point, but I also agree with Robert. This seems to only bug the seller.
Another way to look at it is if you haven't heard back from the buyer about
the order, then more than likely they received the order and were satisfied enough
to not be bothered with following up with you or the order status.
As others have said, we all get these, and I must confess that sometimes it takes
me a while to change the status to completed, but I change it to received as
soon as possible. Many times, I get orders and I don't get around to checking
the contents for days or weeks at a time, as I only take out what I need and
deal with the rest (filler items) at a later point. I know, my personal Lego
collection needs to be sorted, but I lack the space at the moment. I hope this
changes within the next year, but now it's not a high priority. Sorry, got
off the track.

It won't have much effect - the language just needs to be clearer. The policy
will continue to require only those pieces necessary to build the set.

There was an unwritten exception for this?

From Apr 6, 2012 we have these examples:
...and there are 4 more, all small sets. But then we have hundreds of them changed
over to sprues by Admin Dan on Feb 24, 2007.
I'm not 100% for following Dan's example in every situation (everybody
ends up out on a limb at one point or another), but in this case it became a
well-established policy and it points in the same general direction that inventory
policy is already headed, i.e. to represent the original (new) condition of sets
more closely.
I don't remember anything being said in 2012 about an unwritten exception.
Obviously the state of the 6 small inventories was intentional, so we can't
claim this was just an oversight. But I don't see a reason for the exception.
Can anybody explain why these sets are different than all the rest?

The 'on sprue' was usefull because of part out's of new sets, if
3 where regular and 1 was extra, it would cause a mess for sellers on partouts,
for used sets it was less an issue if one flower was missing (even if it was
regular), as most buyers would most likely not make an issue out of it.
For the CMF's (and possibly other small sets) it's a bit more of a problem,
as there are high detailed pictures showing 3 flowers, the chances for partouts
where/are smaller, as either the baggie would be sold 'complete', either
the fig would be sold as a complete fig, leaving almost no other parts in most
cases (except some small accessoires) and easier to have control (compared to
large sets) on a partout. I don't remember the exact reason why the smaller
sets had inventories like that, but it was an unwritten and deliberate 'exception'
on the CMF's in the first place, it was discussed back then when other people
tried to file inventory changes, I'm not sure it was the right course of
action, as indeed it removed the consistancy on these flowers, BUT the reasoning
was at the same time as the reasoning for the 'knives' on sprue, as in
most cases only one was used and the second was extra...
A bit complicated, and an eternal issue when selling 'new' compared
to selling 'used', but the priority was given to 'used' (in the
long run) with the intend to not force sellers of 'used' sets to have
to add 'spares' that are not part of the actual build and therefor are
not required to consider a set 'complete' (reason why extra knives and
brickseperators got moved to 'extra', and why on small CMF sets the 1
flower was put as an extra).
|

I am *so* glad you have decided to do this. Who wants to buy a set as New and
Complete when one of the flowers is missing? (Or one of the keys in an original
New HP set, as I recall the discussion long ago before the definition somehow
morphed.)

| As it has been discussed here:
http://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=182644
when 7727 appeared (1983), it was a standard to include a conducting rail curved,
interference-free (part id 3241c) in 12V Train sets of that period.
The pictures below, founded in the web, can show this fact (the 3241c can be
recognized on the bottom).
As far as the 2731a Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
is concerned, it was an improvement of 3241c and probably started to appear in
1985 in sets 7745 and 7735, not before, so it could not be included in 7727 which
was produced until 1984.

| Sorry for hijacking this thread, but can you tell which type of conducting rail
straight are included in your sealed set?
Conducting rail straight with connection holes (part id 3242) or conducting rail
straight without connection holes (part id 3242c)?
Another question: I think that in your set a catalogue was also included, can
you tell the year of the catalogue?
Thanks!

|

I was checking through eBay's listing rules and came across this interesting
little blurb clearly noting what eBay thinks and does about customs fraud. From
a section of eBay's Help Desk dealing with "encouraging illegal activity":
"Policy Overview
For a safer buying and selling experience on eBay, we don't allow selling
or linking to items that encourage, promote, facilitate, or instruct others to
engage in illegal activity.
We also don't allow buyers to ask sellers to break any laws. For example,
buyers can't ask sellers to falsify customs declarations or have an item
marked as "gift" in order to avoid customs fees.
...
Reporting a violation
If you find a listing that encourages illegal activity, you can report it.
If you sold an item and your buyer asks you to commit customs fraud, you can
report it."
(with the words in bold being an actual link to report such things to eBay).
See:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/encouraging-illegal-activity.html
I don't see why BrickLink cannot have a similar policy.

I have supported that idea for years. BL will not do it. It is a black mark
on BL for being a part of customs fraud. Everyone that asked me to do this,
asked through the BL message system, so they have a record if they cared to look.
I consider BL a partner in attempted fraud for doing nothing about fraud for
so many years. It leaves the problem for sellers to deal with and they have
enough headaches as it is. Also an advantage is given to those sellers that
do this.
Could it be profits that motivates BL's lack of genuine concern?
Foster, this is the one thing we see eye to eye on. Scary is it not?

The reporting of it is no good if nothing is done. We had this happen two years
ago. A buyer in the UK asked us to change the customs form. We said no. Upon
receiving the package he first wrote us a nasty letter and then gave us a negative.
He was reported to ebay with his e-mails to us. I don't know if ebay did
anything to him but they sure would not remove our negative from him.

Since the original inventory was done from "Parts List" and not "Sealed Set Contents",
I would change the Regular entry to be the one you found instead of adding an
Alternate.
Also, could you make sure that the Bright Light Orange in the set are
not [p=76371] instead.
Cheers,
Randy
|
The Duplo 1 x 2 x 2 bricks are still undergoing a change. The rarer colors oddly
enough are still without the tube. See my new inventory here:
...and others approved in 2015. I would have expected the reverse, but this is
what we are finding in sets. Both versions of the brick are on the watchlist
for the moment.
|
Just checked, my 2015 set has in Bright Light Orange.
I was not aware of these two molds for these type of bricks, so because of this
I also rechecked the set. It turns out the White ones in my set are
old style and the Red ones are new style. However, LEGO customer support lists
[p=76371] for White. Should I add them as an Alternate, or change it?
| As for the wrench, I'll have to pull out some sets and have a look.
|
The instructions and the box picture show (old style). LEGO customer
support lists the new one.
|
Please note that the Lego customer service only lists "replacement" parts, which
is not necessarily what was in a set when it was produced.

| As it has been discussed here:
http://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=196663
almost surely, as it happened to the 7740, the 7730 appeared at least at first
(1980) with 16 curved rails 3241b without connection holes.
Almost surely the evolution of the track was the same too, i.e. in the mid-late
production runs (1981-1982) the 16 curved rails 3241b without connection holes
were substituted by 15 curved rails 3241 with connection holes + 1 curved rail
3241c interference-free + 1 Paper, Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail
- 117983 . (Please look at the picture below founded in the web: on the bottom
we can clearly recognize the Paper, Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail
- 117983)
As far as the 2731a Conducting Rail Curved with Connection Wire and Short Connector
is concerned, as it has been discussed here:
http://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=182644
just because the 7730 was produced until 1982 and not until 1984, the chance
that this part was in the set is still slighter. (2731a was an improvement of
3241c and probably appeared in 1985, not before).

Thanks to both of you for the valued input. I have approved the changes becuase
they make a definite improvement. There is still some uncertainty as to how many
of the connecting rails would have been included, as well as what kind of interference
suppression rail (if any), but our alternate system does handle this rather well,
as the Qty of each side of the equation is in practice undefined in our inventories.
I look forward to similar requests in the future.
