In the case of variants, we can't depend on instructions. Does anyone have

It's not so much that you are getting old but the debate is getting old.
Many things have been debated regularly every 6-12 months and none more than
weights. It has been a constant in my 10 years here! It is one of the issues
that makes me long for post retention of longer than 6 months, which is also
a regular suggestion.

Where do you know that it is off by default?
|
If a seller is new I usually just ask them to turn the weights on, rather than
quickly deciding to not purchase from them.
In one such discussion the seller did not know how to turn the weights on.
Since I am not a seller, I did not know either.
So I referred the seller to this forum to ask how to enable weights.
It was this conversation where I concluded that the default was off.

Further, whenever a seller decides to turn off this feature, display a message
telling them that this makes it hard for buyers to estimate shipping, and it
is recommended that they leave the weights turned on.
Maybe even tell them that many buyers will choose to NOT buy from them, and instead
choose a seller that has the weights turned on.
I know that I have selected "empty cart" instead of checking out, at the point
I was about the check out, for at least 2 sellers in the last two days, due to
no weights in shopping cart.
I have read the reasons for having weights off. I still don't think it is
necessary (or of benefit) to not display the weights. There are better solutions
to every reason I have seen, for not showing weights.
Buyers are being asked to estimate the shipping cost, close enough to commit
to the order.
Not providing the buyers with the available information to do this estimate is
wrong.
Maybe implement a policy that allows buyers to cancel any order placed where
weights were not visible in the shopping cart without risk of NPB.
This will give sellers more incentive to just make the weights visible.
|
|
I recall having to manually enable it. I definitely never disabled it. Maybe
it has changed at some point already.

Same here, in fact a customer asked me why I didn't have it active, I then
found the forum and was kindly pointed in the right direction to activate it!

A shop with it disabled is most likely a shop I won't bother with, or buy
bare minimum from. So the seller lose potential money from me by having it off.

|
I checked one and it has the new mold number. Unfortunately at the moment I can't
compare it to an old piece to see if there are any differences.
|
I just compared the two molds. As you can see in the attached picture, the two
hollow outer studs have the same thickness all the way to the bottom in the old
mold 2341 (the light bluish gray part). In the new mold 18759 (the white part)
there is a ridge and they are thinner at the top.
|
Those ridges in the new hollow outer studs are for keeping bars that are placed
into them at a standard height with similar hollow studs on other inverted slopes.
That would be a functional difference. Could you submit this new part to the
catalog so that we can get the new sets inventoried with the right part?
Cheers,
Randy
|
Should they be added as a new part? I don't see seperate entries for other
inverted slopes with these ridges in the hollow studs like 3660 and 3665. Unless
you also want to add those as new parts.
|
The 3660 and 3665 have at least three different versions of the hollow stud.
The first was very narrow, narrower even then the old hollow stud guage:
* | | 3614a Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Tow Ball with Round Hole (Homemaker Figure / Maxifigure Hand) Parts: Plate, Round |
The second could hold a minifig utensil, and the third (as Randy has observed)
limits the insertion depth of a utensil.

That would be a functional difference. Could you submit this new part to the
catalog so that we can get the new sets inventoried with the right part?
Cheers,
Randy

* Change 2 Part Red 3001 Brick 2 x 4 {match ID 0 to 7}
Comments from Submitter:
Black and red bricks 2 x 4 no. 3001 (with a central stud cross support) are included in my 7740 that I have owned since 1984 (so a late version), but in the first production runs the black and red bricks 2 x 4 were without cross supports (no. 3001old).

I just compared the two molds. As you can see in the attached picture, the two
hollow outer studs have the same thickness all the way to the bottom in the old
mold 2341 (the light bluish gray part). In the new mold 18759 (the white part)
there is a ridge and they are thinner at the top.

Sets that I parted out all had 6157 and 14520. I contacted the person who inventoried this set asking to confirm if the variants in the inventory are correct but I did not get a reply. I still don't see why you would need a special option to turn the feature
on or off.
There is an existing feature that allows you to be notified when an item becomes
available in the quantity and price that you want.
Your comment that If I got a notification every time a part on my wanted
list changed prices, my phone would blow up. suggests that you have not
set up your wanted list(s) properly.
If your phone was going off that often, it would indicate that a lot of parts
you, not the system, but you, presumably wanted to buy at that price, at the
time you set up your wanted list, you have no intention of buying at that time.
Perhaps you should not have selected "email me when this item becomes available"
The proposed system of informing people of newer, lower prices on their wanted
list, would work just fine without an on/off toggle switch

Maybe it could be optional for every wanted list item.
Except for temporary use, I only add expensive items to my wanted list. I have
BL notify me via e-mail when something pops up so I can pick up the best deals

miss a lot of them because the prices change.

That's exactly why I prefer not having a chatroom. Good discussions just
become lost in a chatroom, even if they are archived. It's nice being able
to see the discussions I've missed.
Associating each user with their BrickLink ID is definitely important, though.
There may be some way to setup an IRC channel so that a moderator has to receive

be an arduous task and would discourage new members from joining the chat.

There are at least on unofficial IRC channel for BrickLink.
We are only a few in there right now.
Link in my "me" page if you like to check it out.
It wold be easy to set up a "Mibbit" client and link it to any IRC channel they
want without any security issue.
That way people that don't normally use IRC can join in without downloading
and installing anything.
Have a nice day.

I've spent plenty of time in chatrooms before. I know what they're like.
I'm just saying my preference is the forum. I like to have the opportunity

Anyway, I've always wondered why there isn't a separately hosted IRC

I'm surprised there's not an unofficial one at least.

A few people set them up and even advertised them, but the only way to tell of
them was through the forum and you know how posts can get out of control and
bring things 8 pages down.
The other thing was integration with your ID so you know who you were talking

lol, way to weight your opinion as informative.
I didn't get to live in the 60's, but I prefer living now to living in
the 60's
hard to follow - that was kind of the point of chat, off the record spur of the
moment talk.
It made the FORUM easier to follow because there were a lot less posts there
and the posts there
There were a lot of people that were regulars in chat the hardly posted in the
forum, for the most part they were two different crowds
the ONLY downside was the security problems that arose from it (except for maybe
the mods that had to spend time in there to monitor things)
That was actually a plus, I think the strong mod presence in the chat room kept
the conversation positive and prevented a lot of member bashing that happens
in the forum.

I agree that it seems the MOC shop was just a business decision. The dumb thing
is that it's probably done more harm than good. I would be surprised if they
haven't spent more money developing it than what they've earned from
it so far. I really don't see why they think there would be a lot of people
lining up to buy someone else's creation. Anyone who knows what a MOC is
is probably more interested in creating their own than following someone else's
instructions. If they wanted to target kids, they should have picked a better
name.
I have no idea who Jung-Ju Kim is. I've only seen two or three staff members
on the forum (unless inventory admins count), and none of them have seemed to
be in touch with the community.

place recently, and they are tested and they work.
A lot of people want chat to come back, and getting rid of all signs of chat

Yes,
They really need this.
IF BL had a competitor, all other things equal, but the competitor had this feature,
I would use the competitor.
I have this thought almost every time I am shopping on BL.
However,
Not having this feature has allowed me to exercise my memory skills more often,
as I try to remember the item number (in my head) as I navigate back to the catalog.
I suppose this is good exercise for my brain.

It's an option that sellers can choose to enable or disable for their stores.

Cool, I didn't know that. Where's the option located?

http://www.bricklink.com/pref_seller.asp
under "My Inventory Options:"
uncheck "Link price to price guide detail on each item for sale"

It doesn't. It allows the seller to have a link to the price guide, from
the inventory view (not from within the store).
There isn't an option for what the original post was describing.

it would be very helpful if there would be a link directly to the catalog entry
of an item/set when browsing an item/set in any store. This way, you don't
need to go all the way back to the catalog page and manually search for it or
browse your way to the entry.
As far as I know this is now not possible (or I have completely missed it for
years).
|
It's an option that sellers can choose to enable or disable for their stores.
|
Cool, I didn't know that. Where's the option located?
| Most sellers keep it disabled to discourage buyers from shopping elsewhere

Hi Eric,
as you have pointed out, each EU country has to implement it in national law(s)
and/or regulations.
Can you please elaborate which countries already have implemented this EU rule
from 2011?
EU directives are not binding for any individual, they are only binding for the
28 member states. So your post is somehow theoretical and academic.
As for BrickLink enforcing these national laws, do you expect BrickLink to hire
lawyers in each of the 28 EU member states to examine the national laws and then
checking payment terms of 8794 EU BrickLink stores?
BrickLink acts only as a venue and is not involved in transactions.
Check #3 of the TOS:
http://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1919
Upon registration all sellers have already agreed on #13 of the TOS to comply
with all applicable laws and regulations.
Now, if you want to complain about specific store terms *you* would have to show
proof that the seller(s) in question violate the respective law(s) of the
seller's country for which you most likely would need an attorney.
Keep also in mind that payment transaction costs may not only include the PP
fees but also bookeeping costs. In case of an complaint it would be up to sellers
to show proof how their specific costs add up (if already regulated by local
laws).
For clarification:
I do not in any way want to defend sellers who charge more than the actual fees
but rather want to point out how difficult it is to judge about specific terms.
I have always tried to calculate most accurate fees, specified by buyer location
- which is not quite easy, as PP fees are calculated on the whole payment and
not only on order and shipping costs - but I'm fully aware about EU sellers
who charge a "flat" PP fee.
Btw. PP fees differ in different EU countries, for example German PP fees are
different than Dutch PP fees.

Fully agree on some of the things you pointed out, and no BL cannot put a lawyer
in each country. But it can examine the store terms of sellers in case of complaints,
the PP tables are visible for them as well,
|
You think it's reasonable for BrickLink to check each country's PP fee
table and compare it to the local law of the seller?
Come on. It's up to the seller the comply with laws and regulations, and
not up to BrickLink to check each country's law and each country's PP
fees.
| and yes, I am aware German PP fees
differ from others. But that's beside the point, point is that each seller
would need to calculate for him(her)self, based on the country he(she)is located
(if that country already published the Law) and where the buyer is from.
In some contries there are already that law, and in others they will come soon,
as that is what the EU directive of mid 2014 expects (allthough indeed it was
already written in 2011): That seller can't charge more, he/she can charge
exact, or less, simple.
|
You seem to imply that each country implements the EU directive in the same way.
In fact there are many different ways of implementation.
Germany for example has implemented it in a way that contract terms about inflated
payment fees are simply invalid, though the whole contract is not invalid.
It would be up to the BUYER to dispute the inflated fees either before buying
(which would them most likely let land on stoplists) or after buying (and any
known consequences, refund, stoplist, -FB etc.). Simply self-regulating as many
other things in BrickLink.
|
In regards to bookkeeping costs, yes, that could be part of a charge, but then
it cannot be called a 'PP' fee, or the seller can't either hind behind
it by saying: it's not just the PP fee, it also contains bookkeeping costs,
possible, but then the seller will need to call it differently
That BL requests from sellers to comply with local laws is clear, but when does
BL step in, in case of complaints? When does it remind sellers they need to?
|
Again, BrickLink is not involved in transactions.
| As Lukas pointed out, they (the admins) ignored his request, and so the problem
persists...
|
The whole cancellation process needs to be reviewed. Allowing buyers to unilaterally
cancel orders would could be misused, but actually there's no way for buyers
to dispute a rejected OCR for example for shipping fees to high or PP fees to
high (opening a can of worms...)

As was already mentioned, that is the table for personal payments. But the fees
for payment for goods are the same as for personal payment with credit cards.
But don't forget what is posted below the table: "Opmerking: internationale
betalingen in euro of Zweedse kroon tussen rekeningen die zijn geregistreerd
in de Europese Unie of de Europese Economische Ruimte worden, wat kosten betreft,
behandeld als binnenlandse betalingen bij het toepassen van kosten." This was
also discussed recently in another thread about Paypal fees. Payments in EUR
or SEK between countries in the EU or EEA are treated as domestic payments for
the calculation of fees.

So, are you saying if I buy from you, your PayPal fee, which you pass onto me
BEFORE I pay is variable depending on the source of money?
If I pay from a balance transfer, you pay less in fees, if I pay from a credit
card, you pay more ?
What about a bank account?
If you've charged me 3.4% but only pay .5% then a) do you notice and b) are
you actually refunding people ?
|
That is only for personal payments. The fees for payments for goods do not depend
on the source of the money. As mentioned in another post the poster had not noticed
that that was the table for personal payments.
