My Collection

Now that I have a daughter and a son, the LEGO parts have come out, and I've gotten hooked on them again!

We have the LEGO pieces from my childhood: mostly common white and red bricks, with a few wheels, little red doors, window frames, and clear pieces. Some little 1x1 and 1x2 plates, some longish 4x plates and two 10x20 gray base plates. No minifigs, no narrow bricks longer than 1x4, no instructions (that I remember) -- but somehow my brother and I felt like we had a wonderfully huge collection that could make anything!

I don't know what set or sets the pieces came from, but we must have received them sometime before 1971, because I distinctly recall using these LEGOs to make a model of the Lunar Rover first carried to the moon on the Apollo 15 mission. It was so cool to make my LEGO model and watch the real Lunar Rover on TV at the same time.

My parents bought me the Payloader (set 410) and the Fork Lift (set 450). A little older, I had added some Technic sets and the Space Shuttle (set 1682). More recently, we were able to bulk up our collection with my sister's garage-sale finds, my neighbor's no-longer-used bricks, and BrickLink orders.

Of the recent sets, my favorite theme is the Creator line, and favorite set has got to be the Creator Cool Convertible (set 4993)... WOW, that set is amazing! Of course, we had to make modifications to it.

Undoubtedly ours is a strangely varied and odd collection, but my children and I have a great time with it. We've come up with a reasonable sorting system using Plano Molding Company tackle/organizer boxes. Now, if only we had just a few more parts..........
