Good afternoon,

I'm sure this topic is quite exhaustive but I'm hoping for some clarification
on a potential change to a part within a set based on the instructions.

Set 5985 (Space Police Central) lists 11 Dark Bluish Gray 1x1 Modified Plate
with Open O Clip Thick (Vertical Grip) or variant 4085d. However, in putting
this set together I notice the instructions show what looks more like variant
4085b (the thin clip variant). Can you determine the part correctly via the instructions
or are those unreliable? Picture below...

Also, to complete this set do I need the 4085b variant to mark this as a complete
build? Can I use the 11 4085ds that I have? I do not want to misrepresent the
condition and completeness of what I am selling, but concerned that the variant
on the BL inventory is incorrect.

Intruscitons step's variants are considered unreliable for inventories; they
are made long before the set is boxed up with the actual bricks.

its best to use whatever is in the bricklink inventory, or if applicable, any
alternates listed at the bottom of the inventory.

Also:
— the old instructions were hand-drawn, mistakes happen,
— then they used (I hope 3D) models, but those didn’t get changed with the actual
moulds, so even if the moulds were already changed when the instructions were
made, the instructions could still use the old moulds.

Variants cannot be identified from instructions. Here is an image from an instruction
booklet from 2024. Showing a variant that fell out of use in 2007.
