A fair proportion of buyers don't leave feedback, or even change the status
to "Completed". As I am still a comparatively new seller I wonder how
long other sellers leave it before updating the status themselves, or is it best
to leave alone until the Order is purged after 6 months?

Best practice is to never update it as a seller to Complete.
Nowadays confirming completion and leaving feedback of an online purchase is
not common.
I file orders once shipped and never look at them again, else the buyer needs
something about it.

The only requirements for transactions here are payment by the buyer and shipment
by the seller. Order status updates and feedback are nice but not something
to worry too much about. If it really bothers you to have the order still on
your screen, you can file it.

To be perfectly honest you are not alone. What you wrote I have thought almost
on a daily basis.
Its easy for Steller and Jen to make the comments they did, they have both been
around a long time, very knowledgeable and have had thousands of transactions.
The problem with asking for feedback is you leave yourself open to negative/neutral
feedback, this of course harms your reputation when you have a low feedback rate
of 26, compared to someone who has a feedback of 4000.
Fortunately a Buyer can not just see your feedback they can see the frequency
of your sales and the number of transactions you made (46) in your instance.
That complaint against you is unfortunate particularly after the Buyer admits
in the same complaint you told him of the missing pieces and also refunded him.
I would be blocking him and seeing if the help desk could remove that complaint
harming your new reputation. That's just plain malicious and vindictive.
I hate it when people leave their orders in "received". But you cant
make somebody complete and leave positive feedback. If you could then the reputational
system would be seriously flawed.
My feedback is 195ish, I have done closer to 300 on bricklink.
Steller and Jen may sit around the 4000 feedback but I can assure you they would
have done closer to 9-10k transactions.
A local friend of mine who has a feedback of 6000ish has actually done 15,000
transactions.
Just click the box that says "file" and then click submit and move onto
making your next transaction above average-perfect. I say that because that is
exactly what I had to say to myself.

Right now, Stellar has 6,147 transactions as a seller and Jennnifer 5,280.
That’s written in their stores’ stats
The percentage of buyers leaving feedback is also something some buyers (older
ones?) look¹.
Some buyers don’t leave feedback when the transaction was “meh” or when they
don’t want a retaliatory neutral/negative.
(Neutrals are seen as ‘mild’ negatives by some members, so “no-feedback” is,
or was, used/seen as a ‘real’ neutral. But that’s less the case now as buyers
simply just don’t leave feedback.)

¹ If you do that, looking at the ratio feedback / transactions, remember the
number near our usernames includes feedback as a buyer too.

Ok I did not check those stats because that was my point. What is seen is not
the truth in regards "feedback".
I actually believe some mean to leave feedback but the process is lost on them.
click post. click positive. typ, press enter. post feedback. Surely this can
be made easier.
