Hi all,

Rant:

Why does TLG hate me (us)?

First, there’s no standard size for boxes.  Even those that look alike are always
one or two cm longer / smaller.
Every year, they change sizes.

Then, the boxes that are “flattenable” actually aren’t.  Besides the unyieldiness
of the carboard that prevents them to stay flat if you don’t put some weight
on them, there’s always a slight difference in the sizes of the sides that means
that they can’t be flat!

And now (well for a year or so), they are making two-parts boxes again.  Boxes
that can’t be flattened at all.  And still all in different sizes!

I’m already lacking display room for my sets and mocs… how and where can I store
the boxes now?
I don’t want to throw away my boxes 😭😭😭😭

The same goes for pizza boxes.....

- No standard sizing: Every pizzeria has its own supplier, and every supplier
thinks their 33.7 cm box is the industry standard. Spoiler: it’s not.

- Grease-proof coating: Makes them harder to flatten and less recyclable, especially
if they’re used.

- Structural quirks: Some have flaps, some have folds, some are origami puzzles.
And don’t get me started on the ones with built-in ventilation holes.

- Branding madness: Logos, slogans, and colors change constantly—even within
the same chain—so collectors (yes, they exist!) can’t stack them uniformly.

Storage Tips for Pizza Box Survivors

If you’re keeping them for reuse, art, or nostalgia (no judgment—some designs
are iconic), here’s how to tame the mess:

- Flatten with heat + weight: A warm room and a heavy board can help stubborn
folds relax.

- Stack by size, not brand: Group boxes by dimensions, even if it means mixing
Domino’s with local joints.

- Use vertical shelving: Like vinyl records—slide them in upright, sorted by
width.

- Scan and toss: If it’s the design you love, digitize it and let the grease-stained
cardboard go.

- Crafty reuse: Turn them into drawer liners, art canvases, or DIY LEGO sorting
trays (yes, really!).

You can’t flatten the new boxes!  That’s the main point of my rant 😭

You don’t store vinyl record vertically: with gravity, they become oval.

Of course, you don’t stack them horizontally either: the weight of the ones on
top would flatten the microgroove of the ones at the bottom.

If you don't buy any new sets, that problem goes away. Extreme problems need
extreme solutions.

This is something I've never understood about TLG. I would think that at
the qty's they are purchasing they would still see a significant savings.
It's the knock-on effect. Since they don't sell their sets as individual
items, they sell cases, those cases then have to be specially sized and made
to order for each run of sets. Since they don't use the same set dimensions
yearly, then they can't order massive qty's of case boxes to fit those
sets in.
