This is very discouraging. Insight into what happened would be appreciated, as
well as the steps that will be taken to ensure it does not happen again.
Please also note the following, in which Lego CS appears to imply that preorder
of a 'made to order' product does not in fact guarantee receiving it.
They aren't made to order, they are made to order up to a specific maximum.
It sounds like the system allowed too many orders so they cancelled the last
orders placed.

Seems they do produce more as per the last email newsletter:
Series 1 & 2 Surplus Stock
Sometimes we end up with a small number of extra BDP sets at the end of our production
process. That was the case for Series 1 and 2. We had our first surplus sale
in May, making a small number of these sets available for purchase. We were excited
to offer these sets to our members and are evaluating the possibility of additional
surplus sales in the future. Stay tuned!

"They aren't made to order, they are made to order up to a specific maximum.
"
This means they are in fact made to order.
I would give some credence to your idea, but my cancelled Riverside Scholars
were not one of the sets that sold out, therefore it is not possible that too
many orders were allowed for it.
"It sounds like the system allowed too many orders so they cancelled the

1. Systems should not allow too many orders.
2. Limited-run items are produced in quantities greater than their limit, so
as to cover for unforeseen damage, need for replacements, etc
3. Precedent already shows us that more are produced than ordered by consumers.
4. Buyers outside of Europe and NA have yet to receive the items at all, so buyers
in NA shouldn't be having their orders cancelled when further unshipped stock
exists.
I suggest that your empathy in this case should be with the buyers abruptly not
receiving limited-run items they received order confirmations for, and not the
corporation failing them.
As Lego is one of the largest box-movers in the world, it is puzzling to see
they keep making these mistakes over and over again. Maybe some AI-design went
the wrong way in the end?
4th run of BDP goes like the first into disappointing fans and friends all over
again.
You can't buy them off with 2600 insider points. This feels like entrapment.
Fix your stuff Lego!

and KYA who started the thread notes later that "after a bunch of back and
forth with LEGO they still can’t answer to what actually happened. They said
it was definitely on their end not an issue with payment or anything like
that. Looks like they just sold too many and didn’t have enough sets & cancelled
random peoples orders. " - https://www.facebook.com/groups/991442004640863/posts/2260060761112308/?comment_id=2260689964382721

Over on Reddit, and from personal experience, it seems as though at least five
people have had BDP orders cancelled without warning.
