A few sites feature the official part names - Brickowl, Brickset, Briquestore.fr
(and of course Lego)
I wonder where they get the data ? Could Brickset be getting it direct from TLG?
eg.
LEGO 4525236 PLATE 2X4X1 1/3 W. SIDE BOW - BLACK
on BL it resolves to:
Wedge 4 x 3 Open with Cutout and 4 Studs
Wedge : 47755
Part Color Code: 4525236 (Black)

Yes, LEGO has public-facing set and part data that is viewable on several different
sites.
eg.
LEGO 4525236 PLATE 2X4X1 1/3 W. SIDE BOW - BLACK
on BL it resolves to:
Wedge 4 x 3 Open with Cutout and 4 Studs
Wedge : 47755

Thank goodness for BrickLink for translating LEGO-speak into more descriptive
terms!
If you would like to see the official LEGO names and colors here on BrickLink,
you can view them here via the Inventory Comparison Tool:

Oh wow I was not aware of that page thanks.
Do TLG actually have an API / data download ? Brickset say they get it "direct
from Lego" - people can't be screen scraping surely?

I don't actually know all the specifics on the data or how it's acquired,
but I am sure it comes from LEGO. Hopefully, there are some experts around here
can answer your question. On Brickset, the data matches up more or less with
what's available on the LEGO parts replacement pages. The data on our Inventory
Comparison Tool is more complete. It's an excellent and well-hidden resource.
There's some info here on the Help pages although it's focused more on
how to use the pages:

Brickowl gets the set/inventory data from Brickset not from Lego directly.
