I believe the parts list for set #113 is incorrect. The list shows "light
gray plate 2x4" twice. I believe the correction is to change the 2nd listing
(quantity 24) to "light gray plate 2x6". Thoughts?

You must be talking about

Set No: 113 Name: Motorized Train Set
*
113-2 (Inv) Motorized Train Set
367 Parts, 1966
Sets: Train: 4.5V
(because there are no 2x4 plates in 113-1 ).

And that case, there’s a note at the end of the inventory (click “Inv” above
to get there):

Redesigned during production.

There are at least 2 different versions of instructions for this set. The differences
for the second version are indicated in this inventory in the Alternate Items
section with Match ID 99.

Quick overview of redesign: On the roofs of the carriages two 6 x 24 plates replace
large numbers of 2 x 2 and 2 x 4 plates.

The wires listed in this inventory have not been confirmed.”

Thanx for the info. I guess I haven't experienced a parts listing like this
in my years of using Bricklink. I typically print out a list and then gather
all the parts to do a build and then proceed to pick the parts from my inventory.
In the Lego 113 build, I now have to put wrong parts away and order a 2nd time
from Bricklink vendors which cost me extra shipping. With more research, I see
that Brickset.com has this set more user friendly. Don't get me wrong, I'm
a huge fan of this web site, but I don't think this particular parts list
helps anyone in the modern era.

The ‘Regular’ section (which is what you get when you “part out” an inventory
in a wanted list) contains all the parts and only the parts necessary to build
the first/original version of the set.
So, yes, if you have the newer version of the instructions, that doesn’t match.
But if you want the original set, it’s perfect.

Brickset only has one version, and it matches your instructions, great… but it
could have been the other way around.

In any case, indeed, how the different versions / redesigns are shown here isn’t
the best.  We’ve been promised changes long ago….

1I took a quick look at the inventory on brickset.com
https://brickset.com/sets/113-2/Motorized-Train-Set

1) The following parts from the regular section of this set are not even present
there:

Part No: crssprt02pb75 Name: Brick 1 x 6 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Blue in White 'BASEL' Pattern
*
crssprt02pb75 Brick 1 x 6 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Blue in White 'BASEL' Pattern
Parts: Brick, Decorated

Part No: crssprt02pb73 Name: Brick 1 x 6 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Blue in White 'GENOVA' Pattern
*
crssprt02pb73 Brick 1 x 6 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Blue in White 'GENOVA' Pattern
Parts: Brick, Decorated

Part No: crssprt02pb74 Name: Brick 1 x 6 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Blue in White 'HAMBURG' Pattern
*
crssprt02pb74 Brick 1 x 6 without Bottom Tubes with Cross Side Supports with Blue in White 'HAMBURG' Pattern
Parts: Brick, Decorated

Part No: 3009pb018 Name: Brick 1 x 6 with Red 'POST' Pattern
*
3009pb018 Brick 1 x 6 with Red 'POST' Pattern
Parts: Brick, Decorated

In some other productions, other variations of these printed parts were used.
You can see them in the alternate section. For example:

However, none of these printed parts are present on brickset.com .

2) The wire is missing on brickset.com

Part No: bb0393c85 Name: Electric, Wire 4.5V with four Metal 1-prong connectors, 85 Studs Long
*
bb0393c85 Electric, Wire 4.5V with four Metal 1-prong connectors, 85 Studs Long
Parts: Electric, Wire & Connector

3) In the new unopened set, the wheel came assembled with the trainrim and appeared
like this:

Part No: wheel1bc01 Name: Train Wheel with 2 x 2 Stud Center, Beveled Tread and Cam Axle for Motor with Light Gray Train Rim for 4.5V & 12V Locomotive Wheels (wheel1b / trainrim)
*
wheel1bc01 (Inv) Train Wheel with 2 x 2 Stud Center, Beveled Tread and Cam Axle for Motor with Light Gray Train Rim for 4.5V & 12V Locomotive Wheels (wheel1b / trainrim)
Parts: Wheel & Tire Assembly
But they are listed as separate on brickset

4) Some parts came in variations. For example in earlier productions:

Part No: 3065 Name: Brick 1 x 2 without Bottom Tube
*
3065 Brick 1 x 2 without Bottom Tube
Parts: Brick {Blue}

Part No: crssprt01 Name: Brick 1 x 8 without Bottom Tubes, with Cross Supports
*
crssprt01 Brick 1 x 8 without Bottom Tubes, with Cross Supports
Parts: Brick {Blue}

Part No: bb0007c01  Name: Electric, Motor 4.5V Type A 12 x 4 x 4 (Train)
*
bb0007c01 Electric, Motor 4.5V Type A 12 x 4 x 4 (Train)
Parts: Electric, Motor {Blue}

Part No: 3065 Name: Brick 1 x 2 without Bottom Tube
*
3065 Brick 1 x 2 without Bottom Tube
Parts: Brick {Trans-Clear}

Part No: 3176c01 Name: Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Hole (Train Coupler Closed) with Hook
*
3176c01 Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with Hole (Train Coupler Closed) with Hook
Parts: Plate, Modified {Red}

But they are not distinguished on brickset.

5) The inventory of bricklink 113 should be corrected in regard to 2x4 and 2x2
and 6x24 light gray plates. There are other changes needed to be done.

The parts list for this set was indeed not 100% correct as there should be no
duplicate entries in the regular items section. I have now made the necessary
changes, although it is still a rather complex inventory due to all of the alternate
parts.

If you have or want to build the original version, use the parts from the regular
items section with match ID 99 and ignore everything from the alternate items
section with match ID 99.
If you want to build the redesign, ignore all lines from the regular items section
with match ID 99 and instead use the lines from the alternate items section with
match ID 99.

Both versions of the instructions can be found here: http://www.peeron.com/scans/113-2/
