This arrived at my door 20 minutes ago. Claims its with Bricklink and wants
to verify my account, all I have to do is provide it with my banking info, social
insurance number and my mother maiden name.

This is all normal right?
I’d say give it a shot. What’s the worst that can happen

Yep, it would only be sus if they asked for your user password and address

Vietnam is still in the lead, though they're just making up random names.
I think Bricklink should take a look at other market sites like "Etsy"
and take a page from their books.
Both buyers and sellers are vetted before "any" transaction can be made
and before "any" communication can be made to another member or even
in a forum chat.
It's time to verify more closely and scrutinize all new players.
Because if they don't then we will be nothing more than paranoid sellers/buyers
that won't do transactions with people unless they have 50 or even a 100
transactions and so forth.
Considering we all pay fees, I believe that due diligence is owed to all of us.

This question might have already been asked, and forgive my ignorance if it has.
How would a site like Amazon that has 3rd party sellers account for this type
of scamming behaviour?

I've been scammed twice on Amazon. Both appeared to be genuine accounts.
Both promised items that never materialized, but refunded for missing items.
However, the refund was for much less than the total cost of the products. Amazon
didn't care.

The issue with Amazon is they are the biggest and baddest on the planet. an "untouchable"
that can do what it wants and when it wants. But a consumer can use amazon and
not use any 3rd party accounts.
Bricklink is not out of control by any means in regards infiltration. Likewise,
they are not so big like Amazon that they can't control what occurs. Bricklink
will never be massive compared to world consumer standards

The Vietnam member saturation, seems to involve getting URLs (in the member's
About Me) to populate to the search engines. Someone who deeply understands SEO
may be able to share more about how/why this is being done. It is almost certain
that these members have no interest in buying/selling on BL.

I belive it is "backlinks". In short the more links to your website that
are found on other websites, the more likely that google and such will trust
it. (its more complicated then that but this is the short of it)

Well now, one of these users (all of them come with an About Me page, and in
Vietnamese), translated to reveal they are advertising online betting. I have
reported this one. Checking a few others reveals slightly less onerous, but similar,
ad content. The About Me pages are all about advertising in Vietnamese, and not
for buying/selling little plastic bricks.

Hundreds ? Try 20,000+ so far in 2024. All of the ones with About Me pages are
advertising, and the majority of the advertising is for one form of betting
or another. About Me pages are not curated, like Collages are. It is a gap, that
someone discovered and it is being exploited.

Indeed. If I had to guess, those sites probably paid a seo company to boost their
site and this is probably one of many sites they use to do so
