The only difference is one has a printed pattern and the other has a molded pattern
but how do you tell which is which if all you have is one type? The pictures
do not help at all.

Actually, I may have both. The only difference is one has more of a matte red
top and the other has more of a shiny red top.

Well, if you scratch the dual-moulded one, you keep seeing the same colour, while
if you scratch the printed one, the colour changes.
What? It’s for identifying the part, surely it counts as “has been handled only
for sorting,” no?

I woulde'nt mind scratching them and counting it as “has been handled only
for sorting” but customers may not be so understanding. After all, they can be
real jerks in expecting Lego to arrive in good condition. I mean, come on,
what's wrong with a few deep scratches in new Lego? They still assemble
together okay.

The molded white fluff should be white on both the outside and inside
of the hat, but the printed one would only have the white print on the outside.

Except that the part is white with red print on top (there’s a version with Dark
Red print too).
So, unless the double-moulded one has red showing on the underside, you need
to look closely at the neatness of the border.

D'OH! I've been sorting printed tiles so long today that my brain isn't
working properly. But yes, as you said, perhaps the dual molded hat has red
on the inside... or maybe not... I'm going to let someone else figure it
out.

I just approved new comparison images (submitted by member HobbiesShop). Apart
from the tiny inside differences, the only way to be absolutely sure about the
variant is to check the mold number I'm afraid. We usually don't split
variants which are so similar that it is necessary to look for the numbers, but
we also decided some time ago to describe all dual-molded parts as "molded"
in the item name. So to do that properly, they must have a separate entry, even
if the visual difference is barely noticable.
