Im not an avid lego collector/builder so I am hoping that maybe someone out there
could help me out. My close friend has a cat that she adores who is somewhat
similar to the Tuxedo Cat Ideas set that was released earlier this year. Their
birthday is coming up and I've decided that I want to figure out what parts
of the cat I would need to switch out to make it more closely resemble their
cat.
I'm not sure if there is an 'ideal' way to go about executing this
so I was wondering if anyone one here had any advice they would be willing to
share, whether you've done something similar or just have some ideas to throw
out id love to hear it.
My plan i've loosely though up involved going through the instruction book
to see what parts are used and then determine which ones i would need to swap
out. Possibly using the bricklink studio to "map" it out. My idea with
using bricklink is that I could simply buy the pieces they would need to build
her cat with the set and give her a custom set of instructions to use to complete
the build.
I appreciate any and all help you guys can give me! ^-^

Hi,
I would use Studio for that. That means building the cat in Studio, then play
with the colours.
The big advantages are that you only change the visible parts and Studio can
tell you in what colours a part exists and their prices.
You can also try and replace parts (split or merge them) if the originals don't
exist in the colour you want.
And then you upload your model as a Wanted List.
Studio would be your best bet. In Studio you can load the set and build it. After
building it you can change the color of the pieces for spots that need to be
a different color. After that you can export the parts to create a want list
and buy the parts. You can also create instructions in Studio based on the new
parts so that they match instead of using the official instructions with different
colors.

There are a couple of ways to do that build and decide how you want to do that
build.
1. As you clearly point out given the closeness and similarities you should purchase
21349. But given you are building a close resemblance cat I don't see why
you need a new set. I however did check and no "used" sets are available
on Bricklink. I suggest you wait 2 weeks and purchase a new set with Lego.com
on "double points" day.
2. You need a photo of the/her cat. Whilst you order a 21349, you can select
and go to "pick a brick" and buy individual bricks from where the cat
you are imitating has a mark or a slightly different color. New bricks are quite
cheap and we generally get those in 5 days. Specialty pieces which get shipped
from Denmark can take up to a month.
3. By doing this you avoid uncertainty in buying "new bricks" from a
bricklink member, you avoid fees and postage and handling costs. It's a much
cheaper alternative and you are guaranteed new bricks and products.
4. As for customizing an instruction book. That my friend can become quite complicated
for a non lego person such as the birthday lady you are trying to satisfy. But
when I look at the cat itself whilst they are common bricks, they will be "shape
specific" to her. I would just write on the instruction book at the relevant
page "use brown brick instead of black brick" for example. Very quickly
during the build she will realize what she has to do.
5. If you already have the set (its appears you may). 3 choices, (1) go to your
local lego store and see if you can buy the bricks from the pick a brick stand,
it's about 20.00 a box. (2) again you can also use pick a brick on lego.com
(however they may charge you shipping unless you spend the quota). (3) work out
exactly what you want and use the search option in bricklink and purchase from
a store that has everything you want to reduce costs. I can assure you finding
bricks on bricklink is easier than chewing gum.
6. I hope after your efforts you and your close friend get very close!
