Despite this, looking through the catalog I am seeing
far more of these vintage sets seem to include the standard sword. I like to
make sure my sets are as correct as possible so I'm considering buying up
some standard swords to replace the shiny ABS plastic swords (Even though those
are much nicer)
Is it possible that both variants have been included in some of these sets and
that we simply don't know for sure? I imagine it's quite rare these days
that anyone ever breaks the seal on brand new sets to find out. Maybe I should
just keep the shiny ABS swords?

As for the ones available for sale, I wouldn't rely 100% on sellers to list
them correctly; I noticed mistakes with those swords in my own inventory in the
past, it's possible to confuse them if you don't pay close attention.
I would definitely ask a seller about that before ordering.
The same goes for the catalogue though, I've seen sets with the "wrong"
swords in them - all used/incomplete from flea market sources, so I have no definite
proof for an inventory change request, but the suspicion is there ...
Also, I have mostly ABS ones myself, can confirm your statistics.

This is definitely an issue that tends to crop up with parts that are very similar
like this. After going through my sets I have x16 ABS swords where there are
supposed to be standard swords according to the bricklink catalogue. I think
I will just keep them and maybe buy some standard ones here and there if it's
convenient. If anyone opens a sealed set and updates an inventory I'll change
the swords out. This reminds me of the pirate cannons though from what I know
about that the shooting cannons were EU only so they are interchangeable and
correct.

3847 is an undetermined entry as it does not mention the plastic type. I remember
reading somewhere that 3847a (the shiny ABS version) was phased out around 1994,
but never had any time to look into the issue myself.
