Question 1) Why is this a "Plate, Modified":

Part No: 73831  Name: Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with 1 x 1 Cutout
*
73831 Plate, Modified 2 x 3 with 1 x 1 Cutout
Parts: Plate, Modified {Red}

When this is a "Plate" (not modified):

Part No: 2420  Name: Plate 2 x 2 Corner
*
2420 Plate 2 x 2 Corner
Parts: Plate {Orange}

... while it could be a "Plate, Modified 2x2 Corner"?

Question 2)

If these ones below are ever produced, where will they be classified?

Plate, Modified or Plate Corner something or what?

In short, I don't see why 73831 is "less a Plate" than 2420 or 77844
or 2639.

Part No: 77844  Name: Plate 3 x 3 Corner
*
77844 Plate 3 x 3 Corner
Parts: Plate {Blue}

Part No: 2639  Name: Plate 4 x 4 Corner
*
2639 Plate 4 x 4 Corner
Parts: Plate {Dark Tan}

Or, why not considering:

All "Plate" should be rectangular (or square which is a rectangle) and
plain.

All others are "Plate, Modified", thus including our current "Corner".

Ohhhh

But I can read there:

That doesn’t mean, of course, that we will never move these parts. Just that
when we are being careful and moving things in logical stages, we need to recognize
that the inclusion of the “corner” elements is a completely different matter
than that of the 3 x 3 Cross Plate or the 2 x 3 Plate with Cutout, or other
parts like the 4 x 4 Plate with Center Cutout that could have been included with
the “basic” list had we gone another direction.

Anyway, it's a pain that 73831 is a "Modified", really.

You make good points, I thought.

To BL more broadly: Online search, especially cataloging, is about semantics
language-to-code If the commonly understood wording is not there, well....

Which goes to Sylvain's input

Oh wow - it may be an historical pain, but it's a pain.
I hope it'll change.

Sorry, didn't read this Russell's post.

  Have a similar question

Why is this a "Plate, Round":

Part No: 1745 Name: Plate, Round 1 x 2 Half with 1 Stud (Jumper)
*
1745 Plate, Round 1 x 2 Half with 1 Stud (Jumper)
Parts: Plate, Round {Red}

When this is a "Tile, Round" (not Plate):

Part No: 18674 Name: Tile, Round 2 x 2 with Open Stud
*
18674 Tile, Round 2 x 2 with Open Stud
Parts: Tile, Round {Orange}

This has bothered me too. I've always considered 18674 to be a round 2x2
jumper plate.

For many years, categorization of new parts was often an arbitrary or random
decision made by the member who submitted the part and/or the admin who approved
it.
And now, the site won't let us fix such things.
