So, this morning I needed to ship a 4-oz package to zone 7, customer specified
PM. Using my own packaging (6x4x2) PS quoted me $9.55. Using a small flat-rate
box, PS quoted me $8.10. D’oh! And I get use packaging provided by USPS. Sweeeet

As we get closer to the holidays, and package volume picks up, I expect the difference
to widen. In this case, the customer requested PM.

That has pretty much always been the case with First Class Parcels versus Priority
Mail. PM is really just a glorified name for anything first class above 13 (now
15) ounces.
Where the PO makes it gravy is when people use Priority rates when it is not
needed. Just like in the original example here -- CosmicRay paid almost
two dollars extra for a package that most likely will NOT travel any faster or
arrive any sooner.

USPS uses weight, distance, and package size to determine rates. If I were to
mail something to FL 4 ounces would cost 4.13 and 5 days via ground advantage
using PayPal shipstation. If I mail it to CA it is $3.90ish. A PM flat rate padded
envelope is $8.30 anywhere in US but is only 2-3 days so faster than GA if shipping
across the country. A small flat-rate box is $8.10 but does not hold much. So
PM can be better or worse depending on where the package is going and what
packaging you are using. That is why I like using the shipstation as I can see
the different charges but if a customer picks priority I ship that way as they
might need it faster.
