so a figure i ordered has disgusting marks and maybe mould on it that absolutely
wasn’t listed on the item. i ordered 3 figures from 1 seller with 5000 reviews.
1 fig was pristine, the other 2 however were riddled with filth and dirt and
hairs etc. i’ve contacted them and left a bad review but what else can i do as
this ain’t what i paid for. i’ve uploaded photos of one of the figures, the hairs
etc are in the legs of the other fig i don’t want to touch it if i’m honest

Sadly used lego on bricklink is often horrible quality. Many seller don’t understand
the difference between used and damaged. Thankfully most sellers will send a
refund but if they don’t you can file a PayPal claim for a refund

Where is the damage on these? Are the ones in the photo really 'horrible
quality'?

Lego has a tendency to show in better condition on camera then it is in person
so a combination of experience buying used along with the op saying “riddled
with filth and dirt and hairs” I am assuming it’s just difficult to see in the
photos

When I buy a used lot, I feel compelled to improve their catalog pics and I find
over and over that they look much worse on my camera than in person. It is often
how I find out that the arms are cracked.

And how you find that you need to consult an optometrist?

Presbyopia

At my age I do sometimes have to take a picture, or use readers or a magnifying
glass to see tiny features (e.g. element IDs) or flaws.

Same here, I usually find any dirt or damage looks worse on a close up photo
than in real life. Hence not seeing what the issue is with these legs.

True when focusing on taking amazing images but when casually taking an image
of a part with poor lighting and similar damage dosnt show up easily (don’t get
me wrong it’s still noticeable but the full extent won’t show up often)

I agree with this, nubs.
I have "bulk dump" piles for about every theme where rough shape figures
or pieces end up to get dumped as "DAMAGED" to $0.99 free shipping auctions
where I hope they live on as filler for an army builder.

Often, when taking pics of the group, they actually look pretty good since a
lot of the damage doesn't show well on the camera like nicks, scuffs, and
cracks.

However, when taking individual pics for brickognize, sometimes the image looks
worse than the actual piece does by eye.

So I guess, it depends on lighting, picture type, how good the macro gear is
etc.

No, it isn't.

Many seller don’t understand the difference between used and damaged.

A few don't, the overwhelming majority do.
There are buyers here who seem to think that used means essentially new but less
expensive.

The minifig legs in those photos look ok, just have a little bit of dirt that
can be wiped off.

If only I could get the luck it seems everyone else has with the orders I place
maybe the next few that show up I’ll have to write to show what was ordered
and the exact condition I got it in

the order total was about that but the damaged parts (if including all the complete
figures pictured) is about $24ish CAD since the cape and hips were in decent
condition and made up most of the value it isn't as high $ wise
(parts total $58.82 and shipping $2.49 CAD)

That's horrendous.

I sell mostly used parts and I've gotten some nice feedback about how "nice"
my used parts are... they are just "normal" used parts to me.

It's made me realize the kind of crap that is being sold out there.

I do recall getting more worn than I'd sell parts back when I used to order
alot, but typically it was only when I went to cheap sellers. I rarely buy minifigures
though.

I've since found about 10 sellers I just use over and over now.

Oh!
I regret to say that your store is large and your feedback is one of the best!

Presumably their feedback will be slightly worse after you leave yours.

I think a lot of this is down to just one condition of used. Some people take
used to mean that a used part should be used once by an adult and is perfect,
whereas others take it to mean used as in owned by a kid, spent years being played
with and the odd minor nick or scratch is expected playwear. The reality of course
is a mixture.

I had hoped you were exaggerating a smidge last week, but clearly not.

I think I ordered from the same store "N..." in 2019. My total value
of parts in my order was about $6. I requested photos or just required about
the condition of 4 printed parts and the seller sent me their photos. I was 100%
satisfied as far as I remember but there were no minifig's part in my order.

I re-read the condition guidelines.

Used Parts - Parts which have been previously used and are still in good,
usable condition. If the parts show excessive wear, discoloration, excessive
scratches, other marks, etc., this should be noted in the item description.

I think all the parts you received are in at least usable condition. They are
clearly not perfect, but then they are used parts sold at lower prices than new
ones. Whether they are good or not and whether the wear, scratches, etc are excessive
is open to interpretation. When I buy used parts, I assume that they will have
some average wear and I would certainly not expect them to be totally scratch
free. When I browse used parts, it seems to me that if a used part or minifigure
looks in VG or excellent condition, then sellers will say that. Similarly if
something is damaged more than average, they will also say it. And that leaves
the middle chunk where there is some light (and what I would call expected) playwear.

To me, the foot on the tan legs is not acceptable as it was not mentioned and
that is damage rather than playwear. Whereas the scratches on the pink torso
are expected (to me) on a play-used part that has been in a big tub as part of
a kids LEGO collection. I would not be happy if the seller had marked it as excellent
condition. But without a description, I would expect such playwear and the torso
can still be used. If I wanted an (almost) perfect one then I would have looked
at new or used ones with a description saying that they were in excellent condition.

I guess this is where sellers have taken condition guidelines into their own
hands. Even though better than average condition is not meant to be highlighted
under the official guidelines, many sellers do highlight this. I assume that
parts without that description will be the mid-range condition. If two sellers
have the same used item at the same price, and one describes it as excellent
and the other has no comment, I'd go for the one with the description based
on the assumption that no description means it will have some play-wear and is
not in excellent condition (as otherwise the seller would say so).

If those scratches on the pink torso don’t qualify as “Excessive scratches” I
don’t know what does. Beside arguably the 1 wu torso and maybe the nexo bot none
of what is in the pics was in usable condition and all showed excessive wear.
Bite marks, heavy print wear, etc. used can show wear yes to a point but that
dosnt mean it’s badly damaged which many think it does.

So I messaged the seller about it and they offered to resent some of the parts
and refund the rest. Because sellers do resolve it I’m usually hesitant to leave
negative feedback as the seller resolved it properly so it is now resolved and
i am “happy” with the order

No, it isn't.

Repeatedly when buying used between 30-50% of parts in orders have bite marks,
cracks, yellowing, heavy damage and similar. I’ve placed 100+ orders for used
parts and have only ever had about 5 without quality issues the rest have countless
damaged parts

Many seller don’t understand the difference between used and damaged.

A few don't, the overwhelming majority do.
There are buyers here who seem to think that used means essentially new but less
expensive.

I wish that were true but sadly experience has not confirmed that. Maybe I’m
just unlucky. Just the other day I received this figure listed as “perfect condition”
and this is what I got

Why not leave feedback to warn others then?

Since then it often leads to a lengthy conversation which is fine for 1 off things
but when your dealing with 10 orders a week isn’t feasible time wise and will
likely lead to getting blocked at more stores plus if you send a message to them
most will refund you so if they offer to refund the damaged parts it feels weird
to still leave negative

I am sorry, this does not make sense to me. It is feasible, time wise, for you
to chase after a refund but not to leave appropriate feedback? The conversations
do not have to be lengthy. Why worry about getting blocked from a store that
sells bad used parts? Yes, even after a refund you could leave a neutral "Used
parts in bad condition, had to get refund" or some such verbiage.

If you left feedback, eventually, these types of sellers might be less of a problem,
plus it serves as a warning for other users, making Bricklink stronger in the
long run.

The thing is for about a year I never even chased refunds. I simply left generic
feedback the marked them as favourite or least favourite with a note about quality
I left negative once but the person messaged me and sorted it out and I removed
it. I don’t really ever leave negative (with the 1 exception a while back) and
since I know most are willing to resolve it I feel bad leaving it even if half
the ordered had to be thrown out. Ya I know this dosnt make sense to most others
but it’s just something I do. Sorry

No need to be sorry, unless it is Canadian law or something.

This is the great thing about being a BL seller, you can run your store how you
see fit. You do you Jason!

+1 , please warn others when disappointed, praise when deserved, and also choose
used sellers who have lots of feedback that says “excellent quality” or indicators
of good condition parts.

We’ve exchanged a few orders over time, Nubs - so as a fellow used part seller
I sure hope I’m one of those 5 shops without quality issues! 🙂
It’s a worry/possibility that such a prolific forum poster (not to mention YouTube
star) as yourself might taint the overall reputation of used part shops on Bricklink
with such statements, since others trust and value your opinion.

To be clearer:
Wondering means you care, caring makes you a good seller.  So you shouldn’t need
to wonder but caring make you both a good seller and wondering.

It’s Latin for “Thus passes the glory of the world.”

It was used to remind a newly crowned person (esp. the Pope) that nothing lasts,
that they’ll die and be replaced and forgotten too.

IOW, kindof “enjoy your 15min”

But I like to take it in this other sense: that’s how the world’s glory ends

No, it isn't.

Repeatedly when buying used between 30-50% of parts in orders have bite marks,
cracks, yellowing, heavy damage and similar. I’ve placed 100+ orders for used
parts and have only ever had about 5 without quality issues the rest have countless
damaged parts

Why don't you leave feedback to warn others if as much as 50% of an order
has bite marks, cracks, yellowing and heavy damage or an order has countless
damaged parts?

If you receive parts like the ones in the first picture, would you class that
as heavy damage? To me, it is just tiny amounts of dirt that was uncovered when
bending the hips right back. So tiny, they were ringed to make it clear what
the buyer was complaining about. A quick wipe and it is most likely gone. If
that is such heavy damage that it needs to be refunded then I am surprised any
used LEGO can is ever sold here.

Like mentioned with the comment he said about the condition and it being poor
lighting and similar I am assuming that it’s just something that isn’t picking
up well on camera but no with what’s visuals in that photos I didn’t notice anything
major but am assuming it’s just not picked up well by the camera but if not then
I agree in this case it likely would be wiped off

Glad to see the two orders in our shop were part of those "5 without quality
issues".

so a figure i ordered has disgusting marks and maybe mould on it that absolutely
wasn’t listed on the item. i ordered 3 figures from 1 seller with 5000 reviews.

Maybe give them a wipe with a wet cloth. For used parts they don't look too
bad. They don't look chewed or damaged, just a tiny bit of dirt caught in
the hips that you have exposed by bending them right back.

Have you first contacted the seller to remedy the issue? Give them a chance to
make it right. Replacement, refund, etc. if they mess that up, then you can escalate
to refund and feedback.

Any store can miss a quality issue and send out a dud. Give them the opportunity
to make it right first.

I doubt there is anything the seller can do in this case if the buyer thinks
that the part they phitographed is disgusting and riddled with filth and dirt.
The buyer is probably best off sticking with new parts only if they find this
part to be so repulsive.

You were not satisfied with one part and decided to directly leave a feedback
and basically punch into the seller's face, i.e. destroy their reputations
without giving them a chance to resolve the issue?!
I think many sellers have already stop-listed you but you can check that for
yourself:

https://www.bricklink.com/myActivity.asp?utm_content=subnav

Why?
Because if a seller make a honest mistake with your order, you would directly
ruin his/her reputation so they would prefer to avoid any trouble before it happens.

Just my 2 cents.

Are you being serious???
An experienced seller (+5000 fb) obviously has no care for product quality and
has the audacity to send such filthy parts and you think it's due to "human
error"?
It's just rude is what it is and he deserves the negative feedback IMO.

Btw, shame on you for comparing this to punching someone in the face, just for
dramatic effect.

Potential buyers should check out the stores feedback and then decide on what
is the best way to proceed, just as we always say here on BL.

Best way of knowing how a shop operates and what issues they have, applies to
all sellers including me.

The main thing for me is a good record and how a seller deals with a problem,
missing item/s, missed damage etc, if it’s resolved amicably then like some others
I post positive feedback.
