Afternoon all, I'm just asking for a little advice. I'm a UK based seller
and this is my first year on BrickLink. I have noticed a sharp drop in orders
over the past month and wondered if it is just a run of bad luck, or if sales
do drop over the summer?

Any comments gratefully received!

As true as that reel is, this has been a particularly strange summer/early fall
for a lot of sellers. The sales numbers are definitely down across the board
and for me personally have absolutely tanked this month. I normally have 8/day.
I've had 4 since Sept 1. I'm a moderate sized store with over 1.5 million
parts. I would love to hear from Admin about what is happening site wide, but
I doubt we will.

There were more orders this year August than any other year:

Where did you get the info for your graphic from? I tried looking up the # of
sales, but they seem to have removed that from the calendar.

Maybe just by looking at order # since those are consecutive

I've always used those myself; I was simply asking if he had a different
data source.

The numbers for August may be up, but for the first of September they are down
from last year. Since I've seen so very few orders this month I ran the numbers
this morning and came up with 79019 for 11 days of Sept.(Sept 11 order id # -
Aug 31 order id #, 2023) That's 7183/day. When I do the exact same thing
for my orders from 2022 for the same period of time I get 92584 orders or 8416/day.

I think Erwin mentioned he gets it from the highest order number. (He has a service
that you can buy that syncs your inventory and manages your orders.)

Had to look it up, I was mostly correct... https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1382233

Thanks for that. I do remember that forum post, but think I quit reading it before
he posted on the thread.

Just my two cents....
It feels like that overall demand of new parts dropped rapidly. Also the average
prices dropping continuously for new parts.
Maybe its just about to much Lego on the market. Or its about Lego's growing
"pick a brick" business. Whats the reason behind Lego bought BL some
years ago? They wanna make money, thats all. First years there were studying
the market, now all top100 selling parts and hundreds more you can get via "pick
a brick". Most of them even cheaper then on BL.

This was my exact concern when I first heard TLG was buying BL.

My 2 cents...

Global inflation has been and continues to be an issue. People tend to lower
their discretionary spending and focus on needs rather than wants. I think this
is part of the driver of prices for new parts declining, demand is weak.

I would venture a guess it has been a while since most here have gotten a substantial
order from Venezuela [398% inflation], Lebanon [252%], Syria [139%], or Argentina
[113%]? (Source: https://tradingeconomics.com/country-list/inflation-rate-)

I agree that TLG is utilizing Bricklink and its data to hone their market, but
they still can not do the fulfillment that 17,217 stores with over 1.3 billion
parts can. (Source:https://www.bricklink.com/browse.asp) I do predict we will
see some consolidation in the marketplace as niches develop and large stores
seek growth.

What I am doing for MacsBricks is temporarily slowing expansion, avoiding long
term debt, and keeping some cash in reserve for any buying opportunities that
may arise.

And it may surprise some here, I do not find it useful to worry about what TLG
does or doesn't do. While there is a risk of being on BL exclusively, I truly
do not believe TLG will shut Bricklink down any time soon. I am unsure of the
effect PAB will have on the Marketplace, I hope it will bring more AFOLs here
but I am taking a wait and see approach.

I think I've giving more than 2 cents, so I will shut up.

Yes, 2023 is really tough, prices of everything basic have exploded (here
at least).

France, count on a 20/50% increase, in practice.
Those aren't the official numbers (which I've no idea on what they calculate
it; probably on something no one uses)

Then one wonder why people buy less toys (as fabulous as they are)?

I don't 100% agree.
I do predict consolidation but for the larger stores.
Which we (1001) aren't; I'm talking about those Featured, with 1 or 10
M$/€ Inventory.

Much more, 10 years ago the market was wide: worldwide.

But right now it's shrinking because of new ways to apply taxes and increased
Shipping Prices (ex: UK, AU, EU, Sales Taxes...) which contract more and more
people on their own Country or Region.

This is less and less a global market, every year
That saddens me.

I might be an exception, but I've received quite a few orders in August before
I raised my prices. Granted I have been pricing at quantity average rather than
average because I have a full-time tech job; I just wanted to turn my hobby into
a side-hustle.

I tend to see average prices sky-high compared to the quantity average and I
figure that just because you can list something for X amount, doesn't mean
people will pay it. In my opinion, if BL isn't your sole or main source of
income, quantity average is a better bet because it's the average of what
people have paid and therefore a better picture of what people are willing to
pay.

Pricing closer to that in the summer months seems to make more sense than pricing
at or even above average. Not sure about winter though... I opened mine halfway
through August.
