Hi,

I'm thinking about selling on BL. The single most thing that makes me hesitate
is not the time required but how you go about setting-up your storage system
and how much space this will require. It seems overwhelming to me to translate
boxes of loose bricks in to 100's of small containers, all itemised, categorised
and easily found when needed.

Would anyone have any suggestions/links to what items they think are the best
storage systems to buy if you were setting up rom scratch (within reason on the
money side)

Or how many drawers/containers you should realistically have to operate a good
system picking.

Thank you for your thoughts and advice.

It really depends how much stock you plan to hold, how much space you have and
how much time you want to devote to it. And how much you want to invest in storage
vs stock.

If you are a small seller, a few old boxes with labelled freezer bags inside
that each contain 20 parts (or whatever) is fine. It is not as efficient as a
1000 drawer system, but if you get one order per day then efficiency is not really
that important. It doesn't matter if it takes you 20 minutes to pick an order
that would take a busy store 5 minutes, if you get just one order a day. It won't
really scale for future if you decide to expand, but that can be decided later.
Add remarks by box number then bag number so it is easy to sort orders by those.
Whereas if you are picking large numbers of orders then efficiency is more important.
Once you work out what sells well for you, then tailor your storage to suit that
type of order and maybe purchase better storage once you are making money.

Yes, I was thinking more in at the deep end. Having spent 10+ years making sets
'100% complete' from brought bundles I seem to have taken over half the
house with boxes of loose or part sets and figures.

My wife, rightly so, wants her house back and for the lego to only be in one
room, coupled with recently being made redundant, I am thinking this could be
the time for a change of jobs. So was thinking along the lines of a large store
professional racking/storage solution and what would people advise if they started
again from scratch and had a room to use as the 'office'

I you already have lots of stock, I'd start slowly listing complete sets,
minifigs and the more valuable parts from incomplete sets you know you won't
complete. They are relatively quick and easy to deal with and give decent order
values and you can soon learn if you are going to make the sort of money you
want to and if you enjoy selling.

When scaling up my store, I purchased a load of Raaco 1260-00 drawers with dividers
and Really Useful scrapbook drawers with dividers. I also have some Really Useful
drawers and boxes for larger pieces. It's not cheap, but if you plan to scale
then picking and sorting orders needs to be fast.

The Raaco drawers are good for Lego - they are the perfect size for parts up
to six studs wide and 16 studs long. I got them from Rapid Online and negotiated
a reduced price for them as I was buying a large quantity.

I got a local carpenter to put up the drawers and install cheap kitchen worktop
to work on.

It's a big outlay, though!

Thank you for your thoughts and advice.

I'd also advise you to apply to open a store as soon as possible as it can
take a while. Even if you are not ready, you can leave it closed while you decide
what to sell when and what storage options you go for.

Everyone does it differently. It has part to do with the volumes of similar parts,
and somewhat to do with how your brain is wired and how you organize things.

My current organization is divided between wall drawers and various tubs (possibly
20-30 now). The wall units are small drawers, arranged on a grid system, with
each drawer having a grid coordinate. Into each drawer I store (as space allows)
more than one lot, but I never mix the same color or the same part in a drawer.
That makes it less likely to pull the wrong one. As a drawer fills, it’s contents
(the specific part causing the overflow) is migrated out to a tub.

I have two kinds of tubs, both conventional LEGO tubs and large Akro Mills tubs.
Both are handled on the same system. Each unique item stored is in a zip lock
bag. Also within the zip-lock is a small piece of paper, upon which is written
the BL part catalog ID, and optionally the color (for browns/grays) to make sure
I pull the currect one. Each tub/bin has a designator number.

In the lot’s remarks, I put the drawer grid-reference or the bin/tub designator.
Then, when an order occurs, I get not only the list of what was ordered, but
a list of where each item is located.

I do not organize by color or by part type, but use the storage as needed to
best hold the inventory.

To give you an idea of space, here is my shop with about 140,000 parts. The storage
method (bagged, in bins) is less efficient than drawers but works well for me.
This is half New, half Used and sorted by Category.

I have only purchased the shelves and bins. Most everything I use for sorting
and picking are cardboard trays from the grocery store, repurposed boxes, and
reused take-out lids and cups.

Don't forget when designing your storage/picking system that you need to
keep your bricks from getting scratched and keep everything from getting dusty.

Good luck,
~Jen

Yogurt is your friend. Small pots for sorting smaller parts and/or small quantities,
larger 2-lb containers for larger parts or quantities. The other day I breezed
thru a few sets that had 186 unique parts each.

Awesome! For me, it's soy sauce and miso soup.

A combination of drawers and the boxes is what I’d recommend. Drawer unit arent
to pricy depending where you live (I was able to get 64 drawer units for about
$35 CAD a piece and usually everything is more expensive in Canada) and when
on sale can be affordable considering how useful they are. And some large plastic
shoe boxes for larger items and for items that you larger qty of. When listing
just start adding them to drawer 1 and when drawer 1 is full move on to drawer
2 etc. then make sure you always add the remarks on bricklink and then when you
pull orders you can get them pretty quickly and drawers (even small ones) can
hold quite a bit of lego
