We are selling used Lego and I make a strong effort to keep worn and severely
beat up pieces out of inventory. Some of the moderate play wear I’ve included
in our inventory but with descriptions. But there is some Lego I have that must
have gone to a prison or were driven over by big wheels in a driveway, they are
straight up abused! But I don’t have the heart to throw them out.

Has anyone known people that buy really beat up Lego? If there was a rare part
that was beat up, do people still buy them?

You could sell them as 'fillerbricks' it seems there is some market for

I'm very cautious with poor condition bricks - with the automated wanted
list purchasing.

I've asked several people to confirm they actually wanted the "more yellow
than typical" used light gray bricks - all of them said they did not realize
they were not standard quality. The automated system can't differentiate.

I had a pretty big warning... here's the last lot.

https://store.bricklink.com/Andy_Bell?p=Andy_Bell&itemID=303940425#/shop

I have removed most of them, just to avoid any issues. And will probably remove
this one soon.

My brother works along the Mexican border and knows several pastors in poor neighborhoods
in Mexico. I send the scratch and dents to him to gift to kids who would never
have Lego otherwise.

I recommend NOT giving them to thrift stores - where I have seen lots for sale
that should be in the trash.

I was wondering if this was a thing, I assume you'd do custom lots to sell
em.

in general people dont mind damaged parts as long as they are clearly described
but for most normal used damaged parts i just throw them out if its more then
minor damage. minifigure parts sell decently well damaged on ebay when listed
as large lots of damaged figure parts but normal bricks don't sell to well
(some as filler do but most don't)

I'm torn on this too. I have a bunch of white that are sun-damaged. I thought
for sure I was going to throw them away until I saw a post on Instagram. A designer
had used a mix of white and yellowed white to make a tombstone and it turned
out really good. The mix of colors gave him texture and realism just like stone
would look. He did the same with light grays and light bluish grays.

Also on Instagram I saw a designer use broken reddish brown pieces to make a
medieval structure. Those broken pieces made the building look older and shabby.
It was really effective.

Lastly, I read on here that someone sold a sub-par lot to a parent on Marketplace.
They were going to give them to their kid who didn't care about condition.
This would be a good alternative for little kids who may not use care in keeping
track of Lego for a set.

I'm thinking of offering my cast-offs as a custom lot. Offer them up for
really cheap if someone wants to pay the shipping.

With the provision that one shouldn’t give broken parts to kids.  You know, sharp
things and kids…

Then, maybe a kid may resent being given old discoloured stuff when its parents
get to keep the shiny ones to swoosh around

The battered woman shelter here. The woman usually come with children. They
are very protected and toy donations help keep them busy.

Any that are just broken (seems like they're always the reddish brown), we
throw away. Decent ones that are just yellowed or have a little too much wear,
we sell at a local antique store -- people can see exactly what they're
getting and don't seem to mind, they always sell (same thing we do with the
off-brand bricks that come in batches we buy).
Any others left after that often go up to a shared family cottage where kids
can have them to play when the weather's lousy, or play with them outside
and it doesn't matter if some are lost.
I saw a local library was collecting "any kind of building bricks" for
kids to do summer art projects here.

Lego will send you a shipping label and cover the cost for you to return them.
I collect mine thru the year and annually return them to Lego

I do this too - anything broken or bitten I just toss but if it’s too worn/damaged
to sell in my shop and the kids have enough to build here at home, I mail it
to LEGO Replay. They distribute to charities and make sure that kids in need
will get them.
I had a bad experience giving my cast-off LEGO away only to find it offered for
sale a few days later, described as in great condition. I feel better knowing
kids out there will give all of my second-rate bricks some love!

Don't worry, after a few years of running a store, you'll be much less
likely to get attached to damaged pieces. In fact, even the new pieces that
fall on the floor are likely to find a permanent home there.

Not every piece of Lego needs to be sold on Bricklink. It is ok to throw broken
toys in the garbage, and that includes Lego.

I would not give broken Lego pieces to anyone to play with. On the other hand,
parts that are merely well-worn may still be just as enjoyable for kids to build
with.

Abused, broken and damaged Lego has outlived its purpose. Throw it out and don't
feel bad about it.

There are a lot of non-profits that you can donate them to. I often give bags
to Giving Brick that rebuilds sets and puts together bags for classrooms and
kids in need. You can Google Lego donations and find several that accept them.
If they're broken of course throw them out but the rest feel free to donate
to a good cause.

I use beat up and broken pieces as Lego garbage in our Lego city. In trash cans,
dump bins, and garbage haulers.

I always thought they’d be good for a scrap yard scene or battle zones.

Has anyone known people that buy really beat up Lego? If there was a rare part
that was beat up, do people still buy them?

I use beat up and broken pieces as Lego garbage in our Lego city. In trash cans,
dump bins, and garbage haulers.

Donate them to charities or send them to a recycling facility that accepts the
type of plastic in them.

Even if it's broken, they should be able to recycle it into new plastic.
Sometimes plastics get turned into park benches and similar molded items.

If you can prevent it from going to landfill, that would be worthwhile. Landfill
takes a very long time to break down plastic.

I personally keep anything I wouldn't sell to someone else. I've always
thought they'd come in handy for MOC designs. Hope this helps!

Cheers ...

We sell "filler bricks". The problem, as another mentioned, is that the
auto buy may select them over our excellent quality as they are cheaper and the
buyer may not realize it. We have had that happen a few times. We are about to
try another method which we think will work better, and that is listing the filler
bricks all under the "not applicable" color. So all colors of our filler
1x2 bricks, for example, will be listed as "not applicable" and buyers
will just get random color(s) when then purchase them. Since filler bricks are
not usually seen, I don't think buyers will be looking for specific colors
anyway. We hope this will work better.

The way the N/A colour in Wanted Lists is handled by Auto-select / Easybuy is
already a mystery to me (the chosen lot/colour is not the cheapest in the store),
I don’t know how they cope with lots for sales in N/A.

I’d do tests to be sure it works.

Is the BrickLink Administrative team aware of this issue? Filler bricks should
become a category that Auto-select won't touch unless explicitly set up to
by the buyer.

I read descriptions of what I'm buying, and am therefore quite aware of what
filler bricks are. I wonder if something should be done to ensure the buyer is
aware of when Auto-buy has added filler bricks to their cart, instead letting
of Auto-buy just add it in invisibly?

Cheers ...

To be clear: the N/A colour in Wanted Lists means (and, AFAIK, has always meant)
“any colour.”

That means that when you search for stores to fulfill your WLs or if your search
your WLs inside a store, the lots that are marked as “N/A” in your WLs will give
as results all the lots of the same item in any colour.

Auto-select and EasyBuy work the same way as other searches in this matter.

It’s not about “filler bricks” as in “used and even damaged bricks,” it’s about
“filler bricks” as in “I don’t care the exact colour as they will be hidden anyway
bricks.”

So buyers are getting exactly what they asked for…
… except that the lots chosen for N/A items are a bit weird.

And if the question was specifically: Does the site knows about the weird choice
the auto-tools make to fulfill N/A items?  Then the answer is: It should, as
I talked about it a few times and particularly in a feedback session I had a
few weeks ago.

If you don't mind gluing them to other lego parts, they make good coat hooks.

Someone posted in forums a while back asking to buy dirty beaten up bricks.
I think he wanted them to create an aged look for buildings.
